bunomatic Posted March 22, 2012 Report Posted March 22, 2012 I typically only give my game summaries when I attend a game in person. I was there so here goes! Sweeping Drew Stafford's legs out from under him on a breakaway as he's shooting is not worthy of a penalty shot? Ummm ok well at least it's a penalty, right? Ughhhh wow Vanek, Hodgson, Tropp line - Somehow Vanek was the worst looking player on a line comprised of and AHLer and a rookie prospect? Strange Sekera looks like he may still be recovering from pneumonia ... had some bad giveaways and wasn't playing as physically as I was seeing him play this season Montreal made the Sabres their ###### all night in the physical game and this was really upsetting P.K. Subban upended multiple Sabres in multiple situations with no retribution from anybody, that was infuriating. I don't need to see the guy knocked out in a fight but somebody please hit the guy when he's skating in circles with the puck for 10 seconds in your own end A wraparound goal against Carey Price?! LoL things are not right in Montreal Tyler Myers is back in cuddly teddy bear mode What was Regher acquired for again? Most of hits these days are misses. Turnbull did absolutely nothing to lead me to believe he wants to play in the NHL. Seemed like an opportunity of a lifetime with absolutely no show of Buffalo Sabres physicality ... but nope The crowd was about average. I cheered quite a bit and quite loudly in the 117 section but I was the only one I saw in that area making any noise The crowd chanted "U - S - A" in the third which was really stupid. Especially considering the only three goals scored in the game were by Canadians (and one by a Montreal native). I don't get this chant? It doesn't motivate our Germans/Swedish/Finish/Austrian/Canadian players I don't think. Is this one more for the beer guzzlers?! All-in-all I'll take the two points. I would much appreciate seeing a Sabres team that stood up for itself in the hits department a bit though. I always believed the U.S.A. chant was for Miller and the fact that he was the lead goalie on the U.S. olympic team. I don't see a problem with it. The game is in Buffalo , N.Y. and the players work for the Buffalo franchise. They also play the anthems of the teams that represent either the U.S. or Canada before the game ( take it or leave it, I could care less about the opening anthems. Its nostalgia ). At least the crowd is making noise.

I thought it obvious that the chant is directed at all the Canadiens fans that invade FNC every time we play them. I wouldn't think that the players really care what is being chanted as long as a lot of noise is being made.

TrueBlueGED Posted March 22, 2012 Report Posted March 22, 2012 Crowd has been dead for 2 years now and the only time they turn it up is for the Toronto (and usually Montreal) games. It is not the product on the ice like the excuse has been for so long. It is not the nervous energy either. It is what it is and I don't think it will change until at LEAST an advance to the 2nd round is made..... Said it before, say it again: it's too much of a family atmosphere. Even a lot of the adults there without children seem to treat it as more of a night out than going to a sporting event. I think the tiered ticket pricing has something to do with it too, and it's not simply that rich people go to gold games and poor drunks go to value games. Even if the people going to the value games were more inclined to be loud, they're also usually against garbage competition that doesn't exactly invite crowd involvement. For Bills games you can get a ticket for $50, tailgate for 4 hours before it starts, and be loud and obnoxious before even getting into the stadium. For most Sabres games people can barely get off of work and eat dinner before going, let alone spend 4 hours pregaming it somewhere.

At Canes games, there are a lot of children and people who have no clue about hockey that are just there for something to do, and they have no problem being one of the loudest arenas in the league.
Zamboni Driver Posted March 22, 2012 Report Posted March 22, 2012 Cody Hodgson is settling in just like I though he might. Good for the kid and I hope he continues to produce for us. We must keep winning, nothing else matters. Lets go Buffalo! Glad to see that he got it going. Geez, I was starting to wonder if we forgot to send you the batteries when we shipped him off.... :P

That's exactly how I feel when I go to watch my local team these days. Went bankrupt twice in two years, and have sucked ever since. I used to follow this team, heart and soul, voice completely wrecked after a game, when they were competitive - Now I bring my five-year old and shrug "Oh well, happens all the time" when the refs miss a blatant infraction. Lack of expectation leads to lack of enthusiasm, eventually.
apuszczalowski Posted March 22, 2012 Report Posted March 22, 2012 The USA Chants are for Miller, because he was the MVP of the Olympic hockey tournament playing for team USA. The chants came out last night because he was about to get a shutout and was playing like he was back in that tournament. I thought this was common knowledge???? It also doesn't hurt that your opponent is a Canadian (well, French Quebec) team named "The CANADIANS".
Oakstream Posted March 22, 2012 Report Posted March 22, 2012 The USA chant started when Miller was left out of the 2006 olympic team. He had a broken thumb at the time, but came back pretty soon and outplayed the three other goalies who made the team. That's when the crowd started chanting USA! Correct me if I'm wrong! Also, I'm a Swede, and I love that USA chant!! :)

Its not as common, and I'm sure last nigth also had to do with it being the Canadians that they were playing, but that chant has been used many times since the olympics when Miller is playing like he did in that tournament

They had a game last year where Rask started, so there wasn't a single American on the ice for Boston at any point. Meanwhile, Montreal had Gionta, Gomez, Halpern, Pacioretty (not sure if it was pre-Chara or not, so he may not have been there), and Gill dressed. So yeah, one team may have enjoyed the USA chant a bit more than the other.

DumbPuck Posted March 22, 2012 Report Posted March 22, 2012 Well, I'll admit that I didn't know the history on that chant. Since I never had the connection with the original chant it just seems out of place for me now. Perhaps also a little premature. It was in the third period but I don't remember how much time was on the clock still (5 to 10 minutes maybe?). Not really time to congratulate Miller on the shutout yet when we've given up goals in the last 5 seconds of two of our most recent games. Do you really expect Boston fans (Bostonians?) to be able to figure something like that out????? See I think of this stuff at games though. Maybe I don't drink enough beer. [1] Take a look at the video if you can find it. He gets all stick and Staff just loses his balance and falls. [2] Should we not chant Let's Go Buffalo because it will only motivate Kaleta and Foligno? and Pommer plays internationally for the good old US of A. [1] I will have to do as you say and re-watch that one. From 117 and on the jumbotron it looked pretty obvious but a different angle may show more I suppose. [2] You missed my point. "Let's Go Buffalo" for the Buffalo Sabres makes sense. "U-S-A" for the USA Olympic Team would make sense to me too. "U-S-A" for the Buffalo Sabres does not make sense to me. As everyone else explained though it sounds like this is a Miller chant that I just didn't know about.

My point was that Buffalo is in the United States, regardless of where the players are from, they play for a team in buffalo in the united states. The chant would make no sense against New Jersey or the Rangers.
X. Benedict Posted March 22, 2012 Report Posted March 22, 2012 His name is Miller. If you can't appreciate Ryan Miller's last month of work, you just don't appreciate great goal-tending.
I am Defecting Posted March 22, 2012 Report Posted March 22, 2012 I really liked (faintly) hearing the U-S-A chant. I think the point, along with encouraging Miller, was to get into the heads of the Montreal Canadians - to get them thinking about something other than the game, like others said. As a rule, if you get the other team thinking about international dynamics, they're screwed, especially as French Canadians.

LabattBlue Posted March 22, 2012 Report Posted March 22, 2012 One thing really aggravated me at the game last night. During the national anthems(both of them), Subban is moving around like a 4 year old who really needs to go to the bathroom. I'm not saying the players have to be motionless, but what he was doing was embarrassing. Nothing like drawing attention to yourself. <_<

I half heartedly defended him, saying he was just trying to stay loose, but my son called BS on that. He's such a good boy.

I appreciate it. One thing we know about Miller is he is very consistent. When he's in a slump, you know to prepare for it because he'll be in a slump for a while. When he's on his game, he is ON HIS GAME. You don't have to worry about him from game to game. But, not trying to sound negative, had he simple been average during his slump he wouldn't have to be spectacular right now for the Sabres to squeak into the playoffs. All he had to be was average. Hell, even a bit below average. But, he wasn't the only one who sucked for a long stretch. Either way, it's in the past, let's get that last spot!!!!
TrueBlueGED Posted March 22, 2012 Report Posted March 22, 2012 I believe I owe TrueBluePhD $10. :( :w00t: That's enough for 5 more Tim Horton's coffees that I can win nothing on!
