Campy Posted March 14, 2012 Report Posted March 14, 2012 If this hit was always 3 games, I don't think anybody would be complaining. But that's the problem, this hit happens probably every game and gets supplemental discipline in about .00001% of the cases. Malkin didn't even get a call from Shanahan, and I think his hit was significantly worse than what Myers did, and at least as bad. That's what makes the league a joke, and opens it up to conspiracy theories. And I guess that's where you and I see things differently: This hit doesn't happen in the majority of games that I watch. Yes, I see guys get borded, but not quite like that. (I didn't catch the Malkin hit, so I can't speak to it.) The league and on-ice officials do not appear to be consistent in many instances, I agree. But please, when you get into conspiracy theories, well, you've already lost...
X. Benedict Posted March 14, 2012 Report Posted March 14, 2012 He took out his anger on Gomez. Good choice, but definite intent to put his face through the glass. I like to think Myers skated up to his keeper and said, "That was for you Millsy." But I don't think that's how it went down.
tiredsounds Posted March 14, 2012 Report Posted March 14, 2012 But Malkin is the league's leading point getter and odds on favourite for MVP. How would that look if he were punished? it shouldn't matter. MVP or not. Malkin, Ovechkin and alike shouldn't be given a free pass just because of their status. If other sports can discipline their superstars as fairly as the other 99% then theres no reason hockey can't do the same.

If other sports can discipline their superstars as fairly as the other 99% then theres no reason hockey can't do the same. Other sports don't do it either. Clemens with the bat thrown at Piazza? Wilfork's numerous offenses? (I'm sure there's one in pro basketball, too, but I don't watch it.) Certain teams get the calls... EDIT: Hell, even that phantom penalty against Florence last year?!
DR HOLLIDAY Posted March 14, 2012 Report Posted March 14, 2012 That's the point. That's why we're upset and have a right to be. Myers didn't even get a game misconduct and he is out 3 games on his first offense? We have seen three Sabres get injured in the last 9 months on this very play with nothing. F### Shamahan. Gerbe getting hit from behind comes to mind.
Guest Posted March 14, 2012 Report Posted March 14, 2012 Petty ###### politics. In the past, Shanahan has clearly said intent plays into these suspensions - and Myers didn't look like he was trying to injure the guy. It's absolute B.S. That's why Lucic got no suspension on the Miller hit, he told Brandi Shanahan by phone that he wasn't trying to hurt Miller. Therefore no suspension was warranted. It's an absolute joke and Brandi obviously has an agenda as to who gets what. And I guess that's where you and I see things differently: This hit doesn't happen in the majority of games that I watch. Yes, I see guys get borded, but not quite like that. (I didn't catch the Malkin hit, so I can't speak to it.) The Malkin hit was as bad if not worse than Myers and there was no suspension. Someone needs to explain the difference between these two hits. Boychuk did leave the ice and went to the locker room but did return just as Gomez did. Gotta love how the Pittsburgh fans are laughing at that douchebag Boychuk. Apparently everyone outside of beantown hates the guy. http://youtu.be/JsVAlCJ5pNo
drnkirishone Posted March 14, 2012 Report Posted March 14, 2012 should have been a 1 game suspension and therefore he woulda had a record for any future offense. 3 games is just a garbage judgement from shanny and kinda shows that he is floundering in his new job
korab rules Posted March 14, 2012 Report Posted March 14, 2012 But Philly and Boston have each been hit with 3 suspensions, more (I think) than any other team. I apologize for smearing you with the broad brush. I do believe though that most of the complaints in this thread are more along the lines of conspiracy/favoritism theories and I expect better from this group. I agree that there is plenty of inconsistency and that this is a real problem. I don't understand how the hit on Gaustad wasn't suspension-worthy, and there are myriad other examples. I think he's the head of a 3-person panel that reviews questionable hits and makes the decisions. Care to revisit this?
Bmwolf21 Posted March 14, 2012 Report Posted March 14, 2012 personally I hope gomez has a concussion because I hate him. Yea, Im gonna be that guy. I hope he's just OK enough to maintain his current level of play. Yeah, I'm that guy.
Eleven Posted March 14, 2012 Report Posted March 14, 2012 I hope he's just OK enough to maintain his current level of play. Yeah, I'm that guy. Now that's funny.
spndnchz Posted March 14, 2012 Report Posted March 14, 2012 Joke. Ur a friggin' joke. How does it differ from Malkin? Ur a friggin' joke. That said, we should be ok with our backups.

korab rules Posted March 14, 2012 Report Posted March 14, 2012 Poker Face. Lady G! That's what I said.

Clearly that was my point. Malkin's hit was worse IMO

RazielSabre Posted March 14, 2012 Report Posted March 14, 2012 After watching the player safety video I'd say Myers did deserve it. Inconsistent rulings or not, Myers knew better than to do that. 3 games may be a bit strong but definitely miss a game or two.
kishoph Posted March 14, 2012 Report Posted March 14, 2012 Shanahan says he took Myers history of never being suspended or fined into account, where ? Good thing he didn't have a history of offenses, he would of been gone for 10 games.
lalalalalaFontaine Posted March 14, 2012 Report Posted March 14, 2012 Truly. Because everyone knows Washington DC is a hockey hotbed.... Where in the world are you getting this from? Myers drilled a guy from behind with intent. He had just been hit with a high stick and was PO'd and took it on a defenseless guy. My dislike for Gomez is no excuse to justify that type of play. Myers earned the suspension, My only gripe is that more guys don't get a similar punishment for doing a similar act. ratings my friend...

Nothing wrong with that.
Sabre Dance Posted March 14, 2012 Report Posted March 14, 2012 I truly believe that Brendan Shanahan could easily be replaced by a "wheel of misfortune". On it are various fines and suspensions; the 0 and 00 spots are labeled "Banned for life". Anyone in need of supplementary discipline just spins the wheel and whatever comes up, that's their penalty. It would be much more entertaining and just as random as the current system. It has gotten to the point where all you need to do is to look at a player's "star" status in the league and that determines the length (or absence) of fines/suspensions. Each instance like this just throws another shovelful of dirt on the NHL's credibility. I don't trust anyone in a league office to be unbiased or even fair. It all depends on how much money and influence the team owner has. If you play for Nashville, Minnesota or (yes) Buffalo, a hit like the one Myers delivered will get you three games in the press box. The same hit delivered by a player in Philly, Boston or Detroit will get you a bigger contract next year.
