it's starting to look like Sulzer is the best player of the entire trade.

The Sabres must have gotten some input from the Hoff, Sulzer is the Hoff's D partner on the German national team. Those guys really work well together. Sulzer is steady and plays it safe freeing up the Hoff to do his stuff.

Actually, over the past few years Roy has been the most consistent point producer this team has.

Does anyone know when or where the "Roy is a cancer" or "Roy is poisoning the locker room" started? Posters like to toss that around when they don't like a player, I am wondering if there is any merit to it at all.

1. That's exactly why if he goes, the Sabres have to get a real player in return. Like you and others, I'm not averse to seeing him in another sweater, but he isn't the complete waste that Stafford is.

2. No idea. I doubt that there is merit to it. We would have heard something from a reputable source by this point. All we have is the much-denied rumor that he punched Tim Connolly, which should have made him a hero in the dressing room, if it actually happened.

Paul Hamilton on WGR has consistently stirred the pot on Roy being a locker rom cancer. Specifically, he cited an unnamed player last year when Roy got hurt as saying "watch how much better we'll be without him". He's also mentioned Roy handing out flyers for his toga party in the lockerroom immediately following a team meeting and several other examples.

I'm not suggesting there's any merit to Hamilton's claims but I believe the meme started with he and Bulldog on WGR beating that particular drum.

Someone please slap me and tell me Hodgson will not morph into Connolly.

I am more concerned that he is a younger Ville Leino. He has flashy moves that don't translate into points

Relax everyone. Put it into perspective. Since the 19th of feb buffalo has had this sked. Home, home, home. Away to NYR. Then away to Anaheim, SJ, Van, Winnipeg. Home, away Boston, Ottawa.

Cody in the same time. From Van to Edm, Nash, Det, NJ, Phoenix, Buffalo (team physical), Anaheim, SJ, Van, Winnipeg. Home, away Boston, Ottawa.

Ya think he might be bagged?

Give him a chance to get caught up on some z's

I like what Leino does atm. He is not putting up hugh scoring numbers but he looks a lot like the player we saw last year. Strong on the puck doing the little things right and creating and aweful lot of space for his linemen... there were 2 situations last night when he entered the zone all alone as his teammates where changing. Instead of shooting it in he did a great hob of holding on to it and played the drop pass back to the blueline so slowly that the Dmen arrived just in time to hold it in the zone. In fact the 2nd time he did that it ended up being a goal for the sabres (ennis).

Leino looked pretty solid last night.

BTW, Pominville is 15th in the league with 62 points after 69 games. Vanek is at 56 with 50 points and 65 games.

Then waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay down the stats, in 130th place in the league, with only 36 points after 66 games, is Ruff's beloved "son" Derek Roy. Yeah, the same lazy chowdah-head that takes a boatload of game killing penalties including hooking his own teammate to the ice. Even further down at 138th place is Drew Stafford with only 33 after 66 games.

BTW, I should have looked - Cody Hodgson is tied with Stafford down in the cellar with only 33 points - but he's played more games than Stafford so his average points per game is slightly lower than the lifeless Stafford. It shouldn't be much of a surprise that he's gotten zilch for points so far, he doesn't get many in the best of times.

The other thing that makes Pommers stellar this season - his PIM is only 12.

But... the point is... there's not much in the stats that would make me want to keep Roy or Stafford on the team. We've seen what they can do, and it's lacking. And they're lazy and soft. Lots of times I see those guys fail to pursue the puck, or half-heartedly skate after it. Contrast that with Gerbe - couple times last night his legs were just windmilling as he charged into the fray. I saw nothing like that level of exertion from Stafford or Roy.

The thing is - I think they got the talent to be better - but they don't try hard. Get rid of 'em and get some players on fire to win.

If there is any time to start a real winning streak, not one of those little 3-4 gamers, it is now. I know we haven't had anything more than four-five wins in a row in the last 4+ years, but our next five, theoretically, would be considered winnable games. This team should be playing with enough desperation to get a streak going against the likes of montreal, Colorado, Florida, and Tampa. Let's go boys. It's your 8th place to take.

People like to write their own narratives.

Never mind that there's a sizable handful of guys who have slumped just as badly as Roy this season, and never mind that he led the team in points for 3 consecutive years after the departure of Briere/Drury...he's obviously a bum and a cancer.

People, watch the games. The team rallies around Roy when he scores just as much as any other player.

That's an interesting metric. The way to detect a locker room cancer is to see if the other players don't celebrate when that player scores? I can't remember ever seeing that happen in all my years of watching hockey. By that standard, there has never been a locker room cancer.

1. That's exactly why if he goes, the Sabres have to get a real player in return. Like you and others, I'm not averse to seeing him in another sweater, but he isn't the complete waste that Stafford is.

Yeah, this, too.

Specifically, he cited an unnamed player last year when Roy got hurt as saying "watch how much better we'll be without him". I'm not suggesting there's any merit to Hamilton's claims but I believe the meme started with he and Bulldog on WGR beating that particular drum.

Hamilton and Chris Parker have mentioned a few stories about his antics. The players-only meeting after a loss that turned into Roy distributing flyers for his toga party is the tame one they actually detailed. Like with Connolly, Bulldog and Hamilton don't want to air too much dirty laundry about players on the radio. (They always hinted about problems with Connolly. I've since heard some details from a friend in law enforcement and, sure enough, he really was a bad guy.)

Being popular with other players and being a good influence are two different things. For all his talent, Roy isn't a hard working player on the ice. And it doesn't sound like the team's struggles the past few years bother him all that much off the ice. Last year he famously "got it" and openly said he was more dedicated to being his best. Where was that before? Why did it take so long to kick in? And was it permanent? Unfortunately, I don't think work ethic fluctuates that much for people once they're adults.

I don't think it's a coincidence that the team played it's best hockey in the post-Black Sunday era when Roy was gone. I also don't think it's a coincidence that the Sabres were "close" to trading him last summer and again at the deadline this year. He's a talented guy who doesn't bring out the best in those around him.

It's time to move on. He's part of the post-Black Sunday core that didn't work out. Clear him out and hand the team over to guys like Ennis and Myers.

Like him or not, Roy is currently the only Center on the team with NHL game. If the Sabres are going to do anything of note this season/post-season Roy is going to have to start producing. He picked up a point last night. Roy tends to be a bit streaky these days, you have to hope that one point sets off another streak.

I posted elsewhere that the bigger the game, the SMALLER is Roy. Frankly, I don't care what he's done in the regular season, because he's almost a guaranteed whiff when it matters most. That's why I suggest sending him down to Rochester and keeping Foligno. It's just my way of saying, "Get the old trailer trash off the team and bring in someone with guts and a will to win whatever it takes."

Yeah, we got the Canadiens twice in the next 10 days Montreal is only 64 points and has a losing record. Lightning - 69 points.

These are three games we gotta win - both the Panthers and the Avalanche have more points than we do, and the Avalanche have more wins for the season- those aren't gonna be any duck walks, lemme tell ya.

I too like Leino's play.

This right here is my biggest beef with Roy.

The Bruins series seems to be when things turned sour for Roy. He was linked to Connolly as the two players that cost the Sabres the series.

Nathan Gerbe is 241st in points, 295th in goals. He has scored just six times.

I agree with the bitching and moaning about Stafford and Roy. I love Gerbe's hustle.

But this guy scored 15 times in the back half of the season last year and has been just as disappointing from an offensive point of view as the rest of our regular whipping boys.

I said it a few days ago in a game night thread, but no one responded: Gerbe doesn't score, rarely forces turnovers or draws penalties like he did last year, rarely contributes on special teams and obviously doesn't intimidate anybody.

All he does is skate hard. If he was a fourth-liner adding spark and speed to a big team his performance would be fine.

Instead he is a third-liner on one of the smallest teams in the league and he, like so many others, is simply not getting it done this year.

I love the guy and want him to succeed, but it's supposed to be about results.

I'm not sure why he gets a free pass.

I mentioned the same thing earlier in this thread, but he scored right away to negate my point. I still agree with you though, he is pretty useless without goals this year.

Gerbe leads the forwards in +/-

Stafford, Lieno, Boyes, Roy, Hecht $20 million 116 points $172,413 per point

Gerbe $1.25 million 24 points $52,083 per point

Hence, Free Pass

Hit the rest of his post, not just a sentence, if you're going to get at it. And it's an easy enough target, too.
