Zamboni Driver Posted March 4, 2012 Report Posted March 4, 2012 Just wondering why you guys seem so down on Gragnani? I can see people getting peeved at an experienced D-man that keeps coughing up the puck ( ie Kaberle), but MAG has only had a few dozen NHL games, (AFAIK) don't you think he can improve his defensive play?
Randall Flagg Posted March 4, 2012 Report Posted March 4, 2012 A general rule of thumb for sabres fans is that if a player gives a puck away to someone (giroux) in overtime against a team they lost to in the playoffs last year, they receive no mercy. Ever again.
Trettioåtta Posted March 4, 2012 Report Posted March 4, 2012 He can't hold onto the puck to save his life and he isn't aware he is a defenceman Also recently i dislike him for using the word good instead of well
Punch Posted March 4, 2012 Report Posted March 4, 2012 Gragnani showed a lot of promise after his call up toward the end of last season and in the playoffs, but it didn't quite carry over to this year. Of course he's young, but he seems to shy away from contact. In fact, a local radio reporter that has covered the Sabres for 20 years says he's never seen an NHL player so afraid of getting hit. His plus/minus is somewhat inflated when you consider that 64% of his shift starts take plus in the offensive zone, far and away the most in the league. He has a tremendous feel for passing but is not particularly adept at carrying the puck. As I said, he's young, but in a crowded D group, Ruff and fans grew impatient. I'm pretty confident he'll be energized and focused with a new start in Vancouver.
drnkirishone Posted March 4, 2012 Report Posted March 4, 2012 My opinion on defensmen is as such. You can not be physical and still excel if you are good with your positioning and great with your stick. MAG gets completely lost in his defensive coverage and is horrible using his stick. Now for young offensive defensemen that could be correctable. But MAG isn't all that young anymore he has 4 years of development in the AHL plus this season. IMO he is at best a 2nd line PP quaterback with a crappy shot and at worst a complete waste of a roster spot. Maybe he can turn it around with you in vancouver, but if I was betting I would say he is in the AHL or overseas playing hockey in 2 years
inkman Posted March 4, 2012 Report Posted March 4, 2012 Also recently i dislike him for using the word good instead of well +1
Weave Posted March 4, 2012 Report Posted March 4, 2012 It's not really hate. He's just not good enough to crack the top 6 in Lindy's system. And yeah, he's not keen on contact.
TrueBlueGED Posted March 4, 2012 Report Posted March 4, 2012 In general, my problem with MAG isn't that he doesn't hit....I have a problem that he's afraid to be hit. If a forechecker is lining him up for a hit, it's about 95% he's going to turn the puck over by trying to avoid the hit, or make a bad pass to avoid the hit. Can't play scared.

I am not sure there is a system in the NHL that he could stay in the top 6. Maybe Columbus, but I am thinking they would get fed up with him also

SarasotaSabre Posted March 4, 2012 Report Posted March 4, 2012 Rumor also has it he tweeted pretty negatively while he was riding pine and was implying that "other guys" on the Sabres were not happy with Lindy - not saying I saw proof of this, I believe I heard Hamilton comment to this effect. Stuff like this makes MAGS easier to dislike.

Johnny DangerFace Posted March 4, 2012 Report Posted March 4, 2012 he plays defense but can't play defense and likes to turn the puck over?
drnkirishone Posted March 4, 2012 Report Posted March 4, 2012 he plays defense but can't play defense and likes to turn the puck over? It's kinda like a nascar driver that can only turn right and gets motion sickness
... Posted March 4, 2012 Report Posted March 4, 2012 He's soft, normally. As TrueBlue said, he's afraid to take a hit, and his hockey IQ isn't that sharp. Prone to panicking. Good passer, though, for the most part. I dislike the look of his face, he always looks like his tongue is hanging out. I actually dislike him more for all of the little dirty things he was pulling tonight.
87168 Posted March 4, 2012 Report Posted March 4, 2012 Eh MAGs isn't really a player that I "hate" he's just there. I say that now because he is not on our team. When he was on our team, I did not like him.
Marvelo Posted March 4, 2012 Report Posted March 4, 2012 1. He looks like Connelly with that shaved head of his. 2. He's a tease: he has potential but never showed it consistently. 3. He can play point on the pp but has the yips on defense. 4. He fits right in on Vancouver, the most hated team in the league. 5. His last name is hard to pronounce.
North Buffalo Posted March 4, 2012 Report Posted March 4, 2012 1. He looks like Connelly with that shaved head of his. 2. He's a tease: he has potential but never showed it consistently. 3. He can play point on the pp but has the yips on defense. 4. He fits right in on Vancouver, the most hated team in the league. 5. His last name is hard to pronounce. The Canucks are not the most hated team? Actually, I like the Canucks, they came in the same year as the Sabres and if there is a team in the Western Conference I root for its them. Hard to pronounce??? You obviously didn't grow up in Buffalo... Not sure if he fits in Coover, but last night he played more physical which is even more infuriated, because he has lots of chances to show in Buffalo and didn't. Still he was a minus 2 which is typical. The real frustrating part about Grags is that it is all right there but for whatever reason he didn't or couldn't put it all together. The hate also comes from Ruff's insistence on giving the guy chance after chance probably because of injury and he wouldn't do anything with it. I say good riddance, but if he does good with the Canucks for the Canucks sake that is a good thing. Hate is not the right word though, pure frustration and well exasperation. :wallbash:
