Claude_Verret Posted March 2, 2012 Report Posted March 2, 2012 So, just how many fracking eyes does Cody have on his head? These one-touch, tape to tape passes should be illegal. His skating is average. His physicality is very much below average. His ability to know where every person is on the ice, the direction they are going, and when they will arrive at certain spots freaks the crap out of me. Agreed. That set up of Ennis was sick, and should have been buried.
LastPommerFan Posted March 2, 2012 Report Posted March 2, 2012 Agreed. That set up of Ennis was sick, and should have been buried. No one on this team expects their centerman to be able to make passes like that. The puck being on their stick surprises them. Hopefully they can get used to it.

X. Benedict Posted March 2, 2012 Report Posted March 2, 2012 His skating is average. the funny thing about his skating though, he moves as fast with the puck as he does without. Which makes him according to situation above and below average at the same time.

Which is weird for a center. He one-touch passes far more often than he accepts a pass and moves with it. The bright spot there is that he just isn't dumping it randomly - it is actually hitting an open guy every time. Which is spooky how well he does that.

Watching him play is like your first time with a woman after a long stint in prison. It's not like we haven't had people playing the position, but it just didn't feel right, and often looked ugly.
SDS Posted March 2, 2012 Author Report Posted March 2, 2012 they are talking Hodgson vs. Kassian out in Vancouver... http://www.teamradio.ca/ stream on the team 1040 Missed it. Just caught the part about Leino, Boyes, Stafford's miserable seasons.
LTS Posted March 2, 2012 Report Posted March 2, 2012 As one of the guys who "bellyached" about moving Ennis back to wing I'll say that I agree, those two did look good together. But I suspect he and Leino would look good together as well. I'm just a bit concerned for our lack of a 3rd center. I don't think it is a good idea to put Leino in a 3rd line center spot. Still, Hodgson def looked good with Ennis last night. Worth continuing to look at. I'm sure the Leino 3rd line is either temporary or evolves to a larger checking/scoring line next year. Depends on who's in the top 6. He's filling in nicely though. Had some good puck control last night.. also had some moments that weren't good. Hello all, just made an account here. I've always liked the Sabres a bit but the Canucks are my number one team. I started following Buffalo more when Erhroff went there in Free-Agency and now that you have Hodgson too I'll be watching a lot more Sabres games!! Cody has been one of my favourites since he was drafted, I was devistated when he was traded. Anyways enough about me and more about Cody, the Sabres deffinitely got the better end of this deal the kid has great vision, great hands, and a lot of heart. I'm sure you've all seen that brilliant slapper past Thomas, but he beat Jimmy Howard twice this year with that move too. He is just as good without the puck as he is with it, his offensive zone posistioning is excellent and he has a nack for scoring big goals against tough teams right when you need one. I can't praise him enough, take good care of Cody for us and don't be surprised if he turns into a franchise player. Thanks for stopping by and sharing! We'll be (okay, I'll be) equally interested to see how Kassian does in Vancouver. I already worked out my coping mechanism: when he messes up I'm going to pretend it's actually Connolly and yell accordingly. When he does something good/great, he's Hodgson. Is it wrong when someone said "He's wearing 19, you know what other Buffalo center wore 19" that I thought Holzinger first? I had to be reminded that TC wore 19... or more to the point I had to be reminded that TC was a Sabre. Sad... on my part. I'm waiting to see how Hodgson plays against the Eastern Conference. Right now he's playing teams that he's accustomed to seeing night in and night out. Regardless of LR's system he has a better understanding of the Ducks and Sharks system. I like what I've seen though. He's used his body to control the puck a bit longer and has moved nicely on the ice. The plus is that he seems to be winning a high percentage of faceoffs as well.

Watching him play is like your first time with a woman after a long stint in prison. I would feel better if he could carry the puck into the zone reliably.. Although if he can dish and accomplish the same thing, I guess I shouldn't complain. Still, look at the time the puck was on Ennis' stick compared to Cody.
X. Benedict Posted March 2, 2012 Report Posted March 2, 2012 Missed it. Just caught the part about Leino, Boyes, Stafford's miserable seasons. Ray Ferraro was saying he thought Kassian would change everyone's mind out in Vancouver.... Key for Vancouver against Buffalo would be crowding Miller down low. Nice discussion about what goalies go through coming back from concussion.

Although if he can dish and accomplish the same thing, I guess I shouldn't complain. Still, look at the time the puck was on Ennis' stick compared to Cody. You don't have to be a waterbug who can dance through traffic to be an effective center - the puck moves a lot faster than anyone in the league. So far he appears equally capable of putting the puck on the tape of wingers in scoring positions and finding those scoring positions himself. I see why Vancouver fans are pissed about giving him up. And he backchecks like a mofo. I see nothing not to love at this point - he definitely has #1 center upside. Hopefully Gary Roberts can add some muscle to that frame - he is pretty strong on his skates now - add 10 lbs of muscle and he will be a beast.
BarDown Posted March 2, 2012 Report Posted March 2, 2012 Agreed...Hodgson looks great so far...I believe he took #19 because that was his # in juniors. Who's this Connolly guy everyone keeps mentioning?
That Aud Smell Posted March 2, 2012 Report Posted March 2, 2012 Hello all, just made an account here. I started following Buffalo more when Erhroff went there in Free-Agency and now that you have Hodgson too I'll be watching a lot more Sabres games!! Cody has been one of my favourites since he was drafted, I was devistated when he was traded. thanks for posting, and welcome. i'm sort of fascinated by what appears to be a more "current" trend of young fans of not only cheering for their hometown team (and i mean that to include the kid born in the carolinas whose "home" team is the sabres because his dad/mom is from buffalo), but also cheering for specific players and, by extension, the teams for which they play. i've got a buddy living in buffalo whose oldest is a diehard patrtiots fan because the kid just loves tom brady. (and as much as i hate brady, i have to respect the purity of the kid's devotion.) and these aren't isolated instances -- younger people the world over seem more inclined to build allegiances based on a variety of things, including whether they really like a particular player. i'm sort of over my black socks/shorts/comfortable shoes reaction to this modern trend, and am just accepting it for what it is. So, just how many fracking eyes does Cody have on his head? These one-touch, tape to tape passes should be illegal. His skating is average. His physicality is very much below average. I think in the long run you may not be too disappointed in Kassian either. He has the potential to turn into a very good power forward. He is hard on the puck especially along the boards. Can only knock him down or the puck away from him as he rarely gets pushed off . I think it's cool both teams came into the league the same year and have yet to win a cup but I think your teams a bit closer. I also do not have a problem liking and rooting for Vancover from teh Western league against anybody else but Buffalo expecially after you got rid of those horrible late seveties early eighties jerseys. :P but maybe thats a bit before your time. Anywho welcome. :flirt:

That Aud Smell Posted March 2, 2012 Report Posted March 2, 2012 I love that Hodgson and Cattenacci train with G. SDS Posted March 2, 2012 Author Report Posted March 2, 2012 BTW, Cody on the ice last 30 seconds of the game to help close it out.
... Posted March 2, 2012 Report Posted March 2, 2012 I disagree on the "below average physicality" assessment. He finishes his checks, which is more than a lot of other Sabres forwards can say. I also saw him backcheck with his body a few times last night, as opposed to trying to stick check once he was in position. Also, these same back checks were deep in his zone, right near Miller. My only complaint is his skating. Once he's going, his speed is average, like I said before, about as fast as Stafford. His acceleration IS slow. I think he can work on that, though. Lindy can get him on a summer program to improve his skating.
Trettioåtta Posted March 2, 2012 Report Posted March 2, 2012 +2 in two games, not too shabby when you think we have only scored 3 goals in those games, one of which was on the powerplay
TrueBlueGED Posted March 2, 2012 Report Posted March 2, 2012 +2 in two games, not too shabby when you think we have only scored 3 goals in those games, one of which was on the powerplay If Stafford or Ennis had converted his passes, he'd have a couple assists too. Anyway, I agree with most of what has been said about his skating. It's average, but certainly not a liability. As Sizzle said, hopefully in the offseason he can work to become a bit quicker. I also don't see the issue with his physicality. I wasn't expect him to be Peca. He goes into the dirty areas and has really nice puck possession when he's not busy 1-tapping gorgeous passes.
darksabre Posted March 2, 2012 Report Posted March 2, 2012 His ability to control the puck around the net has been noticeable as well. He does a good job of putting his body between the defender and the puck, which is something Stafford seems to have no idea how to do.
rickshaw Posted March 2, 2012 Report Posted March 2, 2012 Just curious -- why do you say this? Last year they were #1 in the NHL in both offense and defense. This year they are #4 and #5 -- still pretty GD strong, but not quite as good as last year. Also, Kesler seems to be coming on, but he isn't having a huge year like he had last year. Addition of Booth is a huge improvement over Samuelsson. Defense is just as good, even with Ehrhoff gone. Grit element. Bitz, Weiss and now Kassian. All can play the role. Weiss is a little small but he's not afraid. Goaltending is still great and both can play and WILL play in the playoffs. Paulsonn is a shut down player so Kesler doesn't have to be that and the offense guy too. They just have a more balanced squad. Their bigger and they're slightly better on each line. I think their roster now beats last year's roster head to head. Remember, each and every night the other team is up for them. They are better suited to handle the grind of the dance this year. IMO.
stepped IN zhitnik Posted March 2, 2012 Report Posted March 2, 2012 I get the impression (by mostly what I've read about clutch, but not that much accel....) that he is going to be our next Chris Drury?
