waldo Posted February 27, 2012 Report Posted February 27, 2012 Well that's what I'm waiting for as well. As long as he's not Derek Roy I expect many will be satisfied. i doubt lindy will let him anywhere near vanek and pom
mrm33064 Posted February 27, 2012 Report Posted February 27, 2012 Do you think it's completely out of the realm of possibility at this point? Something's clearly different around here, I'm just not sure how different it is yet. Let's hope. Trading Kassian - a guy who was unfairly ascribed legendary qualities solely because many Sabres fans (including me) desperately wanted him to have those qualities - didn't strike me as something that would earn Darcy riverboat gambler credentials. But I liked the trade, and getting a 1st for a decent short-term rental was darn good value to be sure. IMO, Darcy has done a great job consistently IDing solid, above-average young talent and providing depth. I think he's among the best in the league at it, and the results can be seen. However, his other "GM skills" - payroll negotiations, free agent acquisitions (and losses), trading record, etc. - seem very fair to question. He had a good day today, but after watching Darcy for 10+ years I still wonder what other deals were out there (Roy, Stafford, etc.) that didn't get done. It's a counterpoint, but a mild one. Overall, I think it was a good day for the Sabres.
Who Else? Posted February 27, 2012 Report Posted February 27, 2012 Well that's what I'm waiting for as well. As long as he's not Derek Roy I expect many will be satisfied. Maybe this puts a little more pressure on Roy to perform. Doubt it, but it is wishful thinking.
darksabre Posted February 27, 2012 Report Posted February 27, 2012 i doubt lindy will let him anywhere near vanek and pom That has nothing to do with the conversation.
TheChimp Posted February 27, 2012 Report Posted February 27, 2012 I like the words "possible Calder candidate" and "first-round pick". But we got alot smaller and gave up a top pick of our own that I had THOUGHT the team saw alot of promise in. Anyway, I'd rather wait until these trades have a chance to actually pan out before I make a decision. I am happy Darcy had a phone under his desk, though, that I'll say :)
Trettioåtta Posted February 27, 2012 Report Posted February 27, 2012 I think we can get bigger. Those two firsts and two seconds and our excess of top 9 players we have mean we have a shot at more trades at the draft. We get the centre we need, and 6' 180-190 is not that small. We resign Goose this offseason and we have some of our size back. Being strong through the middle is more important than size (my opinion) Cody is a leader. He could well be our future captain

TheMatrix31 Posted February 27, 2012 Report Posted February 27, 2012 Today helped, and if it works out then I'll be happier. Whether it's luck or knowing the market, trading Gaustad for a 1st while still (well, according to some of you guys commenting about it) having the chance to just re-sign him in the offseason anyway? Pretty nice.

nucci Posted February 27, 2012 Report Posted February 27, 2012 I've always thought Regier was a decent GM. My opinion on Ruff has changed a lot, though.
PromoTheRobot Posted February 27, 2012 Report Posted February 27, 2012 Actually dark one he is listed at 185 and if you see him in person, in street clothes he is 175 max.. A nice third line center/ player but not know for his physical presence...Have seen him play maybe 30 games? Ok on the pp ..no better or worse than Roy on the pp,,time will tell ..if lindy gets him ..no hope. Okay, eagle-eye! Reading people's assessment of Darcy Regier is high comedy. Folks who rarely leave their basements and know all they know of the NHL playing XBOX pontificating on what Darcy is expected to do. Darcy proved again he knows what he's doing. And to those who say he won't take risks, I think holding out for a #1 for Gaustad was pretty risky. That blowhard Brian Burke who said Darcy overvalues his players would have schatt his BVDs playing that kind of poker. So eff the haters and eff Bucky Gleason...Darcy's back, baby! PTR
Weave Posted February 28, 2012 Report Posted February 28, 2012 Okay, eagle-eye! PTR Cut him some slack. In the summer he runs the "guess your weight" booth at carnivals.
... Posted February 28, 2012 Report Posted February 28, 2012 I like the moves he made today. I still don't like Darcy, but I'm willing to give these moves a chance to work out. It's the first deadline I can remember where he actually addressed a real need on this team. Woid.
waldo Posted February 28, 2012 Report Posted February 28, 2012 Christ - no one knew who he was 3 hours ago and now he's a future captain? How can we know that before we even know what number he will wear? thank you ...our 22 year old ,yet to play a 70+ game season, captain ?.Right now he is just Luke Adam.

PTR Perfectly reasonable to think so. But aren't Leino, Boyes, Stafford, Roy, Regehr...and who else....still playing some of their worst hockey of their veteran years? I still do not see an identity forming here, and Kassian, again, I thought, sorta signified a change for the bigger, meaner NHL, and here we abandoned that yet again...or so it seems.... Again, too early, on either side of this fence... but I like your optimism.
SDS Posted February 28, 2012 Report Posted February 28, 2012 Christ - no one knew who he was 3 hours ago and now he's a future captain? How can we know that before we even know what number he will wear? Sounds like he has been captain on multiple teams including the Canada world Jr. team that won it all, plus he was captain of the Brampton Battalion. So, it isn't like he hasn't done it before.
darksabre Posted February 28, 2012 Report Posted February 28, 2012 I think it gets argued a lot around here that this team needs a "born leader" for a captain. Hodgson's history of taking responsibility is nothing to ignore. While it is certainly too soon to label him as a future captain, I think his history as a player allows one to fantasize about the possibilities. I don't see any harm in that.

He finds talent, he pulls off deals, he's done it before. In fact I could see Terry giving Darcy a pep talk to know he has his support before he pulled these off. PTR

darksabre Posted February 28, 2012 Report Posted February 28, 2012 Sounds a little like Derek Roy Except Derek Roy is a little punk who runs his mouth and hasn't grown up since he broke into the Sabres lineup.

TrueBlueGED Posted February 28, 2012 Report Posted February 28, 2012 Has my opinion changed, as in gone from "I want him fired" to "Stanley Cup baby!"?? No, absolutely not. One day and two trades are not going to convince me that he's capable of constructing a team that can compete for the Cup every single year, let alone win it. But I'm not going to let that taint my evaluation of what he did today, which in my opinion, was improve the team. He maximized the crap out of Gaustad's value and got a return I didn't think possible. He showed a willingness to trade a coveted prospect to fill a gaping hole in the roster. Those are both positives to me. He still has to find a way to shed salary to give the team flexibility, break up the core that can't get it done, and inject some more size/toughness into the lineup. I'd still like to see somebody fresh in charge of hockey operations with a neutral perspective on the core makeup of the team, but Darcy did some things today I didn't think he could/would, and I'm willing to give him credit for it.
Ghost of Dwight Drane Posted February 28, 2012 Report Posted February 28, 2012 Except Derek Roy is a little punk who runs his mouth and hasn't grown up since he broke into the Sabres lineup. you need to read the article Rickshaw posted. Hodgson refused treatment from Canucks training staff and got his own doctors, his father got into a spat with the coach, he refused to show up to prospects camp the next year. His success this year caught everyone by surprise given his history with the team. I'm just sayin.....I don't want to villify the guy, he's still a kid. We are just seeing a little Christmas Morning Syndrome here. A new toy is awesome for a few weeks, then gets tossed into the pile with the 19 others. Picking this kid up is fine. I just wish it was Stafford and Leopold instead of Kassian.
wjag Posted February 28, 2012 Report Posted February 28, 2012 I'm still squarely agnostic to Darcy. Devil you know I guess.. you need to read the article Rickshaw posted.
