Absolutely. The Lucic game was an afront to the hockey Gods. They broke the code for the whole world to see. The thing is, and I know the usual suspects may rip me for this, I think Ruff was just as surprised by the player's reaction as we were. There have been so many times in his coaching history (not to mention his playing history) where he's deliberately sent out a posse to clean up after an event on the ice. The Neal hit on Drury comes to mind. But Lucic needed to be answered IMMEDIATELY by whomever was on the ice at the time. That's what the code calls for. And Ruff couldn't do anything but watch.

GO SABRES!!!

I will let some others rip you apart for this ... it's not good for my disposition ... :P .

All I will say is ...

The team is a reflection of the coach and vise versa. It should not be up to LR to tell his players what to do when the Lucic incident happened.

And fans sometimes wonder why coaches/players do nothing but give cliche after cliche after cliche. Heaven forbid they be honest, and have interesting things to say, then they have the media/fans jumping down their throat. Ruff is honest about some reasons Kassian was parted with, Miller is honest about his feelings regarding the Gaustad trade....and they get micro-analyzed and criticized for what they said. I'd stick to the cliches too.

Thank you. My feelings exactly.

Furthermore, as far as Ruff "hating toughness"--- an impotent man doesn't hate ###### his wife... he might just need his heart medication more than Viagra.

That is a pretty broad generalization.

Exactly my point. Which is precisely why they WEREN'T a reflection of Lindy Ruff at that moment.

I think the players were a perfect reflection of LR during the immediate aftermath of the Lucic hit on Miller. The players sat on their hands and so did LR ... the exact opposite (both for LR and his players) of what happened immediately after the Neal hit on Drury.

My, oh my how things have changed.

or he could be just being honest about why they let the guy go.

fair deuce. i'm not sure why i posited the ulterior motive -- i think my original point was just that he was being candid.

i have no problem with what miller said -- it's the sort of thing i expect from him (remember his interview about the over-the-glass penalty that campbell took in game 7 of the ECF?) -- he's an emotional and somewhat moody guy.

and i have no problem with ruff being honest and candid ... about his team, about his team's opponents, about specific games, specific plays, whatever. but when it comes to pontificating on how a former prospect will develop ... i just thought it was gratuitous.

Furthermore, as far as Ruff "hating toughness"--- an impotent man doesn't hate ###### his wife... he might just need his heart medication more than Viagra.

try as i might, i can't unravel this metaphor.

Excuse me! ... watch the video ... LR went ballistic and practically went for Murray on the Ottawa bench.

Again, the players reflect the coach and vise versa.

That's a fair point. Perhaps that's the vice-versa you mentioned.

Dropping F bombs ready to fight Murray with Rob Ray standing in betweeen the 2. That fire is no where to be found anywheres on this current team

an impotent man = Ruff

###### his wife = toughness

heart medication = Hodgeson

Viagra = Kassian

I think the Sabres realize they need both skilled centermen and physical forwards, and I think they hedged their bets that Hodgson's potential return was greater than Kassian's. Trading Kassian and his potential doesn't mean Ruff and the Sabres hate toughness. In this case they valued their heart medication over Viagra. If they refuse to address toughness in the forward ranks in the offseason I'll be apoplectic.

BizNasty2point0 Paul Bissonnette

Getting a lot of hate from Canucks fans. I asked 9 to fight. He said no. No big deal. 9's a good player. I'm just trying to do my job.

Well....those 4 players equal 25% of the salary cap.......so maybe it isn't such a stretch to question a recent deal from the same GM that signed all...that.....GARBAGE?

And if that is garbage....what is Hecht and Boyes at another $7 million and change? Over 1/3 of your current roster is Garbage in that case.

I think most people have already judged it as a good deal, and haven't been looking for reasons to denounce it. Nobody forgot that Darcy's the one who got us into this mess.

I think that reflects very positively on Kassian. Good for him in not taking the bait in a close game, etc. I'm sure it would have been a different story if he was on the ice and Bissonette cheap-shotted him or a teammate.

There is no question the kid can use his fists and won't back down when directly challenged. We've seen that. But that's not what being a physical player means. Not by a long shot. It's every other aspect of playing a physical game that he needs to work on while developing his promising offensive game.

I've already read a post this morning implying that Hodgson better watch out on Saturday night. Preposterous stuff.

okay. i think i failed to follow you because i either don't perceive or agree with the corresponding elements bolded above.

I'm glad Kassian declined the fight. I don't think the toughness Vancouver was after was a guy to fight another team's goon for no real reason.

Well put, toughness doesn't always mean just fighting and why risk taking an extra costly penalty in a tight game.

Wonder if the players will go with hodsie, hodder, codes, "g" (my fav but unlikely), or something else...

Isn't that what the Flyers call Giroux?

I like it though simply because of the irony.

Not necessarily. Vancouver fans, and the NHL media in general, has been labeling Kassian as the Lucic-killer, the piece that was missing from the Canucks' run to the Stanley Cup when they got pushed around by Boston. It doesn't seem like much of a stretch then to wonder why Buffalo, an infamously soft team, would give up that kind of player when it seems like that would be the kind of player they need ('concept' or otherwise).

because we need an elite #1 center prospect 10x as bad. Its easier to find grit than talent.

I'm not suggesting Ruff is impotent or that Kassian today equates that missing toughness element--- to me, that's the perception being put across in the argument that "Ruff hates toughness" and I was merely using strongish language.
