Paul Gaustad to Nashville

Well, the ONE move that was made was at least decent.. and you give up a rental player. I guess the rest of the roster can wait until the off season. It was a very underwhelming day overall.

I can only imagine what the hell the asking price for Roy was.. but it seems like he could have been moved.

I think it was speculated that the asking price was a young top 6 forward and either a prospect or pick.

I'll respond with the same question...does it really matter?

Well...if Nashville wins a playoff series, that pick will be between 23 and 30.

The Sabres 4th pick will be somewhere between 93-100. The 5th is 123-130.

When all is said and done, moving from say 96 to 25 is really nice, but wouldn't a similar return be say......moving Gaustad to a team on the fringe of making the playoffs for their 2nd and holding on to your 4th?

Say you trade to Toronto....they miss, and pick 13th, or 43rd in the 2nd. Now would you trade the 43rd and 96th pick for the 25th pick? That seems very similar to me.

It's all relative.

WGR just sent the text with the 4th going the wrong way.

GR is texting WE get a first and a fourth from Nashville for Goose, not that we are sending them a fourth.

This is wrong.

I just received a WGR text saying that the Sabres received a 1st and 4th round pick for Gaustad, award winning sports show ?

Kassian to the Canucks ?

Really? i mean yeah we got a first rounder.......but were obviously sellers. Goose was our best faceoff man and great on the powerplay as well as shutting down the oppenents best player. We are going to see just how much Goose meant to this team. Now who's going to stand up and fight? Kaleta? kassian?

LOL Montreal is mad that preds gave a second-round pick for Kostityn and we got a first-round pick for Gaustad. They are wondering who's better Kostityn or Gaustad.

Fixed that for you.

I'm amazed we got that much. I still want Darcy fired but good job on the return.

Amazing job. Plenty of folks were essentially laughing at the idea of Darcy even ASKING for a 1st, let alone getting it - including me.

I was hoping for a few more moves, but that's some pretty good scratch for a free agent.

But but but... we're supposed to be rebuilding. You can't go giving up a 4th round draft pick! :P

Sign him back at the end of the year

You are far from the only one saying this, but I think there is zero possibility of this happening. Someone is going to give Gaustad far more than he's worth, and it's not going to be DR.

But the pick is in the 2013 draft - so that is more like a 5th round pick after the Sabres win the Cup next season. ;)

Did it wind up being a 2013 pick? They're going to have quite a bit of ammo this summer.

Details from DR's mouth:

Nashville's 2012 1st round pick.

Buffalo's 2013 4th round pick.

Nashville was not the first team to offer a 1st round pick for Goose, but that first team waffled a lot since late last night, then withdrew the offer this afternoon.

Admiration for Goose as a professional and a person. Thanked Goose for contributions to team and community.

Sounds like Detroit to me.

We get a #1 pick for 20 games of Paul Gaustad (and a very marginal #4). We were either going to sign him over the summer or not, but I don't think trade has any bearing whatsoever on whether Goose signs back with us or not. I don't think there is any way he holds any resentment to the Sabres. if he wants to return and the team wants him, the price and the chance is going to be the same (unless he is a star of the playoffs with the Preds going to the Finals, which is unlikely). I actually think we have a 50-50 chance of re-signing him over the summer, before and after today.

Anyone think of any real reason why the trade makes it less likely we re-sign him?

Gaustad was a decent player. He will be missed for a week or 2.

Our PK will probably hurt, but I relish the chance it gives Kaleta to shine on that unit. And so let's see, Nashville's 1st could end up being as good as middle of the pack, or near #30, so as much as I wanna see them go far in the playoffs, as I hate almost every other team in the Western Conference besides Columbus, now I want nashville to crap the bed and give us a better pick. :)
