LaFontaineToMogilny Posted February 24, 2012 Report Posted February 24, 2012 What about Brown, Penner and a #1 for Pommer and Stafford? That would leave the Sabres with: - Brown -- 27, 6'1, 203 lbs, team captain, tough player, consistent hitter, averaged 27 goals per year for past 4 years, under contract for next 2 seasons after this one for $3.175MM per year - #1 pick that would likely be in the mid-teens - net gain of $6.2MM in cap space (assuming they let Penner walk in the summer) -- almost enough for Parise - getting rid of 2 letter-wearers from the current failed "leadership group." I would do it. That would work if The Kings had a 1st round pick.
nfreeman Posted February 24, 2012 Report Posted February 24, 2012 That would work if The Kings had a 1st round pick. I think the Kings keep their 1st-rounder this year if they miss the playoffs (with CBS then getting the Kings' first-rounder in 2013).
carpandean Posted February 24, 2012 Report Posted February 24, 2012 I think the Kings keep their 1st-rounder this year if they miss the playoffs (with CBS then getting the Kings' first-rounder in 2013). Couldn't we, then, get a conditional 1st-rounder: 2013 if they make the playoffs this year; 2012 if they don't?

They do, but they can't trade the pick again until it's decided which pick they'll have to send to Columbus right? I might be off here on the technicalities, but I don't think the Kings can trade a 1st round pick this year. I guess it could technically be Pominville and Stafford for the Dustins and a conditional 1st or 2nd pick (that flips the other way than the Columbus pick). That leaves the Kings with no 1st round picks in 2012 or 2013 and Lombardi's head on a stake outside the Staple Center

Basically, whichever pick Columbus doesn't get.

I would do it. As already mentioned, I think the #1 pick is going to be an issue due to their earlier trade. And I don't know that I want a pick that is 2 years out. I wouldn't hate this deal otherwise but I'm not feeling great about it either. I'd rather talk something more immediate like a prospect given the pick situation. Edit- to clarify my thought, it is just to difficult to judge what value a pick that is two drafts out might have.

Jason Pominville is worth Brown and a 1st/2nd rnd pick all by his lonesome... -Captain -Great in shootouts -Great 2-way player -Can play in any situation -Can take Draws -Averages 65pts a season and 23-25 goals -Never a liability The only downside to pommers is his lack of physical play which has no real impact on his in game performance. Penner is an undrafted player who has had 1 season above 50pts... Id rather keep stafford if thats what I get. We seem to have all agreed that players are better than picks. Stafford for penner is a salary dump on our part if thats all we get in return. I think I discussed this yesterday but I was told Brown wasn't on the market... Stafford and something (Prospect/Pick/NHL ready d-man) for Brown is a fair deal but one that might not ever happen

Stafford and something (Prospect/Pick/NHL ready d-man) for Brown is a fair deal but one that might not ever happen The Kings' #1 pick situation was discussed pretty thoroughly already. I don't disagree that Pommer for Brown plus a 2nd is fair. My thought was to take the opportunity to unload Stafford and get a #1 draft pick or an equivalent prospect in the deal. As previously stated, there is NFW that Stafford plus Sekera gets you Brown, who is the subject of a bidding war right now. You will have to include McNabb or Kassian, and that probably wouldn't do it either.
LaFontaineToMogilny Posted February 24, 2012 Report Posted February 24, 2012 I think if Carter and (presumably) Pommer and Stafford perform well, their fans won't mind having parted with the draft picks. I think the fans are already quite nervous about how the Kings are positioned in upcoming drafts. Right now they are looking at no pick in the 2nd or 3rd round of the 2012 draft (which by most accounts looks to be pretty deep), if they make the playoffs they don't pick until the 4th round this year. If they trade away another 1st their next draft pick is 2nd round 2013 no matter what happens the rest of this year. Not to mention that the Kings are also trying to clear cap room for resigning Quick. Taking on Pominville's contract while gutting themselves even further in the draft doesn't make too much sense for them.
LabattBlue Posted February 24, 2012 Report Posted February 24, 2012 LA just picked up Carter. Maybe Stoll comes back as a rental and then we work on resigning? I'd include Stoll in a trade, and then re-sign him at 3.5 as my 3rd line center any day of the week instead of paying Gooseshit 2.5-3.0 to fill the same role. Stoll isn't a fighter, but he is a very good face-off guy, plays physical, and actually has some offensive ability...even though he is having a horrible season like many of the Kings. As I said, 'the street'. I heard it from someone who follows the Kings much closer than myself, so take it for what it's worth. Also, Toronto is also serious about Brown as per the same street. Whenever I talk to the street, someone shows up with a straight jacket. Be careful who you talk to.

My guess is that talking to the street is a lot more common in Los Angeles then in Western New York :P Whenever I talk to the street I fit right in.
TrueBlueGED Posted February 24, 2012 Report Posted February 24, 2012 On the hypothetical situation that we actually traded Pominville and Stafford+ for Brown and Bernier...we'd have to have a second trade lined up to flip Bernier right? Any chance we could pry Schenn away from Philly for Bernier? At the end of the day, if I could flip Pominville and Stafford into Brown and Schenn I do that instantly. I'd even include Sekera/Brennan/Pysyk or whatever of similar value.

TrueBlueGED Posted February 24, 2012 Report Posted February 24, 2012 ...or maybe flip Miller! I had thought about that too, but I was working under the assumption that Bernier would be much easier to move, and might even have more value given the contract and age.
RayFinkle Posted February 24, 2012 Report Posted February 24, 2012 Huh? LA is making a run so they are going to trade their captain for a guy who gives them less of everything? Brown isn't exactly lighting it up this year. Word on the street is there is an internal power struggle between Brown and Richards. Now that Carter is in town, Brown is on the outs. Stafford, sekera and throw in a pick. Done deal.

They were close to trading him a few weeks ago and Millers been solid enough lately to maybe get them to bite? Catch is Miller has the No Trade Clause, right? Anyway, nothing but idle speculation either way
spndnchz Posted February 24, 2012 Report Posted February 24, 2012 Kings GM says Brown was never in play.
TrueBlueGED Posted February 24, 2012 Report Posted February 24, 2012 Kings GM says Brown was never in play. Seems to me he was in play, but they wanted it quiet and when it exploded publicly they had to backtrack and say he was never available. It's never a good thing to be known to actively shop your captain, then turn around and not move him. Bob McKenzie has noted that if Brown is off the table, he can assure everybody that he was available at one point. He's one of the few that when he reports something, I believe it. He doesn't just fling poop at a wall to see what sticks.
