shrader Posted February 24, 2012 Report Posted February 24, 2012 Drew is the SAME player as Horton - in fact Drew may be more skilled - he just doesn't give a sh!t. They're similar, but Horton was always a higher end talent. He went 3rd overall in a much stronger draft class.
apuszczalowski Posted February 24, 2012 Report Posted February 24, 2012 Drew is the SAME player as Horton - in fact Drew may be more skilled - he just doesn't give a sh!t. I think Horton is a more physical player, but I think offensively, They are the same or pretty close. Some players just need a change of scenery, and Buffalo has plenty of those kind of players that other teams would look at trying to obtain because they may be the ones to get them going with that change of scenery. Its how guys like Boyes, Bernier, and the majority of Darcys other great deadline deals end up happening and those players continue to play in the league. Taking back Penner would almost be a must in this deal I think and it could really help the Sabres making the way to the top of the group in this situation because they could agree to taking him off their hands in a deal.
Lanny Posted February 24, 2012 Report Posted February 24, 2012 It is a salary move, they want to clear space for when Quicks contract is up and he needs to be re-signed. Thats why I'm not sure if they would want Stafford now, is Brown making that much more to make it still a Salary dump picking up Stafford plus? If they are looking to take back little salary, I wonder if McNabb and Boyes would be a good deal for Brown? No, Stafford's cap hit is more than Brown and depending on the "plus" that may put them over the cap. Penner could be involved as a salary dump to make numbers work for this year, not sure going forward.

And if we give Penner enough pancakes, insurance will pick up the last portion of his contract and he'll quickly be on his way somehwere else. No harm done.

LA has enough cap space (about $2.5M) to do Brown for Stafford even up but we all know that isn't going to get it done. If it is Stafford that moves there will likely have to be a rostered player moving with him. Which means LA now needs to move more salary. Yeah, I think we'd have to take Penner for the remainder of the season.

No harm done. Penner is on the last year of his contract - this is just short term cap relief for the kings to load up for a playoff run. Wouldn't necessarily be required for them to take on whatever we send, but may allow them to make another deal. Cap relief is worth it's weight in gold. Bmwolf21 Posted February 24, 2012 Report Posted February 24, 2012 I know. I just think we should give him more pancakes. Is that too much to ask for? It's win-win. More Pancakes = Penner on LTIR = cap relief.
nfreeman Posted February 24, 2012 Report Posted February 24, 2012 Someone is going to offer LA substantially more than Stafford. The Sabres would need to include a #1 or a high-end prospect like McNabb or Pysyck.
TrueBlueGED Posted February 24, 2012 Report Posted February 24, 2012 I'd think Sekera would slot in really nicely as part of this deal, but I can't imagine they want to take back more salary than they shed, so Sekera +anything will be more pricey than Brown. Brennan and Kassian? I dunno. I like Brown a lot, but I think this is a clear case of LA taking advantage of a seller's market to try and get more than he's worth. If they're asking for 2 high end prospects and a pick, that's almost what Columbus is asking for Nash, which is silly. Brown isn't Nash.

BuffaloSoldier2010 Posted February 24, 2012 Report Posted February 24, 2012 I could see a trade involving semin and brown. No rumors or anything on this, just a deal that makes sense to me. Id love brown, but I doubt darcy pulls it off.

LA seems very motivated to get into the playoffs now so I suspect the only salary issues are cap related. I feel pretty confident that they would be amable towards a multi rostered player deal as long as Penner is moving out. Penner is def in their doghouse and was publicly called out by the coach very recently.
thewookie1 Posted February 24, 2012 Report Posted February 24, 2012 Stafford & Sekera/Leopold + 2nd rounder for Penner & Brown Boyes would need to be traded for a pick beforehand We take the cap hit of Penner for the LAK and they get a potential 40 goal scorer and a puck moving defensemen We get Dustin Brown for a year + (extend contract while he's having ok season) and Dustin Penner who I would negotiate his contract down to a more managable rate and resign. He's been injured so we could get him for a steal in contract wages. Plus he before his injuries was 20+ goal scorer and he has won a cup. I meant give Brown and extension and attempt to sign Penner for a short low priced contract.

LaFontaineToMogilny Posted February 24, 2012 Report Posted February 24, 2012 Word on the street is that the Kings and Sabres are talking right now. Discussions including Brown and Penner for Pominville and Stafford, also in the mix Gaustad and Stafford and the Kings might also consider packaging Bernier instead of Penner with Brown in a deal

LaFontaineToMogilny Posted February 24, 2012 Report Posted February 24, 2012 Source? As I said, 'the street'. I heard it from someone who follows the Kings much closer than myself, so take it for what it's worth. Also, Toronto is also serious about Brown as per the same street.
nfreeman Posted February 24, 2012 Report Posted February 24, 2012 McNabb makes sense. He's looked good for us this year and fits the style of player LA likes on defense. I don't think the Sabres will trade McNabb, but it's possible. DR did, once upon a time, trade a good young defenseman in Cory Sarich for a guy he thought would make a difference for the Sabres at forward. Of course, that forward was Chris Gratton...

Weave Posted February 24, 2012 Report Posted February 24, 2012 Brown and Penner for Pommer and Stafford is not a good deal IMO. Overpayment. Sub Bernier and same result.
LaFontaineToMogilny Posted February 24, 2012 Report Posted February 24, 2012 Brown and Penner for Pommer and Stafford is not a good deal IMO. Overpayment. Sub Bernier and same result. Definitely, especially considering what the Kings gave for Jeff Carter. Stafford and Gaustad for Brown and Penner though, that's a deal I make, even if the Kings need a 2nd round pick added to pull the trigger
nfreeman Posted February 24, 2012 Report Posted February 24, 2012 Brown and Penner for Pommer and Stafford is not a good deal IMO. Overpayment. Sub Bernier and same result. What about Brown, Penner and a #1 for Pommer and Stafford? That would leave the Sabres with: - Brown -- 27, 6'1, 203 lbs, team captain, tough player, consistent hitter, averaged 27 goals per year for past 4 years, under contract for next 2 seasons after this one for $3.175MM per year - #1 pick that would likely be in the mid-teens - net gain of $6.2MM in cap space (assuming they let Penner walk in the summer) -- almost enough for Parise - getting rid of 2 letter-wearers from the current failed "leadership group." I would do it.
