Eleven Posted February 11, 2012 Report Posted February 11, 2012 And TRY to answer without google... Entering the 2011-2012 season, the Montreal Canadiens are the winningest franchise in NHL history, with a .590 percentage. Who are second and third? EDIT: Winning as a percentage, not total wins. Otherwise, it would have to be the 80-100-year old franchises.
Eleven Posted February 11, 2012 Author Report Posted February 11, 2012 Philly and Boston. You got Philly right.
NowDoYouBelieve Posted February 11, 2012 Report Posted February 11, 2012 Bold guess...Philly and yooooouuur Buffalo Sabres??
Eleven Posted February 11, 2012 Author Report Posted February 11, 2012 Bold guess...Philly and yooooouuur Buffalo Sabres?? Yep. With Boston behind by a tenth of one percent. I was STUNNED to learn that earlier in the week and had to wait until the weekend to confirm by looking it up in the official NHL Guide. But yeah, it's the third-winningest team in NHL history. I would have figured somewhere in the middle of the pack. Now, the Buffalo Bills, on the other hand...

Eleven Posted February 11, 2012 Author Report Posted February 11, 2012 Do you have a link? It's a book. But what got me started was this quiz from Wednesday: http://www.sporcle.com/games/puckett86/best-team I was really surprised by it, and given the somewhat inherent unreliability of sporcle quizzes, I wanted to check it before posting anything about it. I would suspect that at present, Boston has overtaken Buffalo given the extremely slim margin between the two teams heading into the season.

I would like to see the numbers, I am surprised I am not able to see them online anywhere. This is interesting, from a article Sept 2010 Teams that have more “Goals For” than “Goals Against” in their history. Montreal Canadiens +3,520 Boston Bruins +1,532 Philadelphia Flyers +1,445 Buffalo Sabres +989 Detroit Red Wings +850 Calgary Flames +532 Edmonton Oilers +448 Colorado Avalanche +220 New York Islanders +203

EDIT: You can take the quiz and "give up" about 20 seconds in to see the numbers there. Or you can take this much sadder quiz: http://www.sporcle.com/games/TheBigE1980/winningest_teams_to_never_win_a_title

I'm going to go with San Jose (pretty confident with this one) and... Dallas? Edit: .......oops! Edit again: I was trying to find the answer via google just now and found this sporcle quiz, which gets you the results for the top seven nhl teams... http://www.sporcle.com/games/nrs/winningest They've got Boston ahead of Buffalo, by the way!
Ghost of Dwight Drane Posted May 29, 2012 Report Posted May 29, 2012 Fun little trivia fact I came across just now...... Name the former Buffalo Sabre who had an on-ice fight with both Lindy Ruff AND Darcy Regier...............

Ghost of Dwight Drane Posted May 29, 2012 Report Posted May 29, 2012 I found it. But I had to cheat. I had no idea and don't expect anyone to off hand. Darcy had 3 career fights and he probably doesn't know. I was surprised to see Darcy had a few tussles

shrader Posted May 30, 2012 Report Posted May 30, 2012 Fun little trivia fact I came across just now...... Name the former Buffalo Sabre who had an on-ice fight with both Lindy Ruff AND Darcy Regier............... How exactly did you come across this one? That takes randomness to a whole new level.
Ghost of Dwight Drane Posted May 30, 2012 Report Posted May 30, 2012 How exactly did you come across this one? That takes randomness to a whole new level. The answer is: Pat Hughes I'll tell you how. With watching the playoffs and all the grit and size going on, and some of our longstanding observations that the Sabres lack both and Darcy has no clue........I wondered if Darcy was a total puss as a player. I looked up his stats and was surprised to see he had a few years in the minors with 100 penalty minutes. There had to be some fights sprinkled in there to get that many. Since he only played a few dozen games in the NHL, I was assuming he never had to fight....but was shocked to see he had 3 fights in the NHL. Not bad. So my next step was to see who he fought.....I couldn't find any video footage, but found the names. I wanted to know if it was a Daniel Briere/ Kyle Turris type of partner, or guys who actually had some toughness. Pat Hughes came up and he was ok in a tussle. I looked up who he had fought over the years and he took on some heavyweights, and that is where I saw he fought Lindy Ruff. I figured that was interesting enough information to relay here given the lack of actual activity. So you see......it wasn't random. I had an idea, and a hypothesis....and I researched it.....and there was enough information to strike down my thought that Darcy was a puss on the ice as well, and in researching found some other interesting information. The less I know about something that peaks my curiosity, the deeper I dig. If something doesn't make sense....there's usually a reason. You don't always find definitive answers along the way, but you close some doors, and open others. I guess, pretty much like your job.....except I'm not trying to cure terminal illness....just terminal ignorance. So there's a look into my thought process. Sorry to disappoint anyone who thought I just didn't have good enough insuarance to cover my psych meds.
