Thoughts on Pominville's captaincy

The past two weeks or so I have been quietly basking in the glow of my own self-admiration for sort of standing up for Drew Stafford when the board was ready to ship him off to Guantanamo Bay.

So, in all fairness, I feel I should revisit this thread where I've questioned Pominville's abilities as captain. My argument was that he was not vocal and intense enough in the locker room to force the team out of the monster-slump they were going through. I must admit that despite the unbelievable turnaround the team has had, I've continued to suspect that Pominville is not strong captain material.

I think I completely changed my mind last night. First I read how Tropp was swooning over Pominville's work ethic and dedication, and how he is becoming a more vocal presence in the locker room. Then he lead his team to a MASSIVE road victory, he embarrassed the 'face of the NHL' and has his team drive home a message to the rest of the league. The highlight however was the post game interview he gave to NHL tonight. I pretty much became the second biggest Pominville fan in the world right there and then.

To see him nonchalantly leaned up against the boards while basically pissing all over the Capitals was fantastic! "We wanted to take away their will" says Pominville in the most matter of fact manner possible! Right after his team has just gone into Washington and destroyed them! In the biggest game of the year for both teams! All the while just standing there as cool as can be looking like he's ready to kick anyone's ass and not give a seconds thought about it!

What a captain!

You're forgiven.

Would you happen to have a link for the interview? I'd like to see it.

Edit: never mind. It's here: http://video.nhl.com/videocenter/console?catid=3

When Pom's leading the team in points, and is the best forward on the PK, it would take a cynical player not to look at him as a leader. He is just now earning and learning how to lead, though. You are right, that he has been a wallflower before. I think his words will carry more weight, now, than they would have before.

I suspect that the part I bolded is part of the key to the teams' turnaround. There does seem to be some leadership starting to show, and although Pominville is showing that he is the biggest leader there are others starting to assert themselves as well.

Well, this is optimistic/hopeful, but I will say that there are signs that it could be right. Pommer sure said the right things in that interview last night, and he sounded more like a leader than he has previously. Myers has also displayed some of this lately.

But winning colors everything.

The question would be has the sub-leadership started to show because of Pominville's leadership or because of the individual itself.

I haven't heard his interview after games since the AS break, maybe he was picking up his rhetoric prior to last night, but this was the 1st time I heard him interviewed and he SOUNDED like the captain of the team.

He sets a good example for the players on the ice with his work ethic but I hadn't been particularily impressed with what he had to say and was looking forward to someone else taking the 'C' from him. Perhaps there's something to this thought that he's growing into the role. Perreault never grew into the captain that we'd hoped he'd be; and because of that I've been hesitant to support the (seemingly) quiet lead by example guys for the 'C.' Here's to hoping Jason continues growing into this role.

I think its possible it took this long for Pommers to either a) assert himself or b) earn the respect of his fellows... It seems that there have been several closed doors meetings this season and they seemed to have continued even during this streak. I think Pommers has taken charge and that has allowed the sub-leadership to manifest.

I doubt people did not respect him, so i presume the answer would be growing into the role.

I think it depends on the team/person, Drury was a quiet captain and Briere was the voice, maybe he needs a vocal assistant. I think that winning a few games has given them confidence that they have not had all season. There were some games when they did everything and the puck would hit the post or stop on the line etc.

idk man im still not sold on pom as capt but you cant argue with results so you gotta give it to him for getting them back this miraculously far

kinda like the economy and the sitting president - its not clear whether they can have much direct impact but if its good while they are there you gotta give em credit anyway
