Robviously Posted February 22, 2012 Report Posted February 22, 2012 Seeing as Kyle Quincey was moved for a 1st, I'd think Leopold could get a similar return. Could have flipped the return on Leopold for Vermette, and brought McNabb back to take Leopold's spot. Does anyone expect McNabb to spend next year in the AHL? I certainly don't, so might as well free up his roster spot now. Definitely not. Plus, I'd love to know what the plan is for T.J. Brennan. He's probably ready to move up to the NHL next year and we'll be adding Mark Pysyk and Jerome Gauthier-Leduc to the Amerks soon anyway. The Sabres have every reason to start unloading guys for draft picks right now. And if we decide we don't want those draft picks, we could always trade them in the summer if we have a chance to land an NHL player we want. I just wish we had someone in charge with an actual plan.
JJFIVEOH Posted February 22, 2012 Report Posted February 22, 2012 I don't see Leopold going anywhere. McNabb will be full time next year if not called up again sometime this year. What I do see is MAG going before the deadline. He's been a healthy scratch for quite some time now and can't get sent back down without having to clear waivers. The fact that he hasn't been sent down tells me DR thinks he has some value.
Who Else? Posted February 22, 2012 Report Posted February 22, 2012 Since December 17th, 24 of the 30 teams in the NHL made some sort of trade. The six teams who haven't are: Vancouver Pittsburgh NY Isles St Louis Los Angeles Buffalo
RazielSabre Posted February 22, 2012 Report Posted February 22, 2012 We need to be sellers, there are so many buyers out there looking to make a run and we have some useful rental players as well as some good pieces to trade. Get some picks or useful guys for next season, centers and depth. Whats the general consensus now? Happy with the official line of 'if we can get some points together we can make it' or would you guys prefer for us to sell? Or maybe we'll stay static. What does everyone think?
Weave Posted February 22, 2012 Report Posted February 22, 2012 I touched on this in the deadline thread, but discussing it here is probably the more appropriate place. I know it was mentioned that there is enough dead weight on this team to be sellers and still make a run for the 8 seed. Well, I think Regier just missed a huge opportunity. Vermette was just moved for a 2nd, 5th, and a mediocre-at-best goaltending prospect. Seeing as Kyle Quincey was moved for a 1st, I'd think Leopold could get a similar return. Could have flipped the return on Leopold for Vermette, and brought McNabb back to take Leopold's spot. Does anyone expect McNabb to spend next year in the AHL? I certainly don't, so might as well free up his roster spot now. I think this kind of a move would have made us better right now and for next year, especially if we trade Gaustad or lose him as a UFA. It's the kind of move that can help retool the team in the positive way. Roy (or his replacement) - Ennis - Vermette - Gaustad looks like a significantly better center lineup to me than what we currently have. You and me. We're on the same page. First thing I thought when I heard about that trade was, with our dirth of centers why were we not in on that deal?
bunomatic Posted February 23, 2012 Report Posted February 23, 2012 Its a sellers market and darcy will sit on his hands till they're numb then jack so it feels like its someone else. Just waiting for the market to set itself. What a load of crap. The fact that after 15 years anyone defends this guy confounds me. He's done some good but he hasn't won the cup in 15 years. 15 friggin years.
nobody Posted February 23, 2012 Report Posted February 23, 2012 Since we now know that Darcy is working on a contract extension for Gaustad; that would mean that Darcy thinks he is a buyer. Since it is a sellers market there is nothing Darcy can do.

LastPommerFan Posted February 23, 2012 Report Posted February 23, 2012 Contract extension for Gaustad, WTF  I don't get it....at all. If you can get goose cheap you keep him, otherwise you trade. This is why you negotiate now.
LabattBlue Posted February 23, 2012 Report Posted February 23, 2012 If you can get goose cheap you keep him, otherwise you trade. This is why you negotiate now. Define cheap? IMO...He is worth about 1.75-2.00 mil tops. You think they can sign him for that number? Just because he finally decides to start playing as his contract year approaches doesn't mean ###### to me. Tell me how much you liked Gaustad's play prior to the last few weeks. Trade him ASAP, before all the buyers make their deadline moves.

I expect at least 1st round pick and an expiring contract in return.

RazielSabre Posted February 23, 2012 Report Posted February 23, 2012 If you can get goose cheap you keep him, otherwise you trade. This is why you negotiate now. Or trade him and get him later. I'd take that risk.
LastPommerFan Posted February 23, 2012 Report Posted February 23, 2012 I would not expect to get a #1 for Gaustad. To be fair, we're talking about a 20-30 pick. But you're right, that may be steep. But that's where I'd start for sure.
RazielSabre Posted February 23, 2012 Report Posted February 23, 2012 I would not expect to get a #1 for Gaustad. But don't be surprised if someone overpays for one of the best defensive centers available. But Regier and Ruff are making it clear we're not sellers, otherwise we'd be set for next season/the draft.
carpandean Posted February 23, 2012 Report Posted February 23, 2012 Ted Black said on WGR this morning (and I'm paraphrasing) "the good news is that, unlike other teams, we are not under any financial mandate to make the playoffs to hit some bottom line. That pressure sometimes forces teams to try to hard to just squeak into the playoffs. We can focus on the long-term goal of winning the Cup." Sounds like the organization is at least open to, if not set on, a seller strategy. Of course, he also said that Darcy does his job, "the manager manages," so who knows what will happen.

You are saying the doom and gloom and Darcy won't make any moves because he thinks we can get into the playoffs and make a run BS might not be true? Let me show you my surprised face. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HqVBKO_QM3o

That sounds to me as though DR will continue to overvalue his players and therefore nothing will be accomplished at the deadline.

The best indicator of present / future behavior is past behavior. Therefore, we all know what is going to happen. I have resigned myself to that fact and would be extremely shocked if anything substantial were to happen on, or before, 3:00 PM EST on Monday, February 27, 2012.
