If you haven't watched either of these guys over their careers and then watched them this year in games (not practice not warm-ups), could you make the argument Leino over Ellis? I think without the previous seasons or lack of contract info, people would be calling for Leino to go to the minors not Ellis.

Two words SHOW IT. Leino has not shown it this year like he did in Detroit or Philly.

Leino has 13 points, Ellis has 6. Leino's shooting percentage is 9.3, Ellis' is 4.7. If Ellis tried a toe drag, I think he would fall over sideways and crash into the boards. Clearly, Leino has at least twice the talent of Ellis :P

Seriously though, if you can't see the talent level difference while watching the games, nothing any of us say is going to convince you otherwise. In no way am I saying Leino has been great this year, but his passing ability and shot are just on a different level than Ellis is capable of...and that's how it should be.

That's the point, you can make the argument he's better this year alone. PHD mentioned the toe drag goal, have you ever seen Ellis do anything like that?

This is the only year that matters. It's the only year Leino has been a Sabre. I know he has more skill he just hasn't done anything with it as a Sabre.

The points can be explained away with the comparison of quality of linemates, even TOI and games played.

I'm just typing in circles now, I'm Out Go Ellis.

You draw your opinions about players from warm-ups? You must have thought Craig Ramsey really sucked! Obviously, if you're too young to have attended a Sabre game in that era, you have no idea what I mean. Matt Ellis is a solid 5th to 6th line forward on a serious cup contender. That is our sole reason for existence, right? So, until the Ellis's of the league aren't part our team we are a sham when it comes to our sole reason for existence.

So, if this is the only year that matters in evaluating them, which other 10 Sabres do you want to send to the minors?

The most disgusting fanbase in North American sports is well out of eyes to be blackened. You're looking at penetration. And, being Filly, you'll probably love it.

You do realize the media blows a lot of it out of proportion because it is Philly right?

Did you hear about the fan that tackled the Lightning mascot?

How about the LA Dodgers fan beating?

Vancouver riots?

I can go on and on.

That's absurd. Players have off years for all kinds of reasons. I have a feeling you'll be eating your words in the next two month or at most next October.

Don't try talking sense with some of these clowns. The idea that it might take a while for a player to settle in on a team where he can't build chemistry with linemates because they're always injured doesn't fit into their complaint template.

Apparently Leino and Cody almost fought in practice today for a percieved slash. I guess the guy has a pulse and it would appear his fight or flight response is working properly as no fists were thrown so that could be a sign of good things yet out of him.

One incident per city vs. a lifetime's worth of reputation building incidents. Most fanbases can't add up to the pure numbers that have been reported from Philly over the years. And it's not just a media perception thing. I can't count the number of times I've watched a game in Philly where injured players are booed. Yeah, it probably happens in other places, but it's frequent in Philly.

And as for that Lightning thing, we should remember that the fan in question was actually a fan of another northeast fanbase that has gained quite the reputation of its own for scumbaggery (I love using that word, whether it's real or not).

I hope so. I really like the guy I know it is hard to tell right now.

What did Leino show in Detroit?

He was caught in a good situation in Philly. Like Brad Boyes in St. Louis for a couple of years. Warren Young in Pittsburgh in the early '80's. Gary Leeman in Toronto. Those players had far more offensive success than Leino in his 15 minutes of fame.

The idea that Leino is settling in is becoming the new popular myth among fans. Leino is settling in, he is showing the level of player he is, as Stafford has this season.

This is exactly what I'm talking about.

First, do you know when the "snowball" incident happened? 43 years ago. And it's still brought up today.

In fact, here's a quote from the guy who played Santa on the frightful day:

"Philadelphia sports fans have the reputation of being the worst in the country," Olivo said, "and it's bull. Because the Philadelphia sports fan, regardless of whether the team is good or bad, they will fill these stadiums, they'll put their money out to go to these games, they'll support the team.

"They're smart fans. They live and die with their teams. I do." "My 15 minutes of fame lasted 43 years, you know?"

Don't try talking sense with some of these clowns. The idea that it might take a while for a player to settle in on a team where he can't build chemistry with linemates because they're always injured doesn't fit into their complaint template.

I can understand their frustration. Hopefully rational thoughts prevail.

I like Leino but in general everyone this season has been a write-off, him included. Other than Ehrhoff proving to be a key, reliable, top 2 Dman for us (imho) I'm not forming opinions on any of them yet thanks to the aforementioned dreadful season.

Looks like Leino has relaxed, settled down, and is forgetting about the stigma (and pressure) that being a high-priced, high-profile FA often brings. Especially in a fishbowl hockey town like Buffalo. I think his comment about knowing where his linemates will be speaks volumes in terms of comfort level.

GO SABRES!!!

Interested to know why. Ellis can hang on to the puck against the boards with the best of the players who do that sort of thing. It's his one true hockey skill. In doing so, he also can drag it to the net once in a while.

He's also a monster, build-wise, and extremely humble and generally optimistic.

I'd say the latter qualities make him more desirable in the locker room than the quitter-mentality Leino displayed early in the season.

Only very recently has Leino shown any above-journeyman level skill.

This again?

I know I have a few dangling posts in this thread regarding if Leino is more skilled than an average AHL player or not, but I don't know what more I can say in that regard. Rather, I'll restate my stand on Leino and where I think he'd be most useful for us.

I would love to see Leino play with Pominville and Vanek. Yes, that means moving Pominville to the middle. I think Leino could be a great set up guy for Vanek, assuming Vanek returns with his great instinct for going to the net intact. Leino's been bringing the puck in deep just to pull up and pass through the slot all year long. Last game it really paid off when the captain figured out to go to the net. I think keeping those two together when Vanek comes back could potentially be very entertaining.

It really is only when someone comes in as a fan from another team that everyone here shows just how close minded they really are. Just read this thread fully and it's just pathetic. Philly fans have a bad reputation (not totally unwarranted) but every team has it's fans and it's largely due to the city and culture in that area.

Apart from anything else, what use is it wailing on 1 Flyers fan who chose to ask a question on this board.
