The Internet. Yeah, we tend to take it for granted, but it sure can be a boon when you really need to find something and don't feel like running around town searching. Last night, I did a stupid thing - after checking the rinse agent level in my dishwasher, I replaced the cap...but didn't twist it to lock it. Sure enough, when the dishwasher hit the "dry" cycle, the smell of melting plastic alerted me to the fact that the cap had fallen to the bottom of the machine, right onto the heating coil. It is half-melted (and actually a bit charred). Obviously, it no longer seals. A quick web search this morning allowed me to find the part and it has already been ordered. Yeah, it's going to cost almost $20 (including shipping), but it will come right to my mailbox. Imagine running around from appliance store to appliance store asking if they had the part, if they could get the part, etc. etc. (In fact, even if you wanted to do that, where would you find a list of appliance stores outside of the old-fashioned Yellow Pages? Yep, Internet.)

On the down side, I went to a "big box electronics retailer" last Friday in hopes of checking out a new camcorder. Apparently, this store no longer displays any cameras or camcorders in the store. Oh, you can still get one at the store IF you order it online and specify 'store pickup'. But, the items are all in their "warehouse" area. Unless you buy first, you don't see 'em anymore in the store. Apparently, this is designed to cut down on "showrooming". I guess if I really needed the device immediately, I would go this route but in fact I can get the item online at a smaller price AND with free shipping. So, this "big box" store just maneuvered themselves out of a sale. Oh well, modern business.....

It's kind of strange being at work knowing I'm getting married later this week. I think they're well aware that I won't be all that productive.

Awesome. Many years of happiness.

Where did you end up deciding to go on the honeymoon?

More importantly: on a scale of 1 to 10, how pornographic was the bachelor party?

New Orleans. It'll probably be a bit rough temperature-wise, but it should be a good time. The drinks will definitely be flowing.

No bachelor party yet. We're going to a Red Sox game on thursday. It'll be tame. I don't think anyone is all that interested in a crazy event.

New Orleans will be a great honeymoon. It's a great walking-around city with great food and music.

Well loogit you!

Congratulations. The only advice that I got that was worth a damn about my wedding day (some 15 years ago): Do everything you can to slow down, calm down, and appreciate the event. Oh, and be sure to eat and drink.

Well, eat and drink without being one of those annoying-ass couples that just acts like they're guests at a super-awesome party that was thrown for them and then at some point thereafter is all like "Sorrrreeee we didn't get around to see everyone at the reception. We just wanted to focus on having a good time on our special day."

There was a balance to be struck there, Tom and Tracy. The multiple trays of bacon-wrapped scallops will not excuse your rudeness.

Well, actually - bacon-wrapped scallops will excuse a rude bride and groom.

You get my point. I think.

Did I have one?

Congrats.

And Go BC.

We miss some sort of jazz festival by one day, which is unfortunate.

There is pretty much some sort of festival going on year round, so you'll still be able to catch something cool.

In addition to the normal tourist traps down there, I'd recommend hitting the Louisiana School of Cooking (they have cooking classes there, and even if you don't feel up to that, there is a great spice / sauce store as a part of it) and Copeland's (a nice Cajun restaurant over near St. Charles owned by the guy that started Popeyes) which gives a chance to get away from the French Quarter for a bit.

While you're down there down an Abita Amber (or 2 or 3), or maybe a Turbo Dog.

Congrats on the wedding. Hope the day goes as planned and your F-i-L to be has a great time.

Also, a reasonable walk from the Bourbon St scene is a great bar/restaurant called Lucy's Retired Surfers Paradise. Great Mexi-Cali food. And a self serve wine bar called The Wine Institute of New Orleans (WINO). And both of those are a short walk from the WWII Museum, which should be a must see for any New Orleans trip. Best WWII museum I've ever been in.

And the take out fried chicken from Brothers is best in class.

I wish I had asked for suggestions earlier. We are pretty much going to choose randomly when it comes to food. I've had a few suggestions from others that are on the list, but the rest of the days we will play it by eye. I'll keep these places in mind. We're staying in the French Quarter, so we should have easy access for most.

FWIW, I'm a much bigger fan of the muffaletta (not to be confused with a lottamuffa, but there you are) than of the po'boy, which I think is one of the world's most overrated sandwiches.

Muffaletta is maybe the best sandwich you can find. It's Cajun Guido. Also.....Café Du monde is a must. 3 beignets and a colonic coffee for like $4.......and I can't remember the oyster place I was at, but I was there for 5 hours with the GF and tipped the shucker at the bar $20 ahead of time, and we did like 10 dozen...which just happened to have 14-15 on a plate, plus he'd slip us casino et al from the stove. And yes...12 dozen oysters ended up at Larry Flint's Hustler at 1AM. It's true what they say.

And there it is, cafe dumonde. Every single person recommends it

Wasn't a fan personally but it is one of those must do things when in NO I guess. Hint- go mid day or after dinner. Otherwise you'll be dealing with an hour+ line for donuts and strong coffee.

Congrats. Having just done a reception, I'll offer a few (fairly standard) tips:

- Do make sure to eat whenever you can. If it works out logistically, task someone to send a small tray of appetizers to you. My father-in-law sent a tray up to our room during cocktail hour and it was a perfect way to bridge the gap until dinner. Also, if you're roaming around for pictures, pack a small bag with (much) water and snacks. If you want to be extra nice, pack a bag for your photographer(s). They're working the same hectic schedule as you, but they have even less chance to eat.

- Make an effort to eat dinner. It will be tough because people will yammer at you, but work as a team to keep people chatting while the other eats.

- Remember that as long as you're married at the end of the day, you're good. Everything else is gravy.

- Have fun. It's a blast.

My town isn't much to look at, for the most part. But thankfully we don't have a lot of graffiti. Someone did tag the light brown door of a small outbuilding with a goofy face or something in bright red spray paint. Someone took care it by painting the whole door bright red. I thought it was an awesome f-u to the "artist" and it actually looks great. Pretty smart, too, if you think about it.

Went to a new eye doctor today. His last name is Lehtonen. He's not sure if he's related to Kari or not (his dad came to US from Finland at age 4 and grandfather was in foster care in Finland, so family lines get unclear around there). He's a hockey player and to distract me while he put in eye drops, he told me Newfie jokes. My kinda doc.

Hopefully he's not related to Kari or else he probably misses a lot of work with injuries.

My thing that is awesome today: I finally sent in my last payment to HSBC for my old credit card. No more interest charges! It feels good to be almost caught up on bills. Next step: actually putting money into savings. :o

My regular doc is "Dr. Brian Boucher". :)
