inkman Posted January 25, 2012 Report Posted January 25, 2012 First, I'd like to apologize to Scott (SDS) for startin this thread but I feel it's easier to wade through the subterfuge on SS rather than TSW. I don't really have too much of an opinion on the Presidents speech other than Hilary could not have looked more crotchety if she tried. My biggest question is when did the "Republican Response" start? Has this been an annual thing during the Obama administration? Did the Dems do one during W's tenure? The whole process, including the State of te Union seems like placation to the masses.
SDS Posted January 25, 2012 Report Posted January 25, 2012 The opposition party has always had a response. and I think TSOTUA is a big waste of time. Two long campaign speeches. Nothing more.
Neo Posted January 25, 2012 Report Posted January 25, 2012 The response dates back to the start of televised speeches, debates, etc. Think Kennedy Nixon. Think mid sixties. Methinks.
DumbPuck Posted January 25, 2012 Report Posted January 25, 2012 I Tim Thomased this event. lol this might stick you know? I may even use it in everyday situations. It kinda rolls off the tongue.
SarasotaSabre Posted January 25, 2012 Report Posted January 25, 2012 some may say " I Tebowed", others may say "I Thomased"..... :worthy:
OverPowerYou Posted January 25, 2012 Report Posted January 25, 2012 The opposition party has always had a response. and I think TSOTUA is a big waste of time. Two long campaign speeches. Nothing more. Why is there always an acronym for everything? I mean, WITAAAFE?
... Posted January 25, 2012 Report Posted January 25, 2012 The opposition party has always had a response. and I think TSOTUA is a big waste of time. Two long campaign speeches. Nothing more. True and true. I TT'd this event, too. But, for what it's worth, TSOTUA is supposed to be just that, a summary of the "state of the Union". Sadly, it was co-opted ages ago. Probably by a democrat. :flirt:
nfreeman Posted January 25, 2012 Report Posted January 25, 2012 How many posts before this one goes off the rails?
... Posted January 25, 2012 Report Posted January 25, 2012 How many posts before this one goes off the rails? So far it's smooth and straight. I am keeping my thoughts to myself, though, except for the occasional smart-aleck reply. People around here simply can not DISCUSS politics.
SwampD Posted January 25, 2012 Report Posted January 25, 2012 So far it's smooth and straight. I am keeping my thoughts to myself, though, except for the occasional smart-aleck reply. People around here simply can not DISCUSS politics. Can anyone?
darksabre Posted January 25, 2012 Report Posted January 25, 2012 How many posts before this one goes off the rails? I think we'll be fine as long as the usual suspects don't come in here and start throwing chairs out the balcony door and pissing on the carpet. The problem with political discussions is that one thing always seems to get lost in the mix: we're all on the same side. Forget the things you've labeled yourself as, forget your allegiances and their rhetoric. Only then can discussion be had when minds are receptive. And most importantly, ask questions. Questions fuel discussion. Ranting endlessly is boring and self centered.
JohnRobertEichel Posted January 25, 2012 Report Posted January 25, 2012 Allow me to summarize this thread over the next few days: "Obama's a hedonistic socialist Muslim who wants to give lazy people a free ride!" "Republicans are middle-class killing religious bigots who only care about protecting the interests of the rich." "No they're not. ###### you." "Yes they are. Go eat a bag of ######, jackass." End thread.

TheMatrix31 Posted January 25, 2012 Report Posted January 25, 2012 If I were President, I'd say "I am doing away with State of the Union Night. It is nothing but a breeding ground for fake ######. I don't want to waste anyone's time, and the country is better off without it. Thank you."
bcsaberks Posted January 25, 2012 Report Posted January 25, 2012 If I were President, I'd say "I am doing away with State of the Union Night. It is nothing but a breeding ground for fake ######. I don't want to waste anyone's time, and the country is better off without it. Thank you." Or do it right with charts: Revenue vs expenses, debt / surplus. Unemployment rate GDP Inflation List of wars currently active, body count, cost, objectives defined / met Use powerpoint. 30 minutes, state of union, business style, out.
Weave Posted January 25, 2012 Report Posted January 25, 2012 and I think TSOTUA is a big waste of time. Two long campaign speeches. Nothing more. I agree with this 100%. And how can anyone listen to a speech that involves 30 seconds of oratory followed by 45 seconds of applause? lather, rinse, repeat. Ugh. Let the man talk so we can get on with our regularly scheduled programming. *Full Disclosure* I got tired enough of SOTU addresses that I stopped watching them altogether some time in the Clinton administration. I assume they still go the same way and have no desire to verify my belief. I think we'll be fine as long as the usual suspects don't come in here and start throwing chairs out the balcony door and pissing on the carpet. *reenacts scene from The Big Lebowsky*
Eleven Posted January 25, 2012 Report Posted January 25, 2012 If I were President, I'd say "I am doing away with State of the Union Night. It is nothing but a breeding ground for fake ######. I don't want to waste anyone's time, and the country is better off without it. Thank you." Can't. It's required per the Constitution. EDIT: I just realized for the first time that while the Constitution mandates the address, it doesn't say how often the President has to give it. So I guess there's your way out.
Claude_Verret Posted January 25, 2012 Report Posted January 25, 2012 The opposition party has always had a response. and I think TSOTUA is a big waste of time. Two long campaign speeches. Nothing more. Yes indeed.
nfreeman Posted January 25, 2012 Report Posted January 25, 2012 Wow. 11 hours and 19 posts in, and no name-calling? No hysterical conspiracy theories? No regurgitation of partisan talking points? No "you would agree with me if you weren't so much dumber than me?" What's become of us?

SwampD Posted January 25, 2012 Report Posted January 25, 2012 We've all devolved down to being equally dumb. And a little ugly on the side.
shrader Posted January 25, 2012 Report Posted January 25, 2012 Can't. It's required per the Constitution. "But if we changed the constitution, then we could make all sorts of crazy laws!"
Eleven Posted January 25, 2012 Report Posted January 25, 2012 "But if we changed the constitution, then we could make all sorts of crazy laws!" Now you're catching on.
frissonic Posted January 25, 2012 Report Posted January 25, 2012 i watched it. it was a lot of the same rhetoric from his 2004 DNC speech. "we are one!" "no divide is too great to bridge." "let's work together." "set aside partisan politics to get to the real issues at hand." "blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah." "words." "empty, shallow, meaningless, hollow words." i like president obama. as a person. i think he's charismatic and a great orator. he did get one thing right in his speech: "washington is broken." i don't think i've ever heard a president announce that from the stand during ANY speech, much less during a SOTU speech. as a president, i think he's about as common and run of the mill as they come. say one thing, do the complete opposite. thanks for getting bin laden. that was pretty cool. other than that, meh.
