Sabres Fan in NS Posted January 18, 2012 Report Posted January 18, 2012 Me! Sorry, but no one would understand a word you say ... we don't speak the King's english here in North America.
FolignosJock Posted January 18, 2012 Report Posted January 18, 2012 I just taught my GF from Virginia hockey and she has been to one live sabres game, I think she has sylvesters credentials
carpandean Posted January 18, 2012 Report Posted January 18, 2012 I don't mind Sylvester at all, in fact, if forced to listen to the radio, prefer him to RJ. Thank you. I can't begin to express how much I disagree with this. While some of the reason for liking RJ is based on nostalgia and familiarity, he'd still be far ahead of Sylvester in my eyes (or ears, in this case) with those factors set aside. Not so much because RJ without those would be so great, but because Kevin sounds so amateurish. His voice isn't terrible, but his call sounds so unnatural when something happens. RJ will go, probably sooner than later, but I have to believe that a professional sports team could do better than Kevin for their play-by-play. Keep him in his old role, and bring in someone with a background in calling games.
MattPie Posted January 18, 2012 Report Posted January 18, 2012 Me! Sorry, but no one would understand a word you say ... we don't speak the King's english here in North America. "Blimey, that septic Ryan Miller just made a cracking save! He's just been the dogs ###### tonight!" "Vanek just waltzed Matilda all over the ice and put the biscuit past the keeper!" EDIT: b-o-l-l-o-c-k-s? Really filter?

"Vanek just waltzed Matilda all over the ice and put the biscuit past the keeper!" EDIT: b-o-l-l-o-c-k-s? Really filter? Don't know why, but I read that with an Australian accent. Better throw a "brilliant" or two, and perhaps a "bloody" in there to make it sound more English.
Claude_Verret Posted January 18, 2012 Report Posted January 18, 2012 Sylvester is pretty bad. Hearing Gurtler's name brought up is funny. Does he really do a good job with the Bandits? I'm asking seriously because I haven't heard him do those games. He was horrible as the Sabres play by play guy. He had that over the top, forced, soccer like GGGGOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLL call that hurt your ears. And I recall more than one time he'd get caught going into his aforementioned goal call, only to realize that it had actually hit the post so you'd get : GOOOAAAAALLLPOST!!! He was brutal.
Ranger Posted January 18, 2012 Report Posted January 18, 2012 I'm in Portland. RJ's son was all right, not great, but still professional. He got replaced this summer by a guy who sounds like an AM radio DJ that way over pronounces words. I don't know if it was retaliation for the Pirates getting stiffed by the Sabres (I don't know the buyout amount, so it might not be stiffed, but the players provided is). The new guy is very hard to listen to him.
RazielSabre Posted January 18, 2012 Report Posted January 18, 2012 Sorry, but no one would understand a word you say ... we don't speak the King's english here in North America. Lizzy isn't dead yet, still the Queen's English for now... :P "Blimey, that septic Ryan Miller just made a cracking save! He's just been the dogs ###### tonight!" "Vanek just waltzed Matilda all over the ice and put the biscuit past the keeper!" EDIT: b-o-l-l-o-c-k-s? Really filter? Ohh I like that...

But, is that your version of the "King's" english ... with a cockney flair, right. ###### to you too!! EDIT: The filter does work on that most classy of english words.
blugold43 Posted January 18, 2012 Report Posted January 18, 2012 i don't think sylvester's bad at all. i think you just get used to hearing a certain guy (rj), and then everything else sounds bad in comparison. having said that, i always liked gary thorne when he did hockey on espn...the only blight on his record in my eyes was the year he slobbed all over ray bourque's knob when the av's rented him to win the cup. it was so bruschi-esque i could have puked. but other than that bit of weirdness, i always liked the guy. he definitely brought some drama to the telecast.
Who Else? Posted January 18, 2012 Report Posted January 18, 2012 I just want to bolster the resistance of RJ's son. We had him here for the Otters and I really couldn't stand it. Unfortunately, it looks like the organization is or at least was trying to put him in position to move up.

I would rather listen to Sylvester calling a 5-0 yawner then RJ calling a 6-5 barnburner if I have no pictures to keep up.

I would rather listen to Sylvester calling a 5-0 yawner then RJ calling a 6-5 barnburner if I have no pictures to keep up. Very true. Taking RJ out of the picture all together, I still stand by my statement that a pro sports team should be able to do better. He's a fill-in, not someone who's made his career calling games, and it sounds like it quite frequently. There are worse people out there, but I'd definitely like someone better.
fan2456 Posted January 18, 2012 Report Posted January 18, 2012 I think he is adequate and accurate. Gurtler was terrible. Personally, I think he comes across arrogant. My friends and I refer to him as the little cherub and I hate to make that opening statement about adequate.. I actually find Sylvester and Gare much more accurate than RJ and Neale. Hate to say that as I've listened to RJ from day one. I need the Sabres to give me excitement, not the announcers.

fan2456 Posted January 18, 2012 Report Posted January 18, 2012 As i said I don't like him............................................so when has the team been exciting in the games he's called?
Koomkie Posted January 18, 2012 Report Posted January 18, 2012 maybe this has been mentioned, but it sounds like K.S. is holding back a major poo when he "gets excited". he is good at play-by-play, but he is soooooooooooooooooo boring. his excitement is not genuine sounding, and his timing is a little off....when a big play occurs you can almost here a switch in his head saying "okay, now act excited". it does not happen organically with him. i really don't enjoy listening to him. and i cannot stand harry neale. oh man is he bad. baaaaaad bad. it will be a sad say when RJ is finished. on a side note....i really like rob ray. he has a hard time getting out words sometimes, but he is actually very witty, honest, and he knows the game very well. he points out a lot of great things and recognizes the "little things" players do. not that i want him for calling the game, i just think he adds a lot to the broadcast. oh, and roby looks like frankenstien that has used a little too much medicinal marijuana.
carpandean Posted January 18, 2012 Report Posted January 18, 2012 I think he is adequate and accurate ... I actually find Sylvester and Gare much more accurate than RJ and Neale. Setting Neale aside (he's wrong so often, it's not even funny), if Kevin is more accurate than RJ, it's because he doesn't say nearly as much. There are so many times where he barely says anything or says generically "the Sabres ..." or whoever they are playing rather than actually using players' names. RJ will occassionally mix up two players when it's not obvious who it is and you can only see one of the two numbers, but mostly he's correct with both teams. I can actually follow much of the action from what he says, whereas with Kevin, I'd have no clue without the video to go with it.
nobody Posted January 18, 2012 Report Posted January 18, 2012 I don't mind Sylvester when listening to his play by play on TV. On the radio you need to have a bit more excitement I think. You're creating the picture for the listener.
Eleven Posted January 20, 2012 Author Report Posted January 20, 2012 I hardly can figure out what is going on. This sucks.
Koomkie Posted January 20, 2012 Report Posted January 20, 2012 the best was today when antropov scored the 4th goal...."they score" he actually sounded sad and not in the least surprised.
Doohicksie Posted January 20, 2012 Report Posted January 20, 2012 Recruit Joe Bowen away from the Leafs .... Yeah, our other Ontario import, Harry Neale, is just so flippin' excellent. the best was today when antropov scored the 4th goal...."they score" he actually sounded sad and not in the least surprised. I wasn't surprised. Were you surprised? I was a little sad. Weren't you?
Andrew Amerk Posted January 20, 2012 Report Posted January 20, 2012 Anyone is better than Emrich and the pointless stories he tells while gameplay is going on.

Weren't you? not at all, and yes. thats why i think that was the first time i had heard KS show some genuine emotion in a call.
