Robviously Posted January 17, 2012 Report Posted January 17, 2012 So? Briere said he would take a "hometown discount" and bolted hours after free agency started. I've learned not to take things players say verbatim or to heart. They are great at telling people what they want to hear. He bolted because the Sabres didn't want him. They picked Drury. (Picking Drury was great and he did agree to an extension earlier that season, but then the Sabres pulled a "Sabres" and pulled the deal because they thought it was too much money.) Anyways, if it's your career, you're going to want to go where you feel wanted. I know a couple pro athletes and it's not just about money. The money matters, but teams need to show you how bad they want you. The Sabres didn't offer Briere the money OR make him feel wanted. Don't blame Drury or Briere for Black Sunday. The Sabres are just a horribly run organization.

Perhaps that was by design and i'm overthinking it. In the past he has played near 70 games. Maybe these past few years have tired him out? Have felt ever since Day 1 though that Miller is too cocky for his own good.
Tyrannustyrannus Posted January 17, 2012 Report Posted January 17, 2012 how about field an acceptable defense in front of him? And somebody please post something that would indicate Miller's cockiness. I just want to see this once. I love how everyone speculates what he is thinking, despite him saying the opposite. He wants to play in Detroit! He wants to play in LA with his wife! And why would Detroit want him over Howard?
RazielSabre Posted January 17, 2012 Report Posted January 17, 2012 At $6 mil a year I expect him to out perform Enroth. Enroth has the same guys in front of him and has played much better than Miller, IMO. I want Miller to be the franchise goalie that he and many others believes he is. I want him to be a leader and stand up after games like last night and put it all on his own shoulders no matter how poorly the team plays in front of him. I want him to say it and more importantly, I want him to believe it. Score a couple of goalies, shut out Howard and he'd have made all the difference last night. You want Hasek/Roy for $6mill a year? Dream on, these days you pay Ehrhoff money for a game changing goalie. Hasek COULD carry games, Miller is a great goalie but his not top 3 all time. I'm not arguing with you that his seriously underperforming this season (Enroth might have better numbers but the goals he has given up have been really badly timed). You want him to say 'I should have won this game' when the team scores 0 goals? Thats possible the most stupid comment I've ever read. Ever. Of all time. I want him to call the team out and admit failure on his part. Shock horror! Thats what he does... how about field an acceptable defense in front of him? And somebody please post something that would indicate Miller's cockiness. I just want to see this once. I love how everyone speculates what he is thinking, despite him saying the opposite. He wants to play in Detroit! He wants to play in LA with his wife! And why would Detroit want him over Howard? Wespect! +1
apuszczalowski Posted January 17, 2012 Report Posted January 17, 2012 how about field an acceptable defense in front of him? And somebody please post something that would indicate Miller's cockiness. I just want to see this once. I'd like to see it too, Fans complain cause they want someone to be vocal and come out and call out players, but when its Miller that says it, its him being cocky and not taking the blame. The defence (and even the forwards) have played horrible in front of him and are leaving him out to dry. The usual comment to saying this is "well Enroth came in and he looked good out there with those same players". Difference is, last night when the Sabres pulled Miller, the RedWings also had mercy and called off their attack, like alot of teams will do to show some sportsmanship. If I was Miller, I would be glaring at my bench too, seeing as how no one in front of him cared enough to show up. I play the goalie position too, and even the best can't make every save, the job gets even tougher when your team in front of you is leaving guys open next to the net, can't clear the puck, and continue to give pucks away. You can get into a funk very easily, and to get out of it, sometimes you just need your teammates to help out and pick up their game, but this team doesn't seem to be able to do this and is expecting him to carry them like he has in the past. You can't get out of this funk by continuing to face 40+ shots a game
darksabre Posted January 17, 2012 Report Posted January 17, 2012 the league hasn't suddenly figured him out -- he's still capable of being a very good goalie. i am in the camp of thinking that says he's still not right in the head (literally) after the lucic thing. i would be in favor of shelving the guy and letting him have a full and complete recovery. Possibly. Even if he's not going anywhere, I see no reason why Enroth can't play more games. This season is basically a mulligan so why not let the kid get some time and let Miller get some perspective.
Bmwolf21 Posted January 17, 2012 Report Posted January 17, 2012 Last week I started the topic "Fire The Goalie Coach"; consequently, I provoked the ire of some of the forum faithful. <snip>We need Miller back on his game. I've made the argument for moving Corsi in the past, and gotten the same response - either people think he is doing a good job or don't see the benefit for replacing him. There is no easy answer here, it's apparent from the comments from Miller, and Pommers, that ###### in the locker room is a little too cozy, remember the last time they got bitch slapped, Regher came out and spoke up, Now Pommers and Miller are finally fed up, why it took this long I'm not sure. It's time for Pommers to be a Capt. and start showing it in the locker room, his Lady Bing attitude needs to go away. I believe the cancers are Roy, and Stafford, if anyone should go it's these two guys, I know Roy has been a ppg in the past but his locker room and off ice attitude needs to go. my .02 Pommer's comments sounded liked a scared little kid being sent to the principal's office.
Tyrannustyrannus Posted January 17, 2012 Report Posted January 17, 2012 Pommer's comments sounded liked a scared little kid being sent to the principal's office. Please show me when a captain has called out his teamates, by name, in front of the media. Pommer is captain for what he is, not for what he isn't. The Sabres don't need someone who can talk, they have plenty of people in the organization that can always say the right thing. They need someone who can play hockey. He's stepped it up big time on the ice this season. and who cares how many goals Miller lets in if the other goalie lets in none?
TrueBlueGED Posted January 17, 2012 Report Posted January 17, 2012 I think the problem with trading Miller is two-fold. One of course is finding a team that needs a goaltender, is in "win now" mode, and also has the cap space to accommodate his contract. The second of course is finding a reliable veteran goaltender to replace him. I like Enroth's potential as much as anyone, but I think the stretch earlier in the season proved he's not ready yet to handle 65 games a year. We need someone who can be 1b to his 1a, and play 32 games a season while giving us a chance to win. Those guys are hard to find because if they can handle 32 games a year, some team will think they can handle 60 and give them starter money. Also, Miller has a NTC, so I highly doubt he agrees to go to a bottom-feeder even if they wanted him. Trading him is one of those things that seems like a good idea, but the mechanics of getting it done in a way that helps the team is much more difficult.
rickshaw Posted January 17, 2012 Report Posted January 17, 2012 Miller obviously has zero confidence. We can all agree on that. But maybe it goes beyond confidence. Maybe it is his coaching. Last season the Canucks fired the goalie coach and brought in a new one. Luongo was not happy as the guy they fired was his good friend. But the facts are Luongo had his best season ever (aside from the finals) and he was a better goalie in many technical areas. Can he improve on stuff, sure, they all can. I think Corsi should take some of the heat for the Miller troubles. His post game comments, to me, suggested that he knows that the team is what it is and that Darcy won't do anything. That was how I took his comments. Sad state of affairs when you don't have to worry about being traded. Far too comfy if you ask me. I'd blow it up. Reiger/Ruff gone. 2/3 of the team, gone. Keep - Enroth, Regher, Ehrhoff, Myers, Vanek, Gerbe and the young guys in Rochester that have played.

We need Miller back on his game. Snipped for, well, readability. Quite agree with the logic. I'd get rid of Corsi to begin with.
87168 Posted January 17, 2012 Report Posted January 17, 2012 What else can he say without being considered a malcontent? Did you see him glaring at the bench last night or here his comments? Did I "here" his comments? Of course I did. What does him speaking out of frustration after an embarrassing loss have to do with his previous statements of wanting to remain in Buffalo.

What does him speaking out of frustration after an embarrassing loss have to do with his previous statements of wanting to remain in Buffalo. It sounded like he was pretty fed up with the status quo, and wasn't expecting any changes. Why do most people think getting traded is some sort of punishment? Ever think some players would rather play for Detroit, Chicago, Boston, Vancouver because they are good organizations and are real cup contenders. Maybe they would rather be in Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa because they are Canadians and want to play in their borders. Maybe they want to play for a southern or California team because they do not like the weather in the town they are playing in for nine months? Do you really believe some of the players on this roster (not Miller specifically) want to be jettisoned?

No goalie would be successful with the pathetic D this team has to offer standing in front of him. Enroth has proven to be the better goalie this season. He's played in front of the same team Miller has and has better numbers to show. Not to mention he's been making 40+ and 30+ saves a game lately and has no wins to show for it because our offense in absent.

Do you really believe some of the players on this roster (not Miller specifically) want to be jettisoned? I look at being traded as a good thing for most players with this organization's current state. My point is some players want to see success with the current team they are on. Some players want to be the reason an organization such as the Sabres wins the cup. You move a player to a team such as Detroit or Chicago who already has the pieces necessary to win then what satisfaction or contribution is that player going to feel. Again, I'm speaking in broad terms.
HopefulFuture Posted January 17, 2012 Report Posted January 17, 2012 Craig Custance article on the Sabres after last night's loss. An NHL scout who has seen the Buffalo Sabres enough to realize something isn't right about this season's group was asked about their franchise goalie, Ryan Mille r. Miller was yanked Monday night in the Detroit Red Wings' 5-0 win over the Sabres, Buffalo's ninth consecutive road loss. "I don't see the fire. There's just not the same fire," the scout observed. "I don't see that in him like I did a couple years ago."
