WTF is with Stafford interviewing with his equipment off but still wearing his helmet? He looks like he's about to board a short bus.

Much needed win tonight. Good way to start 2012. Started off sluggish, but they picked it up and played 50 minutes of solid hockey from that point on.

TJ Brennan, awesome job defensively. Stafford on the score sheet (2 points) and Roy as well, hopefully a sign of things to come.

As for Gerbe, never have a problem with his play. Much deserved goal, and a pretty one at that.

One battle at a time.

On the Edmonton feed, the interviewer said to Gerbe that he is listed at 5'5", and asked how he's done so well. Nathan began with "well, I think the listing favors my size a bit; I'm not quite there yet."

Wow, Stafford a goal and 2 helpers, trade him while he's hot. Nice game by Gerbe and the Adam line. Pommers isn't the only one on this team that can't one time a puck, our pointmen sure don't know how to. Now time to get two in a row.

Who's wearing Stafford's jersey ?

Stafford's been playing well for a while. It's just that he hasn't caught a break around the net when he should bury them, which drives us all crazy. The Leo setup was sweet, but the break Staff got on his own goal was much needed.

I really wish I could agree with you but I can't. At least not entirely. True, The Hobble has been getting some decent position in front and is even having some tough luck there but it's what he does in other areas on the ice that drive me crazy. Or I should say, it's what he doesn't do. Chiefly, that is give a sell out effort in every puck battle. He just goes through the motions more often than not it seems. And with his size and talent that shouldn't be the case.

GO SABRES!!!

Nice win over the young and the restless. I wish I hadn't had to give up my tix.

From what little I did hear, I'd have to agree that the crowd really wasn't into it until late. Too bad PA isn't here anymore. This time, he'd have been right with that.

Then again, I don't expect too much out of a crowd where the team had been stinking and the opponent is in the basement of the opposite conference. But still...really? SOME energy?

Good win over a team with more (eventual) NHLers than the Sabres dressed.

Sounded like Miller did a nice job.

I hope Staph can keep having three-point nights; it makes him more attractive in a trade.

It also makes him more attractive to Regier, who will want to keep him.

It's a catch 21.

Ouch. But VERY nicely done.

EDIT: Post of the year! (But it's January 3.)

He thinks I'm out there looking for him.

Which bone did he actually break in his wrist???

Hmm, but those are just indicators. My arms are longer than my legs and I fit the profile, though not as tall as Myers and was checked out and negative. Like I said those are indicators. His chest is not that narrow, so I would think it doesn't apply, but yes he should get his heart checked just in case. P.S. It is an easy cardiac sonogram, takes about 15 minutes to verify and I almost guarantee Myers has been checked for it.

Thanks for sharing. I would hope Myers is an obvious enough candidate for testing.

It's a Golden Helmet...not Golden Shower..... ;)

Good - a win

Very Good - at home

Outstanding - sell high(Stafford)

Stafford is starting to remind me of Macarthur with all these multipoint games, but no consistency.

It was two points and not much else to take for the game.

The goaltending at both ends was suspect.

A battle of two of the least physical teams in hockey and it showed last night. The Stafford goal was a prime example. Four Oilers just standing around not hitting anyone.

An overall effort that would probably get the Sabres beat by two thirds of the league. They caught a break in the scheduled and cashed it in for two points.

Gerbe is a player that I would like to see make it through any house cleaning.

I don't remember if Vanek actually dressed for the game.

Boyes continues to steal money from this franchise. Would rather see Tropp or some of the other kids in the lienup. Boyes serves no purpose.

Disappointed we didn't get a good look at Nugent-Hopkins. Hall and Eberle looked great. It was a bit odd in the second intermission when Robi, Rob and Harry were discussing the talent on the Oilers and thier future when Sylvester brought up that the Sabres had Kassian, Myers and Ennis as first round picks. It had nothing to do with the conversation and seemed really odd. It was like Regier was speaking into Kevin's ear from the control room. It was really odd.

Vanek was sick. I think with the flu.

Surprised that Sylvester didn't mention Stafford in that breath of 1st rounders.

There's nothing we can do with Boyes at this point. He had his second chance here and as a soon-to-be UFA I don't think many will be interested. I suspect he'll be let go at end of season. Regarding Gerbe - completely agree, I really like his play.

I will take one thing from the game, the Sabres goals came on chances they keep screwing up, plays which have worked recently. We finally made the most of them tonight. Do that against any team and we'll be far more successful.

Vanek is on NHL.com's stat sheet. Apparently registered 3 shots unless I'm going mad. If he can register shots while not playing then I think Roy and Staff definitely have something to learn. ;)

i sat in a friend's seats for the game last night. that W did little to nothing to change my perspective on this team; basically, i've never been so underwhelmed by a home win that i attended -- never been left with a *meh* as i filed out of the arena/center. i realize that there are injuries up and down the roster to good players and that the 2 best players were running on fumes, but that's just not a good hockey team. once healthy, they have the talent to be good (not great, i don't think), but they aren't, and they don't appear to be trending that way. they're in 11th place and, sadly, that's where they belong.

harrington from the local paper said something to the effect that he was watching a wings and hawks game and felt like he was watching a different league. i watched the winter classic and found that the cameras and angles allowed me to see both teams' breakout schemes as though i were at a live game -- both squads (rangers and flyers) had some really nice set pieces in that area of the game that were executed well. at last night's game, i don't think i saw one crisp breakout from the sabres -- most of the time, they were just chipping and muddling their way into the neutral zone. just ugly hockey.

and, finally, it was very quiet in the center last night (as the edmonton writer noted below (in fairness, he was just a day removed from a game in chicago)), which is saying something since there were multiple pockets of canadians on hand to cheer a (western) canadian squad. but i've become convinced that the center isn't quiet because of chet and muffy (and similar culture changes among fans); the center is quiet because the fans have grown bone tired of a team that plays (and a coach that implements) hockey that is both ugly and uninspiring/uninspired.

@SportsnetSpec Mark Spector Sports THere is zero atmosphere in this rink. Seldom have seen 18,000 people make less noise.

@SportsnetSpecMark Spector Sports Hope we didn't offend any Sabres fans. This a great hockey town, but at this point, by far the quietest rink I've been in in 2011-12.

My take:

  • Stafford played well...and hopefully today we trade him ;)
  • The call on Goalie interference was a bad call, and the Kaleta call was a piss-poor makeup call. The too many men call was just dumb.
  • Boyes puts forth a lot of effort, even if he's not cashing in. He'll get there.
  • Vanek and Pom being sick are still better than most of our other forwards
  • Gerbe is a beast.
  • That wasn't the most inspired win I've seen, in fact it was probably one of the unprettiest wins ever, and does not make me feel any better about the state of the team :(

I still believe it is a combination of both of these. Actually it's Chet, Muffy & kids. Is it just me or are there more little kids at Sabres games then ever? Kids who are more concerned with concessions & Sabretooth, than they are the game. I think this is a byproduct of cheap season tickets. Of course if they raised season ticket prices, chances are there would be less kids, but also a chance less tickets sold in general.
