johnyvegas Posted January 6, 2012 Report Posted January 6, 2012 One thing....how many people in NYC have TWC anyway, don't the majority of people in that area have Cablevision? Just asked my buddy on Long Island about it. He said TW is in the city. The Island is Cable vision.
SportsFan88 Posted January 6, 2012 Report Posted January 6, 2012 Just asked my buddy on Long Island about it. He said TW is in the city. The Island is Cable vision. Interesting, the way they pass it off on TV I would have thought almost everyone that way had Cablevision. Didn't Cablevision go through this same battle with all the NY Sports stations like a year or two ago if I recall?
qwksndmonster Posted January 6, 2012 Report Posted January 6, 2012 I've seen posts on other sites about this for days, like Time Warner Conversations, now there is an official boycott of MSG http://twitter.com/#!/dropMSG Who's your favorite Sabres player of all time and why?
Taro T Posted January 6, 2012 Report Posted January 6, 2012 WGR reported this morning that there was a "pro MSG" flyer inside the free game program handed out last night. Not surprising that it sounds like the Sabres are on the side of MSG. Way for GR to be right on top of things as usual. <_< They had a flyer for MSG on FiOS in the 'tux & pux' program as well.
billsrcursed Posted January 6, 2012 Report Posted January 6, 2012 Who's your favorite Sabres player of all time and why? Excellent...
plenzmd1 Posted January 6, 2012 Report Posted January 6, 2012 BTW, I have no idea what this maintenance thing is people are talking about. I have had directv sinse 94, i have never paid a fee. Must say I have never had to have someone come out except for equipment installs, and outside of the $300 i paid for initial dish install(yes, i was so early it cost me $300 for install and $1200 for a reciever that was 8MB and could not even get local stations), never been chraged for any of that either. For anyone calling DTV now, i would mention you are switching cause you want to get the Sabres games...and oh yea you would like the CI or NFL for free..the will give it too I am prety certain
dEnnis the Menace Posted January 6, 2012 Report Posted January 6, 2012 One thing....how many people in NYC have TWC anyway, don't the majority of people in that area have Cablevision? My friend who lived in the city for two years says majority is TWC, and that dish is NOT an option. Didn't realize till I read Chz's article there that Buffalo actually receives(d) revenue from TWC per an agreement. No wonder they are asking lawmakers, et al to step in.
RazielSabre Posted January 6, 2012 Report Posted January 6, 2012 Here's a turnaround, as a brit I've struggled to get games for ages, now with NHL.com's gamecenter thing I seem to be able to get every game while the idiots at TW/MSG discuss how little they care about their customers. Wow. Feel sorry for you guys, hope this gets resolved soon. :)
LabattBlue Posted January 6, 2012 Report Posted January 6, 2012 Right now I am in "who cares" mode, as I believed it would be settled quickly. I'm sure my position will change if this drags on into February, and I start missing games against division rivals, and the leagues better teams.

But then he commented he OWNS his equipment and has been with DirectTV for a couple years. From what I can tell at some point in time DirectTV changed to leasing equipment to subscribers. So, you don't own the equipment but have to pay a $6.00/mo fee for each box AFTER your 1st box install and if you want service and protection that's another $5.99 for ALL receivers, satellite dish, cabling, etc. As an update - it turns out the upgraded Verizon DSL is not available in my area, so I have decided to keep internet with Time Warner - they will reduce my fee to $35.00 for basic roadrunner - 10 mbps down, 1 mbps up. I also just got another $5.00/month off my bill - I told Directv I had paid for center ice on Time Warner, and wanted directv to give it to me free - they said they couldn't do that, but gave me a $120.00 credit (the current prorated amount for center ice) at the rate of $5.00/month - regardless of whether I actually sign up for center ice again. I would recommend anyone signing up for directv make this same claim whether it is true or not - they can't tell who had center ice with time warner - don't ask how I know. I'll have to check to see what my current Roadrunner account is set at for speed - this may be the thing that puts me over the top to switch to DirectTV. One question - when you signed up did you do it all online or did you call them and speak to a rep? I was playing around online and got someone who wanted to chat about signing onto DirectTV but I told him I wasn't quite ready to swtch. And finally, has anyone had experiences with DirectTV in the Rochester area i.e. service issues, attitudes, etc? I've heard some complaints about the local service in the past in Rochester but to be honest I can't remember if that was DirectTV or Dish. I'm curious as to people's experiences good or bad. Thanks again for the info you've posted - it's been really helpful.

Also, anytime you add a new HD or DVR receiver you are agreeing to a new 2 year commitment. I live in Rochester and I've not had any problems with DirecTV. I do get a few signal loss issues but that may be because my dish signal isn't as perfect as it can be.. (damn neighbor's trees).

The install had to be aborted this morning. The installer doesn't normally carry a 40' ladder on the truck, and they won't climb around on the roof, so there was no way they were reaching my roof where I want the dish installed with a 28' ladder. They tried to strongarm me into putting it somewhere else that was more easily accesible, but I wouldn't budge. He tried to tell me he wasn't sure he would go up even if he had a 40' ladder, how the sight lines on the lower portion of the roof were just fine, etc, etc. I told them if they put the dish where he wanted they would have to run 100' of line outside just to get to my inside junction box, and I had concerns about signal quality. He was really pushy, but once he realized I wasn't falling for any of his crap, he relented. The guy was real nice once he relized he was going to have to come back. He is going to come back out Sunday on his day off (if his boss will let him) to do the install, as it's a pretty cake job once the dish is up. All the internal coax for my house is already in place. To anyone who schedules an install - tell the scheduling folks they will need a 40' ladder if you think they will - they are supposed to ask but don't. And don't fall for any of their ###### - make them put the dish where you want it. They will relent. You are all most welcome for the info - you can thank me by using my account number for the $100.00 discount. PM me and I will send it to you.

The only problem being that high, if you get a big snow and some ice freezes up there, you will need to get up there and clean it off. The winds and rain will also have a bigger effect on your signal that high up. The signal is great 99% of the time, but on a day like today with 40mph winds, even though it is bolted down you will have some shimmy there.

Thanks for the input, but: We don't get big snow down in the southern finger lakes area. It's on a steep part of the roof where any snow that does accumulate will run off pretty quick once the sun hits it. They tend to hang the dish off the edge of the roof so snow accumulation shouldn't be an issue anyway. No matter what section of the roof its on, it will catch wind, especially since dish has to face southwest. I don't think the wind will be much different whether the dish is 25, 30 or 35' off the ground, and 25' would be the minimum height. I just don't want to have to look at the damn thing.

Here with the lake effect, when you get the heavy wet stuff it is blowing right onto the dish from the lake. When I lived in Miami, anyone with cable was down for around a month after a big hurricane. I ended up being the host for any big sports events because I had the only dish at the time of my friends. Also, if you run a generator, you are still without TV because TW relay boxes are usually down if your home power is down. With your new setup you won't have that problem. But if the wind does shift it you are going to have to deal with a 40' roof yourself or pay them to come back out and re-adjust your dish. *had my dish "move" in the last big wind storm and now has to pay a tech to come out and re-adjust* If it is possible, you could always set up a tripod at ground level and clamp the dish on a fence pipe. I used that setup and it took 30 seconds to tweak if it went offkilter. Also, it allows you to take the dish on the road with you with your box if you have a cottage, or you want to do a big tailgate on the road and watch the games.

How many times has this happened in how many years of ownership? Would this be covered under their maintenance plan? No way am I climbing 40' up to adjust a dish even if I had a 40' extension ladder, which I don't. I'm worth more alive than dead, and I'd be dead if I tried because my wife would kill me. Honestly, the thought of looking at that dish all the time bothers the hell out of me. They would like to put it on a more gently sloped section of roof directly above my back deck - the roof line starts 12 or 13' above the deck, but the dish would be in plain site from just about anywhere on the deck. It either goes above the deck or it goes on a much higher section of roof that is 30' + off the ground due to high ceilings and walk out basement on back side of house.

I had Dish Network up until last season, about 9 years. The dish was mounted to the side of my house about 20' up and relatively out of the wind. Not once in 9 years did I have an issue with my dish needing readjustment. Last season I switched to DirecTV. The satellite they point to couldn't be seen from the location of my old dish. They had to get up near the peak of my roof to get a good line. I have a 2 story house with a 8' full attic, about 40+" up. Early Spring we had a good blow and I had to call out a tech and pay them to re-adjust. And this last wind a couple weeks ago moved it just enough that I lost most of my HD feeds but still have my standard def feeds. I'll need to call them, and pay them, again. I didn't spring for the maintenance fees. I don't know if allignment is covered or not.

BuffalOhio Posted January 6, 2012 Report Posted January 6, 2012 You fools and your rooftops. I'll pass! It's on a corner of my house that nobody sees except my neighbor. He's a douche, so I really don't care! On my last house, it was over 30 feet to the roof. Screw that! And my wife knows to keep that bush trimmed. Spndnchz, how 'bout you?

beerme1 Posted January 6, 2012 Report Posted January 6, 2012 I am repeating myself but oh well. I had my DirecTV installed last Saturday by a local company with free maintainence. The dish was mounted on the side of the house within brooms reach and not under a gutter so there is no ice worry. We had 55 mph winds Sunday and my signal didn't flinch once. I love the way the dish was mounted. Its very secure. I had an old dish under a gutter that we haven't used in years and I was hoping they could just use that mount but they couldn't bevcause the dish wouldn't clear. I'm better off for it though Weave if you lost your signal and have to have them out to re align the dish I would ask them to mount it better also. Alternatively you can also realign it yourself with out much issue if you want also.
