LabattBlue Posted January 5, 2012 Report Posted January 5, 2012 I wish FIOS was available in the North Towns... ..and Lancaster. Verizon is missing out on growing their market share by never deploying the fiber infrastructure to several of Buffalo's closest suburbs along with the city itself. I guess they don't believe in the old saying, strike while the iron is hot.
Rico7 Posted January 5, 2012 Report Posted January 5, 2012 As a computer nerd, I have been drooling over FiOS since its inception. I would switch in a heartbeat if only they would come to Cheektowaga :-(. The lines have been in place for a couple years. Not sure for the reasoning why Fios isn't up and running in Cheek. But it should br by now.
wallybarthman Posted January 5, 2012 Report Posted January 5, 2012 Don't hold your breath waiting for FiOS - at this point the areas that have it seem to be the only areas that will have it for the foreseeable future: http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2361919,00.asp
kishoph Posted January 5, 2012 Report Posted January 5, 2012 The lines have been in place for a couple years. Not sure for the reasoning why Fios isn't up and running in Cheek. But it should br by now. I live in North Buffalo and we can't get Fios, my one Daughter has it and everything runs real good including the internet.. I'm not so sure about the maintenance and repair service though, if it cost extra for immediate service. or not.
beerme1 Posted January 5, 2012 Report Posted January 5, 2012 There are things to consider. You don't get service calls with DirecTV either, so you're on your own unless you pay the maintenance fee per month. They also don't replace equipment without it. I've not had an issue yet, but just telling you. I bought my sweet DirecTv set up from a local retailer instead of over the phone with DirectTV. The local people include free maintanence! Also I did some research and it seems I was the first person around here to get the whole house dvr model HR34 that has a 1TB hard drive and my MSG HD picture is noticably better than it was with TW. It is the newest piece of equipment and is also miles better than the hd dvr box we had with TW. As someone mentioned dont hold your breath on Fios. If you cant get it yet you may never be able to.
Ghost of Dwight Drane Posted January 5, 2012 Report Posted January 5, 2012 My guess is this goes 4-5 weeks. I will call around the 17th when TW is at peak panic and get my bill knocked down in some way assuming the Sabres will be back on the first week of Feb.
johnyvegas Posted January 5, 2012 Report Posted January 5, 2012 OK.. i know i asked this once... but want to try again. I'm looking for any insight into the visibilty of of the Sabres games in the Syracuse market. FIOS is here, in my nieghborhood but i've got this sinking feeling if i switch, I'll only get SD broadcasts. We've got (had) the dedicated SABRES channel on TW right now and from what i can see, FIOS is only offering MSG and MSG+ in HD. I walked to my friends house during the last game and nuthin, except for a replay of it (in HD) at 1:00am.. Where does that leave those of us in Syracuse? I can't get a striaght answer from anyone at FIOS. They are clueless. Does anyone on this board live in the Syr area? I think I may be in a market with ZERO options right now.

Weave Posted January 5, 2012 Report Posted January 5, 2012 My understanding is that if your neighborhood doesn't already have FiOS you won;t be getting it. Ever. If FiOS was proving to be a worthwhile investment with a good return expected for further expansion I expect they would have continued the expansion already.

I know on the Sabres games when they show the HD channel they show it as 577 on FiOS. I think this is only for FiOS in Buffalo as 577 in Syracuse is SNY HD.
LTS Posted January 5, 2012 Report Posted January 5, 2012 Yes on Directv, no on verizon - I forgot to ask on verizon - on a bill of 24.99 I am anticipating less than $5.00 in taxes. I had to pay $13 and change in up front taxes for the system and install - there are no other fees for install, and all equipment was free. Did you pay the maintenance fee? Did you ever use their service? Did you have any problems with equipment? I did for awhile then I thought i had a problem but I fixed it myself. I've never had any issues with the equipment, not as of yet. Same for Rochester. Never going to happen, somehow, Rochester, the high tech town managed to get Citizen Communications (that's who now owns Frontier) as it's telecom market owner. Look them up, they have the mission to be the #1 rural communications provider in the US. Imagine that... Rochester is hosed as far as options.. it's really TWC or nothing for Internet. FIOS will never happen. I think Verizon stopped FIOS because they believe they can achieve similar quality (or good enough quality) with a wireless technology which is much cheaper to roll out. We shall see on that. Moreover, we need to realize that at some point the content creators will bypass traditional cable and simply stream their content. The likes of TWC and Verizon will be nothing more than the connection to the network. DirecTV will be screwed at that point too.
wallybarthman Posted January 5, 2012 Report Posted January 5, 2012 Here's a more recent article: http://venturebeat.com/2011/12/09/verizon-stops-fios-build-out/ And it looks as though LTS is onto something.... The issue with FiOS is that the up-front costs are expensive - really expensive in fact. When FiOS launched it was at the peak of the bubble and wireless technology was good - but not great. Couple the housing bust (which slowed down roll out) with the improvements in wireless technology and voila - you have our current situation.

BuffalOhio Posted January 5, 2012 Report Posted January 5, 2012 Here is my DirecTV account number: 009429692 Please use it when you subscribe. We will both save $100.00 off our bills. I've been a customer since 2001. I had TWC for about 7 minutes one year when Versus wasn't on DirecTV. Everything about TWC sucked. I only use them for Internet. My understanding is that if your neighborhood doesn't already have FiOS you won;t be getting it. Ever. If FiOS was proving to be a worthwhile investment with a good return expected for further expansion I expect they would have continued the expansion already. It's completely unavailable anywhere in Ohio. Man, would I love to get my hands on one of those fiberoptic cables for my Internet feed. Wooooooosh! Or keep TWC for Internet. I think the standalone price is 55 a month. WOW! I have TWC Internet for $29.95 here in Ohio.
BuffalOhio Posted January 5, 2012 Report Posted January 5, 2012 And I DON'T BUNDLE. For phone service I use this: http://ooma.com. Buy the box for $189.00 and phone service is completely free. It's a Voice-Over-IP system. All you pay is your monthly FCC and other related taxes. It's $3.47 a month here in Ohio. I'm certain it's more in NYS! If you want more information, PM me. I have a few refer-a-friends left. I pay my DirecTV bill, which admittedly, is quite high, but that's my fault, my TWC Internet Bill, which is $29.95, and my phone is very very inexpensive. Give it a shot!

I'll second the endorsement of Ooma - we had MagicJack and were very unhappy - switched to Ooma and it's great. 3.47 a month in PA as well since we have no local taxes on phone service. We have an Ooma base that plugs into a three handset handsfree phone set and that's all. Plugs right into our router - no problem.
ROC_exEMT Posted January 5, 2012 Report Posted January 5, 2012 Based on what Korab posted above (thanks for that info by the way, EXACTLY what I've been looking for) I may be considering switching over to DirectTV. However I'll have to keep TW Roadrunner. I live in the Rochester area to no FioS for me either. As I'm not real knowledgeable with all the "other packages" available is there ANY way to get Sabre's broadcasts while still staying on TWC other than through streaming sites? Do they offer anything like Center Ice or something like that? If I call TWC to cancel my cable service I'm figuring they'll try and offer me something to entice me to stay so I want to know if anything's available that will insure I get Sabre broadcasts.
Figster Posted January 5, 2012 Report Posted January 5, 2012 While I have heard nothing recently on the FIOS expansion market, it should be noted the article you linked is almost two years old. Was told a long time ago Fios was coming to this area soon... Thank God for XS(online) is all I've got to say, hooked up to my flat screen its as good as watching some of my TW cable channels...
LTS Posted January 5, 2012 Report Posted January 5, 2012 For those of you wanting phone service and have Verizon Wireless they have an option to add a home line to your account. http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/explore/?page=home-services I know someone who has it and it works well. I've been without a dedicated number at my house for over 5 years so I'm not too up to speed on everything else. Went to Vonage awhile back then dropped it for cell phones.

From what i gathered from TW when i called them.. even if you get Center Ice, you wont see the games as they are blacked out in the local markets due to the fact that local broadcasters (in this case MSG) have exclusive rights to air the games in the home town markets which supersedes Center Ice's ability to broadcast them. Only way to do it with center ice is to cheat when you sign up and spoof your IP to show you are in a different market. Not even sure it's really possible and certainly a huge PITA.

Frontier has a deal with the city of Rochester and Verizon sold all their existing lines to them. How frontier gets away with this is beyond me because it would seem like some sort of tampering or something. Anyways, wife's calling Directv tonight and hopefully we can have it installed within a week.

Scotty Posted January 5, 2012 Report Posted January 5, 2012 See, in Rochester you don't have much fo a choice. FrontierDSL is awful, so TWC is the only option for Internet. Now, DirecTV is the only option for Sabres.. crazy how my free market society is lacking many options. I have Frontier DSL and I have had Road Runner in the past roadrunner is better but as long as you are not isohunting all night, watching Netflix and playing Call Of Duty at the same time DSL is fine. I am locked at $25 a year for DSL for 2 years and am fine with it. I also switched to Directv this past summer, I am glad I did. Cheaper, better HD, a cool iPad app, the DVR capacity is 2 to 3 times larger than TWC. I did add the service protection plan due to my first receiver overheating during the warranty period. My neighbor works for TWC and he says MSG will pull this on Directv when it's contract is up but they have already agreed to MSG terms by airing Fuse (which I do not watch) and signed an agreement in 2009 so I think I am safe for a while. What scares me if I was still a TWC customer is that Dish still does not have MSG, and Time Warner has still told the NFL to screw themselves with their network, I have a feeling this is going to be awhile. But that also burns my ass because when I think of TWC I look at them like a more local cable/satellite provider than Directv, in fact I did not jump to Directv in last few years because I thought I would not be able to see the Sabres every game. That it for now.
