Yeah, you want to go with your clutch guys for shootouts, not the guys who've proven consistently unreliable in any situation. I wasn't too happy seeing Stafford on the power play either. I'd really like to be in Lindy's mind so I can at least try to comprehend what he's trying to do. You may ask "well, who else is he supposed to put out there besides Vanek and Boyes?" At this point, I'd try anything. I'd rather see Regehr or Brennan blow their shootout attempts at this point. They may even surprise us and score.

Did Vanek even get his attempt on goal in the shootout? I only saw it from one angle, but it looked like he shot wide from like 6 feet away.

Oh, and Gerbe needs to drop his gloves and just fookin' deck the next guy that pats him on the head. You don't have to be tall to break a guy's jaw, just sayin'.

I agree. Both Stafford and Roy on the PP make me angry. Stafford cannot stickhandle nor enter the zone to set up something and Roy on the point is just a disaster waiting to happen as we have seen several times when Lindy tried this PP strategy earlier in the season. Roy usually cannot get shots through from close proximity....the odds of him shooting into the shin pads increase exponentially the farther away from the net he gets.

As for the shootout, I could not stop swearing when I saw Roy and Stafford. What exacerbated my anger was their pitiful attempts. To reinforce your sentiment, "at this point, I'd try anything. I'd rather see Regehr or Brennan blow their shootout attempts at this point. They may even surprise us and score."

Outshot 46 - 28

Leo, 29:57 TOI, 2 asst.

Enroth, 44 saves

McNabb, 21:55 TOI, +1 and 3 pancakes. I think may have been his best game, send him back down before he gets poisoned.

Roy and Stafford, 38:14 combined TOI, 0 points and 2 of the lamest shootout attempts I have seen.

Lindy Ruff, 4 years too long.

Have a Happy and Safe New Year everyone.

Every time Stafford has been in a shootout he's looked totally lame; he's clueless. Obviously, Lindy is too.

Someone got the 80's music reference.

Yeah! Me! Beds Are Burning...and I stopped listening to pop music when disco arrived.

The Old Guy gets points for that one.

Didn't see the game. Was making merry. Did they really scratch Kassian?

At this point, I'd rather see him go back to Rochester, he's not going to develop under Lindy Ruff (just the opposite), let him go back down and learn and bring him back when Lindy's gone.

Quality post. Keep 'em coming.

Anyway, we need to get Myers back ASAP. Leopold can't be playing 30 minutes a night.

Myers????

I gotta say, from being at the game, that they really didn't look too bad. Ton of effort from seventeen of the skaters, a number of whom really aren't NHL-level players. Didn't take any crap from anyone. Two nice, really nice, goals. Pommer looked like a leader out there with the kids.

I'm not sure how it came through on TV.

Yeah, I did hear the posts ring four times.

Not sure what happened with Vanek on the shootout. He's normally reliable, so gotta let it slide.

I am sure what happened with Stafford on the shootout. He's gotta go.

Also--did Rick/Harry explain what was going on with the two misconduct penalties? That was impossible to figure out from inside the FNC.

And there HAS to be a rational explanation for Kassian, right? Soreness? Some minor, nagging thing from Saturday that the team doesn't want to disclose? He pissed on Ted Black's wife or got into a fight with a teammate? I mean, SOMETHING?! I don't think Ruff would just bench him without cause at this point. Not for a second.

It was just more great coaching from Lindy Ruff. It's why the guy is a hockey genius.

Ellis? Kaleta? Gerbe? Stafford? McCormick? Adam?

Oh, wait. This is a game, right?

Guess again.

First part: Not sure your point; if the point is that some of those guys aren't NHL-level talent, agreed. If it's about the effort, I'd say that all of them except for one put in a solid effort. Gerbe, Adam, Kaleta were particularly impressive in that department.

Second part: It's not a guess; it's logic. There HAS to be some logical explanation for it. I know a number of you don't want Ruff around here anymore; I get that. Take his persona out of the equation: there's no way a coach with fourteen years of experience--I don't care who it is or what team--just benches a kid who's performing well without reason and in favor of the likes of Matt Ellis. There's got to be something that we don't know.

It was a snarky way of saying all of these guys (hell, the entire bottom 6) are playing in the NHL as regulars any of which could have been the target of your comment, which ones did you have in mind.

Edit- PS. See Deluca's it's a game thread.

I wish I shared your optimism. We all know how much Lindy likes his reliable vets.

Posts making more saves then Enroth, hehe

Posts aren't saves; they're missed shots.

Every time Stafford has been in a shootout he's looked totally lame; he's clueless. Obviously, Lindy is too.

Stafford copied Kotalik's backhand move in Al's last season here with much success (4 for 5 to start the season.) Then, goalies realized that, unlike Kotalik, Stafford doesn't have any other moves, so they shut that one down easily. He's been useless since (3 for 20 over 3-1/2 seasons.)

Brad Boyes, on the other hand, makes it look easy over and over.

He likes winning more than he likes "reliable" vets. (Even if the team isn't doing too much of it lately.) He's kept kids in there when performing well in the past; look at Ennis and Gerbe last season. There simply has to be something. It could be a disciplinary issue (remember, we are talking about Kassian, here); it could be soreness, some freaky family thing that has him distracted, a minor injury, but there has to be a reason for it. Whether we'll ever learn that reason, I don't know.

EDIT: Just to make it clear: It's not that I can't believe Ruff would be so stupid. It's that I can't believe ANY coach would be so stupid. There just has to be a reason.

How many saves did Enroth make last night? Yea he deserved a win. Our goalies are more than capable.

I'll ask this a second time and its more out of curiosity than anything else really:

Would people rather gives Boyes an extension for a 2-3 years and ditch stafford? I think thats the only way drew goes bye bye.

I'll hang up and listen.

If it is a strict either or (and I do not believe it is) then yes, I'll take Boyes. As maligned as he is, he puts a good effort in. Always has. IMO his biggest failing is the bad luck of being a Darcy deadline day acquisition. He was doomed to be seen by the fans as a failure.

Same here on all points. Not sure why the two are alternatives.

I was thinking that way for cap purposes and I don't believe darcy could fit Kassian-Pommers-Boyes-Kaleta-Stafford all on the same team. Something would have to give and Kaleta is the least expensive so i figured he would be resigned and Pommers and Kassian look pretty secure (regardless of Kassian sitting last night) so that leaves Boyes and Stafford. Not sure if it is a straight up either or but its gotta be somewhat close.
