See what I mean when I say that early-round playoff matchups matter? The Sabres finish eighth instead of seventh last season, and they win a playoff series (against Washout). They finish second instead of third in 2010, and they win a playoff series (Joisey screwed themselves and Buffalo with that unnecessary last-game win that year.)

That's two decisive wins over the supposed elite of the East.

Oh, and Washington changed coaches, too. That changed a lot; they went from a 5-1 loss to 4-2. I guess, if it progresses, that DC might catch up. But it won't progress.

Good game, they really made their shots count during that 1st period. Four post kept the score lower that what it should of been. Washington looked uninspired

most of the game. I'm shocked that nobody even gave Stafford a dirty look after he ran into their Goalie, even though it wasn't that bad of a run, I wouldn't expect that from a team with Dale Hunter as their Coach. I used to like Ovechkin, but he's looking like a fool out there, I can't believe that he didn't receive a penalty the 2nd time he cross checked Adam. I liked Boyes game tonight, other than missing the open net, I still think he can add something to this team, if Lindy let's him settle into a position and a line. Bring on the Devils.

Why the long faces? I mean, the Sabres could have hired Hunter, right? Would have made all the difference?

The implications toward our team was obvious. Whether or not the coaching change works (as yet to be seen), Washington had to do something and they did. You can't fault them for that. Pittsburgh changed coaches mid-season when they were out of the playoffs, too. How'd that work out for them?

With Hecht and Boyes back, can we see the Vanek, Adam, Pommer line again?

I think Hecht would be better with Stafford and Roy.

I was yawning at the tired talk of playoff matchups. You can't prove or disprove your point so it is rather, well, pointless to discuss.

With that roster, which the Sabres don't have, and with everyone coming back from injury in February, it worked out really, really well.

Anyway, this is about the Craps and their joke of a coaching change, which will mean nothing. Good roster up top, decent in the middle, kind of weak on the low end. Imported supposed great goalie.

Still lost to our supposedly ###### (but not really ######) Sabres/Amerks. Again. Blown out. Again.

Game thoughts...

- McNabb has some nice offensive skills. If he can improve his skating in the coming years, he is going to be a very good NHL defenseman.

- I've been advocating Kassian going back down, but he is showing he belongs. A really nice back check tonight in the 1st or 2nd periods. At this point, the only reason I'd send him down is if he starts slumping, or Lindy plays him on the 4th line when more players get healthy.

- Regehr on Ovi...AWESOME. Just goes to show you that it doesn't take much to get the crowd in the game.

- Gaustad just awful on the Caps first goal. Coming from your defensive veteran center, he had no business swatting the puck up the middle when he had a Sabre right next to him who he could have passed it to.

- Ehrhoff is really up and down with his puck handling. One minute great, the next minute hot potato.

- Hecht and Boyes with pretty solid efforts in their first game back.

- The Caps appear to be spinning their wheels. I know they are missing Green, but what happened to the offensive juggernaut they were in past years?

GO SABRES!!!!

I also thought Sekera played well tonight. Good on the outlet and looked confident under pressure.

He's played well all season yet certain poster continue to have a grudge.

Regehr: the crowd was subdued because, well, up 4-0 and in a new period, one might be lulled into a false sense of security

Gaustad: Agreed on the WTF.

Ehrhoff: His first shift was about as bad as a shift gets. Wow, was that bad. Falls down on one, misses the puck (which goes over the blue) on the next.

Boyes/Hecht: I really didn't notice Hecht, which, I suppose, is his role. Boyes looked good.

Crapitals: Yep, spinning wheels. They should change coaches or something.

He's played well all season yet certain poster continue to have a grudge.

Indeed. He's had a solid, if not great, year so far.

I think they should leave Boyes there, at least to see if they can build on tonight. I thought they played well together.

Is that supposed to be me?

Well now that was a pretty good game. I liked the level of compete the team came out with tonight and amount of checks I saw them finish.

They had some really good scoring chances and could have had 2-4 more goals. If they can work that hard game in and game out and get solid goaltending and defense then they will be rewarded more often. Okay now Buffalo lets string a few more of these efforts over a long stretch of games.

Proven? What have Boyes and Hecht proven, other than you can make money in the NHL with a combo of limited offensive talent and less than inspiring effort?

Boyes is nowhere the level of offensive threat he was in St.Louis for those two years. He has 7 goals in his 42 game Sabre career. Right now Boyes is just a guy hanging around the league earning a paycheck.

Wouldn't make a difference is a bit more accurate.

It's getting a little tiring to see this in every single thread. Also, both those players played a solid game tonight.

While I like him, he is 26. His only real NHL time came on a depleted Tampa team. I think he brings great depth as he can play on a scoring line and not embarrass himself like Matt Ellis. Ellis is so void of talent nearly every Amerk forward has more skill. I'm puzzled why he stays ahead of all of them.

Work ethic? Ellis had a good game tonight. I personally wouldn't mind Ellis on the fourth line all year, but I definitely know where you're coming from (even if there was a bit of hyperbole).

We could have beat Philly, then Washington, and could have been in the ECF. We never really know, though.

I agree. That line had very good puck possession tonight.

Notes from the game:

ZOMG DID U C THAT HIT ON OVI BY REGIER?

Being at the game, I would like to add a few notes myself:

1) This team has even made the crowd apprehensive. Four goal lead and the place was silent aside from the last 4:30 of the game when the "Let's go Buff-a-lo" chant started.

2) I was not impressed with our effort. Yes, we won. But, the same old Sabres team was out there. We played to the Crapitals level. No spark, no flash...seemed quite apathetic. Had we played the same game we did tonight against a team like the Bruins, we would have been demolished.

3) I did not see the great game Stafford apparently played. Aside from the primary assist on the first goal, he could not clear the zone and did nothing spectacular. If someone could provide me with the footage of his greatness tonight, I would appreciate it.

4) I think McNabb has a promising future:)

5) I absolutely LOVED Regher's hit on Ovie. It was awesome!

6) The second period was absolutely painful to watch! 5 shots on goal by both teams.

7) Glad Matty Ellis scored. He plays hard despite his hands of stone.

Narcoleptic? Pretty sure they make a pill for that...

Just look at what a coaching change has done for the Blues. Under Hitchcock the Blues started 11-5 and are currently 4th in the West.

Losing Mike Green is a huge loss for the Caps. As for the rest of their roster, they really don;t have much beyond OV, Backstrom,Laich and a couple of defensemen. Washington, like the Sabres, are a team in need of a shakeup.

Had him assassinated. Damned shame that we have to get a new GM. Darcy went into hiding to avoid the Ruskies...

Pegula: I saw that! DR killed a guy! Did you throw a trident?

DR: Yeah, there were horses, and a man on fire, and I killedOvechkin with a trident!

Pegula: Darcy, I've been meaning to talk to you about that. You should find yourself a safehouse or a relative close by. Lay low for a while, because you're probably wanted for murder.
