spndnchz Posted December 21, 2011 Author Report Posted December 21, 2011 ya i dont understand why adam isnt back on the 1st line. when everyone is healthy id also like to see hecht between boyes and ennis. Adam was taken off the line to try to get others going. You can't have just one scoring line. It did work until Leino went out. Leino Adam Kassian was wheeling for a while.
Sabre Dance Posted December 21, 2011 Report Posted December 21, 2011 Hey! What's all this negativity? With Christmas just a few days off, let's count our blessings for all the positives: - A new owner for the team who has more money than ownership experience. - A brand-new, luxurious locker room along with a player lounge replete with espresso machine AND a fireplace! - Three new players brought in from teams that didn't win the Stanley Cup last season. - Darcy Regier and Lindy Ruff, version 2.0 (also known as "Darcy and Lindy (Financially Unshackled at Last!)) - The opportunity to see many of the team's AHL prospects and not even having to drive over to Rochester to do it! - A new team president who is doing an uncannily accurate impression of the previous team president. - No slug logo anywhere! (This alone should be worth at least 5 more wins this season). With all of these blessings, how can anyone out there in Sabreland be carping about a few losses here and there by our favorite team? Buck up! Wait until after the All Star break - things will REALLY get interesting! Merry Christmas, Happy Chanukah, and wishes for a happy and safe New Year!
wonderbread Posted December 21, 2011 Report Posted December 21, 2011 This is the worse sabres team ive seen in years. They cant pass, cant hit, cant stick up for themselfs, high paid players doin nothing, there offense of play is like waxing a floor with no ear buds. I hope one day terry p turns into a owner and not a fan because this team is going up in flames...Its hard to watch, it really is. :censored: :wallbash: :censored: :wallbash: :censored: :wallbash: :censored: Now that is an anology I have never hear before.

BuffaloSoldier2010 Posted December 21, 2011 Report Posted December 21, 2011 Why not? It's better than no scoring lines. The man makes a very convincing argument.
inkman Posted December 21, 2011 Report Posted December 21, 2011 Deserve's got nothing to do with it. Chills...love "Unforgiven".
Samson's Flow Posted December 21, 2011 Report Posted December 21, 2011 Why not? It's better than no scoring lines. I stand by my original statement at the beginning of the thread to which chz replied to with this. I'd rather have one consistent line building chemistry than wasting our time with no improvement during this slump. That way when/if players come back they only need to get chemistry with the bottom three lines, not the whole team.
LabattBlue Posted December 21, 2011 Report Posted December 21, 2011 Adam was taken off the line to try to get others going. You can't have just one scoring line. It did work until Leino went out. Samson's Flow Posted December 21, 2011 Report Posted December 21, 2011 We lost this game because of Weber. His mistake before the 2:1 costs us the game. Yeah he plays hard, but dumb. MAG: 30 games +11 Weber: 7 games -8 MAG also do some stupid mistakes, but when he is on the ice we seem to score more than we let in. This is something. And the new mixed lines looked terrible. I can not understand why the coaching staff has to mix also the working lines all the time. This needs to to change. I hope TPeg uses the emergency break in time. Touched by Boyes, on 20 December 2011 - 11:04 AM, said: mercury, on 20 December 2011 - 10:54 AM, said: Gragnani seems to be a popular whipping boy. While I don't feel one way or the other about him, I would like to hear his critics explain the fact that he currently leads the team in plus-minus by a healthy margin. You have to be careful when looking at purely quantitative analysis. While he does lead the team in +/-, it's important to look at it qualitatively as well. Someone posted a link earlier showing that most of MAG's playing time has come against the third liners of the other team, as well as powerplay time. By playing his pairing against the weakest opposition, you get a lower chance of being scored on and a higher chance of scoring compared to highly skilled opponents. It is the same argument as when Vanek was +47 a few years back playing on the third line of a stacked sabres team. When MAG is getting equal playing time as AHL call-ups (which includes his added PP time) that shows that he does not have the confidence of LR to play in all situations. Why must I keep reiterating that +/- means nothing if you don't watch the game. Stop pointing to MAG's +11 as a rationale to him being a good defenseman.

waldo Posted December 21, 2011 Report Posted December 21, 2011 Vanek doesn't get a shot on goal last night, does Roy being the center on that line have something to do with that ? :wallbash: Why Adam is not centering Vanek and Pommers is beyond me. As far as the Goose penalty, I didn't see it but I heard the TSN feed showed him smashing the Sens player (not Neil) in the face. A "core" veteran does not take that penalty with his team down by 1 with 3 minutes left in the 3rd. Goose got away with one in the 1st checking Winchester into the boards from behind causing a concussion. That will probably be looked by Shannahan, I don't think he'll do anything but I'm pretty sure he'll be looking at it. That is the way Lindy likes it. The way the ONE line is constructed is pure Lindy Ruff. It is not the best line possible on a slumping team but it is somehow pleasing to Lindy .. .Why not Adam , Boyes, Vanek..or Adam, Kassian Vanek or Leino, Kassian, Vanek or Hecht Kassian Vanek .. Why not size and staying power.????????????????????? We have to make sure that Thomas is always on the ice with a play small winger and or center.Children do not get better playing on the same line they play on in the AHL in the NHL. They get better playing with adults who are capable of teaching them the game at the NHL level. Was Adam performing better playing with Kassian or better playing with Vanek. Ask him?
Figster Posted December 21, 2011 Report Posted December 21, 2011 Is the idea supposed to be that if Gragnani played last night the Sabres would have won? I just don't see Gragnani as that type of difference maker. The Tyler Myers of three years ago would be even better. Myers of this season was no better than any other d-man they have been suiting up. I would still prefer having Myers out there on the ice working the kinks out of his game. The big fella has a huge upside and provides a much needed spark and shine to an otherwise lackluster Sabre lineup.
LabattBlue Posted December 21, 2011 Report Posted December 21, 2011 One note from last night's game... The first time Kassian, Foligno and McNabb are together as Sabres. Did they have one big hit combined, let alone two or three apiece? I know, I know...one game sample size does not make a career, but not what I envisioned when the three of them were drafted.

"While you are on the ice, score more goals than the other team. Period." Also. Weber's two minuses last night were a direct result of his horrible play.

Kassian and McNabb finished their checks, but nothing that could be classified as a "big hit." Foligno was clearly nervous in the first period but picked up his game starting in the second period. Those three definitely weren't the problem last night.

I didn't say they were the reason why the Sabres lost. Just my impression of their first NHL game together. PS Have you noticed since he has been up, how much Kassian peels away from a potential hit? If not, watch tomorrow. Kind of surprising considering his reputation, but it is what it is.

Stop pointing to MAG's +11 as a rationale to him being a good defenseman. I don't say he is a great defender or a good one, but i think he sucks less than Weber. Is the idea supposed to be that if Gragnani played last night the Sabres would have won? I just don't see Gragnani as that type of difference maker. . Of course not, that would have been another game. As i stated above, I think MAG is the better choice of two underperforming defenders. In this case Webers mistake cost us probably the game. He has an NHL heart combined with AHL talent ( just like Ellis). Leopold made two mistake for the first Ottawa goal, so he is to blame for this loss too. Generally the whole team and coaching staff is to blame, but this doesn't cool down the anger as good as blaming one or two players.

MAG has had plenty of WTF moments throughout the first 30 games, and Lindy just kept playing him. No reason that Weber shouldn't be offered the same opportunity to improve his play especially when considering he brings an element to the game that is currently only provided by Regehr.

Was Webers mistake any different than the captains missed assignment or the Sabres defenseman's unwillingness to put a hip on Spezza when he scored ? A game of mistakes. There are plenty to go around.Weber did not cost them the game. They scored ONE goal and gave up three.

This is what I was thinking last night, Kassian needs to be a force, with hits, fights, cheap shots, anything. We need a guy other teams fear. Kassian has turned into every other Sabre who would rather skate away from the rough stuff rather than initiate it. It's a shame.

qwksndmonster Posted December 21, 2011 Report Posted December 21, 2011 Three new players brought in from teams that didn't win the Stanley Cup last season. You wanted players specifically from the Bruins? Or were you just citing the fact that we didn't get Boston players as a positive? :P
SwampD Posted December 21, 2011 Report Posted December 21, 2011 They've also got three d-men with more points than any of our d-men. And yet everyone here wants to remove one of our D who is a plus 11(does that even factor in goals while on the powerplay, I can never remember) for one who has 0 goals and 0 assists. Go figure.
GloveSave Posted December 21, 2011 Report Posted December 21, 2011 And yet everyone here wants to remove one of our D who is a plus 11(does that even factor in goals while on the powerplay, I can never remember) for one who has 0 goals and 0 assists. Go figure. Players get a plus if they are on the ice for an even strength goal for, and a minus for an even strength goal against. No minus is given if your on for a shorthanded goal against...and no plus is given for a powerplay goal for. However, you do get a minus if you give up a shorty...and a plus if your team scores a shorty.
Samson's Flow Posted December 21, 2011 Report Posted December 21, 2011 I will never understand this thinking. Isn't the +/- the sole reason for why the game of hockey is played? "While you are on the ice, score more goals than the other team. Period." Also. Weber's two minuses last night were a direct result of his horrible play. We have to agree to disagree I guess. While team +/- is the sole reason for playing the game, individual +/- is based so much on chance of being on the ice and having nothing to do with the goal that is scored, for or against, that it is not a good indication of play level. Coupled with the fact, that as I stated earlier, this metric does not take into account the quality of opposition that the player is facing. MAG has a high +/- because he consistently plays against the other teams weakest line where the team as a whole has a higher chance of scoring and a higher chance of not letting in a goal. Does anyone want to argue that MAG is a better player than Regher based on a higher +/-? (who is matched up against the top line every game)
