nfreeman Posted January 7, 2012 Report Posted January 7, 2012 Lucius Vorenus. I'm a Roman History geek, so I probably liked it more than most people. The creators did a stunning job of recreating the city of Rome. The sets and costumes were on par with a major Hollywood movie. Unfortunately, the expense of accomplishing this is primarily what led to its early demise, as it was one of the most expensive shows ever made. It was a successful show by normal standards, but HBO pulled the plug halfway through season 2 because the cost was too much (which I'll never fully understand, since the major sets and costumes were already paid for by then  ). So the creators found out halfway through the second season that they only had til the end of that season to wrap the whole series up. The whole part about MarK Antony in Egypt with Cleopatra and Octavian's rise to power as the first Emperor Augustus was originally going to span the entire 3rd and 4th seasons, but had to be wrapped up in only 5 episodes. So understandably the second season suffered quite a bit as a result. What a shame, because as good as the show was it could have been SO much better. Good stuff. Thanks. The sets did indeed look amazing. BTW, I think I remember reading that Lucius Vorenus was a semi-fictional "composite" character, but I could be wrong on that. Last year you could see what a balanced group Pitt was and how balanced and smart Bylsma is. You could also see Washington having McPhee much like Darcy and the lack of passion in that room. I love Tortorella. I relate to him so much. He has the guts on television to call out the opponent in film session, "Oh...the media said they worked hard....oh they gave good effort....BS...they were dead in the water." He doesn't care! I love it. I have a new respect for Jagr. I like personalities but he is a smart guy. Giroux is one sneakily chippy SOB. On NY Rupp is just the definition of a crafty vet. You see how Torts defers to him at times? And how about when Del Zotto got suckered? First thing he does is asks the trainer "Who stepped up for me?" Hmmmnnnnn......I wonder if Millsie was watching? As for Philly....you think we are getting these speeches? "You take a little piss'n'vinegar into the game and go kick the sh!t out of the Penguins." After the past 2 years you can see why NY, Philly and Pitt are the better teams and why Washington fell apart. Agree entirely. I wish I would have seen last year's series. Lucic/Miller was the first thing I thought of when Del Zotto asked who stood up for him after he got suckered. I knew the Sabres' lack of response to that was an embarrassment to the game of hockey in general and to the franchise in particular, but hearing a bloodied rookie from another team wondering who had his back while being attended to by the trainer, really snapped that fiasco into perspective. Lucic/Miller was the seminal moment of the season to this point and it's no wonder the team hasn't recovered from that. Jagr is actually quite funnier than I imagined. Love it when he told the mother of his teammate (don't know who) as she was stumbling while trying to skate, "Hey, you skate just like your son." Great stuff. And yeah, Torts' style has been a revelation to me. I can see how a team could tune him out after a while. Especially a team of younger, less mature players who don't sell out like he asks them to. But he's got his team doing all the little things right and it's infectious. I wonder if Stafford would respond to him. I doubt it but then again, Torts would cut him rather than tolerate someone who doesn't sell out. At least that's the impression I get. I wish the guy well. GO SABRES!!! Yeah, if you saw last year, you would wonder why we didn't go after Talbot. He was a lot more subdoed this year on Philly, but he is new and they have a lot of personality on that team. I can only hope and pray Pegula and his family watched this series. I can't know for sure what is going on behind the scenes with the Sabres, but the way the Rangers and Flyers play on the ice and what is said in their rooms makes sense to me. I just can't see the same attitude coming from top down in our room. You even see the philosophy of Holmgren in Philly and how a guy like Schoenfeld is improving dirty lyrics at a team meeting when things are going wrong........do we have any of those strong personalities on this team at all? I can only go by results on the ice and what we hear in front of local media. HBO rocks. Good stuff here boys. I must point out though that del Zotto is in his 3rd season -- he's a classmate of Myers' in NHL years. Also, I'm pretty sure I read the same thing about the del Zotto/Miller comparison in a national NHL publication (I think it was Puck Daddy) in the last couple of days -- which I assume was just lifted from GoDD without attribution. That was a great scene with Schony.

Really....with Schony...Tororella is already about to go into a tizzy, then the film burns out and he is about to lose it.....and Schoenfeld jumps in to turn a tense situation into a teambuilding one. That's what the "it" factor is all about. Do you think Darcy or James Patrick could have pulled that off? I don't think comparing Del Zotto to Miller is a lift. That is a pretty obvious comparison. I always get a kick though when certain points get made in the media a little after discussions here. I am cool with that because at least there, someone is thinking it over or may even have the same thought themself and have more of a reason to say it. I've seen people run to Twitter with ideas, but in all honesty, we're talking hockey, not inventing a perpetual motion machine.
