Cereal Posted December 9, 2011 Report Posted December 9, 2011 This season it is. That is how many days there are from the 'official' close of training camps until the end of the regular season. (Sometimes it's 184 days long, sometimes 186, this year it appears to be 185.) Pre-season and post-season are separate beasts. Players get paid 1/185th of their NHL salary each day they are on the NHL roster (one of the regular 23 or on IR). Cool. So, while a player is suspended, are they allowed to practice with the team? In other words, if a player is suspended for 4 games, which will span the next 8 days, do they forfeit 4/185th or 8/185th of their salary? If the answer is 4/185th, it seems that they should be able to practice with the team during that time. If 8/185th, then not. Eh?

They still forfeit money each day, not just "play days".

I believe they are able to still practice and take part in team activities. The lost pay for 1st time offenders is a day's pay times each game suspended. For repeat offenders it is a game's pay times each game suspended. (So if this were Leino's 2nd suspension in 18 months, he'd've lost 1/82 of his salary.)

bunomatic Posted December 9, 2011 Report Posted December 9, 2011 Thats o.k. Leino could use a day off. Thats too bad though as he was starting to come around. Let that be a lesson to him.
sabre snipe Posted December 9, 2011 Report Posted December 9, 2011 Did anyone see malkin try and take giroux' head off tonight??? Same exact type of play as leinos, except luckily for giroux he saw it coming and ducked out of the way. I don't see how malkin can't receive the same punishment as Leino based on intent, but then again this is the NHL and shanahan, and were dealing with a star in malkin so my money is on no suspension
RazielSabre Posted December 9, 2011 Report Posted December 9, 2011 Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UX69UdAp2_U Just because Read didn't get injured does not mean that Leino should not get punished. That was such an obvious act that they are looking to get rid of. As someone said upthread, he deserves whatever he gets. Haha. meh. Token fine or suspension. That play was unacceptable and unnecessary.
kishoph Posted December 9, 2011 Report Posted December 9, 2011 Just heard on WGR that Ville Leino received a 1 game suspension. I agree with this, it may have not been a major blow, but it did look intentional. I'll post a link when I find one.

Sabres Fan in NS Posted December 9, 2011 Report Posted December 9, 2011 I have said it before and I will say it again ... the NHL is a garage league. Leino did get his elbow up and the hit could have been much worse. It seemed his intent was to hit elbow to head. All that being said my issue is ... how can the league suspend when no infraction was called on the ice at the time. With all the refs on the ice I find it hard to believe that none of them saw the play. Meanwhile, not even a hearing for the boarding of Gerbe. It just shows that the players really do have to police the play and let the chips fall where they may.
Drunkard Posted December 9, 2011 Report Posted December 9, 2011 I'd be ok with the Leino suspension if they also suspended the ###### that boarded Gerbe. Shanahan has absolutely zero consistency.
ROC Sabres Posted December 9, 2011 Report Posted December 9, 2011 Not saying this is worth a suspension but I thought it goes along the same lines about what a joke the NHL is. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5V-4L7l2Vi4 Why would Ovechkin hurt someone. He's never tried to hurt anyone before. :wallbash:

The hit on Gerbe definitively warrented a suspension. is Shanny flipping a coin on these decisions ?
Weave Posted December 9, 2011 Report Posted December 9, 2011 Donald Audette was always good for stuff like that. He publicly admitted to butt ending players that went hard at him along the boards. That was a pretty sneaky spear by Ovie. To be honest, I kind of like it for it's sneakery. And I like it even more that Neil got a little dirty play back at him. Live by the sword, die by the sword. And Neil clearly looks back at the ref just as he grabs his stomach and goes down. I'm thinking it was every bit as much dive as it was spear.

darksabre Posted December 9, 2011 Report Posted December 9, 2011 No...when your 5'7" forward is obstructed, he tends to lose control and blow his ankle out on a post and miss six weeks. When Jordan Tootoo is obstructed, he tends to run the goalie. When a 5 foot and change fella doesn't see a guy coming from behind, he is going to take it harder and his head hit a more precarious spot than say Gaustad who could probably catch himself or go to his knees. This play happens every game. I don't like it, but it only gets called when someone is hurt. Why don't we send these guys out in bubble wrap? Is there a rule against that? I'm sorry but you're just flat out wrong.

I am okay with the leino suspension but really feel the Gerbe hit should have at least applied the same. It sure does appear to be very arbitrary the way Shanny is going about this especially the way he goes to great lengths to explain his justification in the video.
korab rules Posted December 9, 2011 Report Posted December 9, 2011 It's amazing they gave Neil a penalty for diving. The hit on Gerbe definitively warrented a suspension. is Shanny flipping a coin on these decisions ? Is spearing Neil really a crime? Really?
inkman Posted December 9, 2011 Report Posted December 9, 2011 Maybe Shanahan can do us all a favour and suspend leino for the season? Not suspending him would hurt the Sabres more........ Stole my thunder. Bravo Apus! (I really like saying Apus) I don't care at all about the suspension but for Christs sake if your gonna get the chicken wing up, make sure you connect. This team finds new ways to look soft.
That Aud Smell Posted December 9, 2011 Report Posted December 9, 2011 Is spearing Neil really a crime? Really? no way that goes for supplemental - shanahan is in charge of eliminating plays that the league wants to get out of the game. :bag: also, i'd respectfully ask an admin to merge some of this thread with the "all about shanahan" thread. there's a lot of good stuff in here, but precious little about leino any more
RazielSabre Posted December 9, 2011 Report Posted December 9, 2011 1 game suspension, excellent news! Only way we'll see him out of a game... Lol. No in seriousness I think thats fair.
waldo Posted December 9, 2011 Report Posted December 9, 2011 Is spearing Neil really a crime? Really? should be a medal
FolignosJock Posted December 9, 2011 Report Posted December 9, 2011 anyone have a vid of this grebe hit?
