nfreeman Posted December 7, 2011 Report Posted December 7, 2011 Ryan Miller is 3-1 with a 1.71 GAA in games immediately after his fashion show. He has gone on streaks of: 6-2-1 5-0-1 3-3 3-0 after each fashion show. Millsie feels the endorphin rush of the catwalk! Outstanding. And who among us would be stunned to find out there were some fishnet stockings under those goalie pads? Oh please don't take that away from Ville Leino. He's worked so hard to earn that status. Fair enough, but I was expecting Leino to be more of a "glue guy" who contributed to offense but didn't put up big numbers. I also realized that UFAs always cost a bit too much and almost always take a while to find their way on a new team, new system, new coach, new city, etc. So I guess I wasn't expecting a huge year from Leino. OTOH, I thought Stafford had matured and turned the corner last year and was ready to become a consistent 30+ goal power forward. I guess I needed to eliminate everything except the "forward" part.
Kristian Posted December 7, 2011 Report Posted December 7, 2011 He's been maybe the biggest disappointment of the year so far. I think he's hustling but it seems like he's completely lost his mental sharpness in being able to finish opportunities as well as decision-making. I think I get what your saying, but really - Wasn't last season, a season out of the ordinary for Stafford? Isn't the current Stafford the one we've seen some 65-80% of the time he's been here? I have a hard time being disappointed, seeing as this is exactly what I expected from him.
That Aud Smell Posted December 7, 2011 Report Posted December 7, 2011 Briere and Hartnell went to school together. so awesome. i saw that the local paper did a piece today on home woes -- i didn't read it. the team really, really needs to get right at home; that win against the caps must be severely discounted in retrospect. so, when's the last time they played a good home game? against the senators when they came out flying and chased the goalie (on 11/11/11)?
wonderbread Posted December 7, 2011 Report Posted December 7, 2011 Outstanding. And who among us would be stunned to find out there were some fishnet stockings under those goalie pads? Hopefully no leather assless chaps.

I can't argue with any of this. I just thought it was going to be different. I think I still see more determination and maturity in his game -- driving hard to the net, delivering some hits, playing fairly well on the PK -- but the offensive production, which is what the team really needs from him, is undeniably absent.
carpandean Posted December 7, 2011 Report Posted December 7, 2011 Good post. As for Vanek, I can't seem to find his average TOI. It isn't in the stats section on sabres.com. Anyone know how much ice time he's getting in relation to the team because if there is one glaring Lindy issue I see it's that I don't seem to see Thomas on the ice enough, especially on 5 on 5 play. Is this just in my head? I missed this earlier, but wanted to respond anyway. There was a discussion last year about Vanek's ice time and production rates (goals/min) as compared to Ovechkin. I broke it all down over several seasons and found that, basically, he is among the league's best in PP G/min (better than Ovi), but pretty average in ES G/min. I don't know if that has changed much in the last year or not, but up to that point, he didn't show much to suggest that more 5 on 5 time was the way to go. I should note, however, that he completely changed his SO status from total dud to total stud, so you always have to take stats with a grain of salt.
Robviously Posted December 7, 2011 Report Posted December 7, 2011 Yes , he is getting more ice time now than Lindy has given him in most years (new ownership and Lindy does not have to show them how much he hated the deal) . The problem is staying in the offensive zone 5x5 against the other teams best defense, with wingers and centers who are not great on the boards or physical, and getting as many scoring , playmaking chances and touches as possible for your best offensive threat. Who has played now for four years without a playmaking physical center. Adam with that line was just a peek at what a playmaking physical center means. Now find one that is better than a rookie who plays with his head down, and passes / sees the ice like a rookie. Throw more net juice into the mix. Adam Vanek , Kassian or something similar that permits you to stay in the zone against a shutdown line. For the other posters. I like Vanek but he goes down under pressure more often than a hooker on a Navy payday. He needs to go to Jagr school. I am sorry but right now the book says he is just average He's averaging more than a point per game this season and five goals in seven games during last year's playoffs. Unless injuries get in the way, he's on track to have 400 goals in his career. This is an "average" player to you? If Vanek is average, that means literally every other player on the Sabres roster at every position is below average.

I wish we'd traded him last year or last summer when his value was high.

I'm still hoping that he gets back to focusing on his game, and less on making funny videos, and playing the guitar.
Ghost of Dwight Drane Posted December 7, 2011 Report Posted December 7, 2011 I drank the same kool-aid. I'm still hoping that he gets back to focusing on his game, and less on making funny videos, and playing the guitar. Stafford on another team can be that guy. That's the thing...this is the 6th year running there has been nobody on this team to show him what to do. I've argued for years that if you had that ONE leader who can score, scrap, and keep the kids in line, guys like Stafford, Gaustad and Roy would be much more effective. Vanek as well. There was a time where Derek Roy went into the corners on just about every shift and played like Gerbe. That year was 2006 on a wing with Drury.

It deserves to be graphed in the "chart" thread!
darksabre Posted December 7, 2011 Report Posted December 7, 2011 Hopefully no leather assless chaps. All chaps are assless.

He is the best player on the team, hands down, only average on the puck on the boards in the offensive zone.
ROC Sabres Posted December 7, 2011 Report Posted December 7, 2011 All chaps are assless. Not these chaps. Most certainly@$$e$..

waldo Posted December 7, 2011 Report Posted December 7, 2011 I understand what your going with but unfortunately I don't think that Centerman we need to play tough and play the first line is on our roster. Goes back to our need at that position. Unfortunately there are very few guys that fit this bill in next year's free agency list. Darcy is going to have to earn his keep and pull of a deal. We are pretty set on D in the farm right now so moving one of them might be the answer. Sorry, I know this is a GDT, didn't mean to get too far off topic. I am the one who took the topic off the string title so i can take the heat from our keeper.. The point was that watching Adam with his size, ability to go to the net and use his size on the boards is a glimpse of what that line can be with a real physical playmaking center.(which Adam is not) Then, Lindy takes it apart to see other combos, which i understand. and never puts it back together?? If you want to experiment add some staying power with offense on the Pom side . Thats the point. When was the last time the Sabres had a big scoring line that could camp out in the o zone of the better teams? Keeping Vanek in the zone and giving him touches is the point. They accumulated most of those 5x5 goals with Adam.....

kishoph Posted December 8, 2011 Report Posted December 8, 2011 I would love to see the Sabres really take it to the Flyers, I've hated the Flyers since the 70's.
frissonic Posted December 8, 2011 Report Posted December 8, 2011 Get to listen to the GR feed via TuneIn since I'm gonna be stuck at work until 8 my time. Just a gut feeling, but I'm *stoked* for this game. Not sure why. As an aside, I have no wings, no pizza, no nothin'. Just a Coke Zero and a few packets of Kellogg's mixed berry fruity snacks. This, quite possibly, could be the worst hockey meal ever.
papazoid Posted December 8, 2011 Report Posted December 8, 2011 Roy said on Versus that they practiced really hard this week.... does that imply they usually don't ??
Iron Crotch Posted December 8, 2011 Report Posted December 8, 2011 Yeah, Staff... maybe he's decided to play more physical tonight?
