Dorlack Posted November 29, 2011 Report Posted November 29, 2011 I just wanted to get everyone's opinion. Perhaps Lindy's coaching is to blame here? I am a huge fan of Lindy and would hate to see him leave, but it seems like it just might not be working anymore.

I am a huge fan of Lindy and would hate to see him leave, but it seems like it just might not be working anymore. I feel Lindy is an excellant coach and, therefore, I don't blame his coaching, but ... I seems that ever since Lindy was, at least he appears to have been, appointed (in a very "banana republic" kind of way) coach for life (same with the GM) ... The players, who know they are safe no matter what, ... have tuned him out. I do think that in any other NHL town both Lindy and Darcy would have been run out of Dodge a long time ago.

Ok, so the longtime Sabres players keep hearing Ruff's message, and yet can't play consistently. Then against the Caps we have nine newbies on the team and they follow instructions to the 'T', and we have a convincing win. So if the older players are tuning out Ruff, is that Ruff's fault, or the few bad apples in the bushel?

I agree they likely would have been run out of town a long time ago in any other NHL city, but most coaches/GMs wouldn't have wanted to work under the constraints these two had to work under for more than a decade, either. Which players are "safe" and exactly who has tuned out Ruff?
Cereal Posted November 29, 2011 Report Posted November 29, 2011 With the two firings yesterday, it got me to thinking: If Lindy was axed, who would replace him? Are there no obvious candidates?

korab rules Posted November 29, 2011 Report Posted November 29, 2011 The "core" and the "core". No - who specifically is tuning Ruff out? By name. Is it Vanek - who is playing the best hockey of his career? Is it Pommers - who is playing the best hockey of his career? Is it Roy - who was playing the best hockey of his carreer before the injury last year, started slow due to injury, but has been playing like his hair is on fire lately? Is it Goose who has been playing the best hockey of his career? Is it Staff - who played the best hockey of his career last year, is in a slump, but is still driving the net hard and added size and a bit of a physical edge to his game this season? Who else is a memeber of the core? Who by name do you feel has tuned Ruff out?
korab rules Posted November 29, 2011 Report Posted November 29, 2011 Boudreau and Maurice are available. Jack Del Rio and his axe are also available. Just be sure to stand back. We could put a big Sabres branded log in the center of the locker room. Team building and conditioning all in one

So if the older players are tuning out Ruff, is that Ruff's fault, or the few bad apples in the bushel? Good opinion, but you also have to consider how hungry the young players are who are fighting to stay on the sabres. It could of been the drive to stay on the team that led to a big win. Which leads to why can't we have our veterans have the same drive to be the best team and win every game. I thinks that is the coaches job, along with chemistry. But its not for me to say. I also like Lindy but do contemplate other options.....
bills_fan_in_raleigh Posted November 29, 2011 Report Posted November 29, 2011 If we hired Maurice people would be begging for Lindy in no tim. Yeah he might be a fresh voice but his style of play is boring. He lost the Canes lockeroom.

Washington barely showed up, and the newbs took advantage. Good for them, but don't think the result would have been the same against Boston. I agree on all your points ... There is one other that you have not named. Don't play games. Who else? I think it is strange that you make a statement, and then agree with the person who disagrees with your statement.

You are not showing 100% drive and commitment every time you are on ice!" when I know that I don't bring my A-game to work every single day. And I know that these guys carry the hopes of millions, and get paid in millions too, so the expectations are different, but they are still human. What the whole Lucic fiasco and blowout games did show though is that in times of adversity, there is little teamwork and leadership, from the players or the coaching. If we go into a 3rd period behind, as fans we can only pray for a miracle to tie the game. I don't see the players showing that they 'want' to win, some sort of steely resolve and grim determination. We keep getting hit by adversity after another, and keep hoping that this one will be the turning point.. but we are yet to see it.
Marine0369 Posted November 29, 2011 Report Posted November 29, 2011 I'm not able to read lips so I'm not sure what Lindy is saying after every shift to the core players. I do know that here in Buffalo Nathan Gerbe has no problem laying a body on guys twice his size. In washington, Ovechkin has had no problem doing the same. Even crybaby Crosby embraces the physical side of the game. When is Capatain Pommers going to lead by example? Leading a team is about more than scoring. We proved that hitting is used to knock guys off the puck, out of the play and to control the game. So then why do I always see our poor excuse for a captain throw a weak poak check at an opponent and rarely ever lay a body. He is the excuse for every player on this team that does not hit. For all of you that ask after every game "why was gerbe/kaleta/rookie our best player?" It's because they see pommers work ethic and go the opposite direction. Bottom line is I think Ruff wants this team to hit more and by having a pu@@y like Pomminstein not hitting, it undermines his authority and credibility with guys that have been here as long as him. The rookies listen to him because they want to make the team. And he knows hockey.
ROC_exEMT Posted November 29, 2011 Report Posted November 29, 2011 I agree on all your points ... There is one other that you have not named. Miller perhaps?

I am a huge fan of Lindy and would hate to see him leave, but it seems like it just might not be working anymore. I'm confused as to the question - "Blamed" for what exactly? What might not be working anymore? The team's inconsistency? Perceived softness? Can't win at home? Number of injuries? Lack of enthusiasm by the fans? What do you think was working before that no longer is?

You want to say that leading a team is about more than scoring but it's also about more than hitting. There is absolutely no problem with Pominville's current contributions to this team. edit: Take a look at the top scorers list in the NHL right now (which contains multiple captains, by the way) and then look at their hit stats. Now ask yourself if any of these teams are currently complaining about those players.
Marine0369 Posted November 29, 2011 Report Posted November 29, 2011 Pommers has never been a hitter.. then why would Ruff have named him Captain? Thats just it. The guy has talent but think how much more productive he would be if he was knocking guys off the puck more and then feeding it to Vanek. I'm not saying he has to drill someone through the boards. I would love to see a guy with Gerbe's heart and pommers skill all in one. You can't teach skill but you can learn how to be more physical. As far as why he is Captain, I have to be honest. I don't know why. Personally I would have liked Gaustad because he stands out more. If you made a bone head play who would you take heed from more in the locker room and on the bench? Pomminstein or Gaustad. Goose doesn't have his talent but he's not going to lay a one handed poke check on a guy in the corners then skate away.

brandonmp15 Posted November 29, 2011 Report Posted November 29, 2011 Pommers has never been a hitter.. then why would Ruff have named him Captain? Maybe because he is arguably the best two way player we have on this team? Some one who plays just as well in the defensive zone as he does in the the other end.

Some one who plays just as well in the defensive zone as he does in the the other end. Go back and look at the context of what I said. I have no problem with Pommers as captain; I was refuting the point that Marine had made saying that Ruff wants the Sabres to play physical hockey, because it would be counterintuitive for Ruff then to make Pommers captain if he wanted the Sabres to hit more. Bottom line is I think Ruff wants this team to hit more and by having a pu@@y like Pomminstein not hitting, it undermines his authority and credibility with guys that have been here as long as him. Really? Don't the Sabres have enough guys on the BF-LTIR list already? Do we really need to add the Captain to that list? Do you also think that Datsyuk should be laying people out more often? Heilig scheisse. Ich verstehe wieder warum ich nicht sehr oft hier absenden.
