So Enroth is going to go from very good goalie to below average goalie just like that? Doubt it. Its hard to win 13 straight games for anyone, let alone someone who is a would-be imposter...

Didn't Marty pull off a run of 13 in a row when Miller hurt his thumb some years back?

I think it was 10 but yeah, he did. I think it was back in 05-06.

I thought it was a bunch more then just 10. I remember it being a big deal, and at the time, there were plenty here thinking goalie controversy

It was 05-06.

It was 11 straight games with a win. 13 games if you call it "not losing in regulation". The one that stopped the streak at 11 was a shootout loss.

the latest is that miller is suffering from headaches, a sore neck -- he (and a doctor?) basically called it whiplash.

now, i wish our guy nothing but the best, i perceive him as our #1 (not our #1A), i hoot and holler for him at the center and at home when he makes a key save, and i would never be among the boo birds when he struggles ... with that said, i will admit that, on seeing "whiplash," i immediately pictured fans in boston taunting him by wearing those puffy white neck braces, the next time we're in boston. even worse, there was something about that anticipated gesture that made me crack a small smile. i will blame it on my inner 15 year-old.

Are you insinuating he has a case of The Chz Whiplash?

So no goalie controversy; that was just when Miller was beginning to establish himself as a starter. The team started that year with the "three-headed goalie monster," right?

That's not my point at all. Much like baseball pitchers which are studied by hitters, goalies are studied by shooters. Many pitchers look great the first time through the league before they cool off when the hitters learn their tendencies.

Last year it took about about 20 starts for teams to figure out that James Reimer had trouble moving back against the play. That doesn't make Reimer a bad goalie. It just made him look average after a phenomenal start.

I like Enroth. He might go another 10 games, he might go all year, but when teams look like crazy for a weakness to exploit they find something. Shooters usually figure out goalies before the goalies figure themselves out.

Steve Mason is probably the best example of a goalie that never quite adjusted after shooters solved him.

That's my point.

No, you are just trying to take any angle against Enroth in hopes that Miller becomes the unquestioned #1 again. It is so obvious this is bothering the ###### helll out of you that Miller even has a challenge from somebody for the #1( you have said the same thing in how many different threads). Why do you think Miller liked Lalime soooo much? Job security! I think so! It is just a matter of time before Enroth is the established #1.

I'm all for playing the better player. I have believed for a while that the Sabres could improve the goaltender position and it looks to me like they are finally doing that.

It's all about winning the games not playing favorites, which oh so many don't seem to understand.

The Rat wants back in:

@MattBarnabyESPN: Do it 4 free RT "@peteshelly: Hey Barnaby, what could the Sabres offer you to lace 'em back up and give the team a backbone?”

In talking with a few friends the topic of Miller retiring after this came up. I will say definitively that I think Miller is/was the #1 and deserved to be the #1. He has been excellent for the Sabres both from a marketing standpoint (No way they get prime-time games if he isn't huge in the 2010 Olympics) and on the ice over his career. That being said, I don't think the NHL really careers about head injuries. Perhaps suspensions were leavied in the preseason for some of the more boarderline plays because the only attention the league was garnering surrounded the absence of Crosby. Think about it, the biggest name in American and Canadian hockey are now on the shelf with the same injury on boarderline hits with no suspensions. Breaking another players stick is equivalent to the check Miller took according to the "policy makers" at the NHL. In any other league does that happen?

I think Miller retiring would add another dimension to this debate, especially if a feeling of further head trauma was used as an explanation. I figure that since the guy has earned plenty of money, just got married, owns a business, and just sustained his second concussion in 8 months that perhaps there is an argument. Given that this board seems split about 50/50 on Miller and his skill set these days, I assume some wouldn't mind seeing it happening.

If I had to wager, my guess is that he gives this idea no thought and looks to get back in as soon as possible. However, I at least think it would be interesting to speculate on what type of reaction a high profile retirement like this would acheive.

If you would have actually read, considered and understood X's point, you wouldn't have responded in such a way. Do you disagree that the league adjusts itself to new talent, at which point the player in question must adjust in turn?

This process occurs regardless of the final result. Enroth may prove to be the next Hasek. To use X's example, he may become the next Steve Mason. In either case, the league WILL adjust. It's an efficiently cruel ecosystem, the NHL.

GM's talk about the hit.

"No rules were tabled, but the suggestion seemed to be that the next person to take a run as liberal as the one Lucic took at Miller might not escape without supplemental discipline."

Let what Lucic did be an example to us all: you can get away with anything once.

Should I feel dirty now that I actually like Kerry Frasier? He reminds me of when a politician retires and then can final be himself and joke around on the late night shows. His column on TSN has been a very good read right from day 1.

I made the same comment to my brother. I feel dirty admitting that I agreed with his article (and that it was a pretty well written one to boot).

Not making excuses for Lalime as he was not good at all after the lockout towards the end of his career.

He did win 200 NHL games, not that bad! Could be worse.

He was 167-112 pre lockout and 33-62-16 post lockout. Old age set in maybe?

He started 14-0-2 and Enroth is similar. I would be ok with 200 wins from Enroth, Miller and Hasek only have a few more than that.

I think that was a big part of it. He had issues with pretty much every major part south of the chest - back surgery, hip injury, groin injury, knee injury...tough to pop up and down and move side to side when everything you use - legs, hips, core - is hurting or rebuilt.

That was one of the things the Leafs were saying about Reimer's inury symptoms. First it was "got his bell rung" then "whiplash" then "concussion-like symptoms". Who knows where the truth is.
