donteatyellowsnow Posted November 9, 2011 Report Posted November 9, 2011 Tropp. I like Ellis, he works hard, high motor, few mistakes, but he has no talent what so ever. Maybe if he dropped them once and a while, but he really doesn't even do that. Gotta go with Tropp.
Calvin Posted November 9, 2011 Report Posted November 9, 2011 Tropp has more offensive upside down than Ellis.. and possibly even Kaleta. Last season Adam was quite ineffective when playing with the bottom six. Look what happened to him this year. If Tropp continues to be responsible defensively and keeps playing well, I'd like to see him start challenging for a spot on the top three lines. He's most likely not ready to be up here permanently, but it wouldn't hurt for him to get the experience now.
Weave Posted November 9, 2011 Report Posted November 9, 2011 I thought that after an AHLer plays his tenth game of the season, he then has to pass waivers to go back and forth to the NHL? There are three items that determine when a player is waiver eligible, age when the player signed his first contract, number of seasons as a pro, and NHL games played. I don't have the current numbers at my fingertips but Tropp is a 2nd year pro who played no NHL games last season so he's got plenty of NHL playing time left before we have to worry about waivers for him. I don't think he'll cross the threshold this season even if he stays up for the remainder of the schedule.
beerme1 Posted November 9, 2011 Report Posted November 9, 2011 I voted Tropp. He may be an NHL'er. I know for fact that Matt is not and cant believe we are being subjected to him again. No offense against the guy but surely to god there is better talent available than him. He has no purpose on a team with champagne wishes and caviar dreams. Again no knock on him but I know what I got with him and I don't want it. I don't know what I have in Tropp but what I have seen I like. Did you see him in the Ottawa game stick up for a teamate and challenge Calvin Neil? Neil brushed him aside with a quick kid this isn't about you type of deal. Made a great impression on me. Matt Ellis is good for an expansion team maybe. Not ours.
SwampD Posted November 9, 2011 Report Posted November 9, 2011 The sabres are something like 78ish-55ish when Matt Ellis plays (yes, I know it's ridiculous to know this but I was bored at work one day and looked it up). It has nothing to do with discussion, but that's a pretty good record.
spndnchz Posted November 9, 2011 Report Posted November 9, 2011 Tropp, hes young, has a future on this team, and hes development is more important than anything Ellis brings... I would keep him up but if he starts to edge closer to being Waiver eligible send him back down, he will get more ice time in Rochester. I don't think he'll cross the threshold this season even if he stays up for the remainder of the schedule. Tropp has 78 games to go before he's subject to "the waiver". And FWIW, we now have 24 players on the roster with one on IR (Hecht) if Hecht comes back someone's got to go down. Ellis would have to clear waivers and re-entry if he ever came back up. Tropp doesn't. As much as I like Tropp over Ellis, it ain't happening. You'll see Tropp up here from time to time but not on the 'permanent' roster this year.
brandonmp15 Posted November 9, 2011 Report Posted November 9, 2011 I voted Tropp, but think Ellis should be the one to stay. As everyone else has said he is the safer bet, and also Tropp needs to develop more so he will be back in Rochester until we need another call up.

It'll most likely be Ellis that stays up. It is the way Lindy works. But I don't think that there is much risk of Ellis being picked up on waivers if he were sent down. That 6 figure one-way contract hit for next season is essentially a poison pill for any team wanting to pick him up.

That would lighten the $525,000 next year.

LastPommerFan Posted November 9, 2011 Report Posted November 9, 2011 remainder of the contract The avery effect.
wjag Posted November 9, 2011 Report Posted November 9, 2011 I'd give the nod to Ellis... He has worked his tail off to be on the club.
spndnchz Posted November 9, 2011 Report Posted November 9, 2011 The avery effect. Yup. Interesting tidbit here. If someone had claimed Avery on re-entry waivers by the NYR they would have to pay only 25% of his salary/cap hit. Stars already pay 50% and are stuck with it.

Not that I would want Avery on this team but it would have been nice to contribute to sticking it to both the Rags, and the Stars.
qwksndmonster Posted November 10, 2011 Report Posted November 10, 2011 Not that I would want Avery on this team but it would have been nice to contribute to sticking it to both the Rags, and the Stars. Not even close to worth it, IMO.

It has nothing to do with discussion, but that's a pretty good record. And 3-0 with Tropp. Also, I had no idea that Ellis had played ~130 games with the Sabres. Wow. I'd give the nod to Ellis... He has worked his tail off to be on the club. That's the thing that bugs me. As above, I wouldn't hesitate to cut him in favor of Tropp (or someone else), but Ellis's heart and ethic are beyond question. He just doesn't have the skill IMO.

spndnchz Posted November 10, 2011 Report Posted November 10, 2011 Chris Neil having an ankle issue and not traveling with the team to Buffalo. Admit it Chris, your scared of Troppic Thunder!
MattPie Posted November 10, 2011 Report Posted November 10, 2011 F*ck it, I'll take Tropp. If for no other reason than that I like to say Tropp Gun. There's a Goose and Tropp Gun RJ call in that somewhere.
Cereal Posted November 10, 2011 Report Posted November 10, 2011 Maybe this was mentioned in one of the recent broadcasts... Had any Sabre ever donned #78 before Tropp? Does anyone have any source of the Sabres' jersey number history? I remember a couple years ago when one of the Habs (maybe a Kostitsyn?) donned #84, it was the last number 1 through 99 to finally be worn for a Canadien. This kind of stuff is interesting, I'd like to see some Sabres history on it.

And I definitely yelled out "BRUUUUUCE" when Tropp got that goal.

It's a first. http://www.sabresalumni.com/history/numbers.php Edit: That site is somewhat obsolete; Tyler Myers, for example, is not listed at all. But it's pretty accurate. The media guide has traditionally listed sweater numbers as well, and I believe that's now available free online at the Sabres' official site.

The full media guide is here: http://sabres.nhl.com/club/page.htm?id=36389 Edit: This list, of course, is up-to-date, or at least I assume.. And the jersey number history is in fact displayed on pages 2-4 of the History section - linked above and here: http://downloads.sabres.nhl.com/other/201112MediaGuide/1112-MediaGuide-6.pdf Comments: Should Kassian play for the Sabres and use the same number that he uses for the Amerks, he would be the first #54. Foligno would be the first #71, but apparently Jochen has donned that number as a Sabre???
