sabresfan36 Posted October 30, 2011 Report Posted October 30, 2011 I know it may seem like the usual bitc-hen but is seems like the sabres have been on the short end of many calls. The last few years it seemed to be the other way around. Anyone think it has to do with the refs having a different perception on the club now that they are a so called "big money" team?

IMO the officiating is just going through a period when they are bringing in a lot of inexperienced guys. The league needs a better way of judging the officials work and rewarding more or less work based on how well they do.
BetweenThePipes00 Posted October 30, 2011 Report Posted October 30, 2011 This is a question for the refs on the board (I know there are a couple) and not a gripe with the outcome of the game ... On the extra 2 given to Gerbe, isn't that usually a 10 minute misconduct as opposed to an extra minor? Wasn't surprised he gave Gerbe something but was stunned it was a minor. No conspiracy crap, just curious what the guideline is for 2 or 10.
Eleven Posted October 30, 2011 Report Posted October 30, 2011 There's already a thread on this, started earlier tonight.

No conspiracy crap, just curious what the guideline is for 2 or 10. That's a good question. I was watching at a bar without volume, and I saw Gerbe really giving it to the ref. They went to commercial I believe, and when they came back they were showing at him yipping again from the box. I said "I bet he gives him a 10". Then when Florida scored, I didn't know if it was a shortie or a PP because I didn't know what the deal was between the boarding and the Gerbe situaton. Seemed crazy for a 2 minute deal. The refs give Gerbe a lot of breaks though because he is small. I love his fire after the whistle, but he really does get a break because if a 6'2" guy was doing the same stuff he does to protect his turf, he'd be suspended by now.
BetweenThePipes00 Posted October 30, 2011 Report Posted October 30, 2011 Sorry 11, the other thread just looks like a lot of yelling at each other. Ghost, i agree gerbe gets some slack and he definitely was not subtle about his displeasure ... But we've seen worse not called at all and when it is called it is 10. Again, i want to hear from a ref because my impression has always been that kind of offense does not affect manpower as the other team was not fouled, so to speak. But i could be way off ... Maybe this guy called it right for once.
BetweenThePipes00 Posted October 30, 2011 Report Posted October 30, 2011 Perhaps it is a "point of emphasis" this season because i just looked at the Caps-Canucks box score and Semin got 2 for hooking and 2 for abuse of officials tonight also. Although Gerbe's was called unsportsmanlike conduct ... That's semantics.

cwater10 Posted October 30, 2011 Report Posted October 30, 2011 There's already a thread on this, started earlier tonight. Hey... didn't I see you at the arena last night... dressed in black and white stripes? Sincerely, Nate
Marvelo Posted October 30, 2011 Report Posted October 30, 2011 I'm appalled at how Stafford and Gerbe were yapping at the refs after getting whistled. I thought at least Gerbe would be above that. I don't care if the refs are wrong. They'll be right most of the time. Just shut up and play and come back even harder.
nfreeman Posted October 30, 2011 Report Posted October 30, 2011 There's already a thread on this, started earlier tonight. Indeed. IMHO 2 threads on this BS topic is 2 too many. Grow up already. "The refs" haven't given the Sabres any losses this year. The Sabres earned those all by themselves.

I am still curious if they are calling it different though since I can count on one hand how many minors for unsportsmanlike/abuse of officials i remembr since the lockout and yet last night it was called twice in separate games. Believe me, when it was the opponent yapping i wanted it as opposed to 10, not saying anyone got jobbed here, it's a legit call.

I am not arguing whether or not Gerbe or Stafford were in the right or wrong for talking back to the refs. And yes it disappoints me a bit that they would do that ... but really, nobody ever talked back to the refs before (exaggeration I know)? Because I don't recall seeing penalties for it unless the player really started goin' at it with a ref.

Well Stafford got NOTHING for yapping at the ref, his penalty was for the retaliation for the hit on Leopold. And he went at him quite a bit more than Gerbe, I thought .... which may have played into the second call ... just the ref saying enough is enough.
darksabre Posted October 31, 2011 Report Posted October 31, 2011 Who called the police? ???????????????????? You're like that guy who is somehow always at the bar hanging around a group of friends who deliberately avoided informing him that they were going to the bar, because it's not that he's not a nice person, it's just that whenever he opens his mouth, awkward and embarrassing things always come out.

Sabre Dance Posted October 31, 2011 Report Posted October 31, 2011 I have no idea why Devorski decided to slap Gerbe with an extra 2. Gerbe by no means was screaming at or otherwise abusing Devorski. All I can think of is that Gerbe may have been needling Devorski for the entire game and Gerbe saying anything after that call was the straw that broke the ref's back. The best way to get your point across to the refs is low key, matter-of-fact conversation not questioning every call and constantly pushing them to call penalties. Just as an example, I heard a story a long time ago about Gordie Howe getting his point across to a referee (it may have been Bill Friday; that fact is lost in the dim recesses of my mind). A lot of calls by the ref were going against the Red Wings one night. Howe glided up to the ref and said, "You know, you're the second best referee in the league." The ref said, "Thanks - who's the best?". Howe quipped, "Everybody else." I kind of follow the same principle. I rarely swear (out loud) unless I am with close friends and hardly ever in public. At work one day, I got really angry at a caller to my support line. After I got off the phone, I reeled off a long string of profanities. One of my co-workers stared at me, open-mouthed, and said that I must have really been angry as they had never heard me swear before. I guess it makes it much more effective...

According to the Buffalo News article, Gerbe was laughing at the call, the ref said "don't laugh at me" and then slapped the extra 2 on. Either way, I thought both calls were weak <_< just like most of the play during the game...
korab rules Posted October 31, 2011 Report Posted October 31, 2011 If they don't have a letter on their chest they aren't supposed to speak to the refs period. Refs have been handing out unsportsmanlike minors for chirping as long as the game has been played, not 10 minute misconducts. They usually warn you before they do so. We don't get to the hear the ref's side of things. Would be nice to. I would bet my last dollar there was a lot more to it than laughing. Stafford has a letter on his chest - maybe that's why the situations were treated differently.
