Tyrannustyrannus Posted October 29, 2011 Report Posted October 29, 2011 It seems to me that Kaleta has a target painted on his back lately for wearing a visor. I understand that he's a pest, but he has a right to wear a visor to protect himself from sticks and pucks. He shouldn't have to take off his helmet if Steve Downie or Cody Bass jumps him from behind. Kaleta didn't instigate either one of those fights. I guess for all the things you could let Kaleta get under your skin for, wearing a visor should be low on the list. Thoughts?
Weave Posted October 29, 2011 Report Posted October 29, 2011 I'm not interested in denigrating any player for wearing a visor. Rather, I think any player that doesn't wear one is taking a foolish risk. Having said that, *IF* (big important word) given the opportunity, Kaleta should remove his helmet every time he fights. However, if he gets jumped, all bets are off and you just drop 'em and swing with the lid in place.
Captain Caveman Posted October 29, 2011 Report Posted October 29, 2011 If he instigates a fight, the visor should come off. Otherwise, he's got every right to wear it.
inkman Posted October 29, 2011 Report Posted October 29, 2011 If he instigates a fight, the visor should come off. Otherwise, he's got every right to wear it. Nailed it.
Tyrannustyrannus Posted October 29, 2011 Author Report Posted October 29, 2011 If he instigates a fight, the visor should come off. Otherwise, he's got every right to wear it. and since its in his nature to be a pest and not actually instigate a fight, that will probably not happen. I was so glad he got that goal the other night.
DumbPuck Posted October 29, 2011 Report Posted October 29, 2011 Agree with each of the posts above me. The way I see it, Kaleta has built a pretty interesting dynamic for himself. Most players in the league hate him for how he has acted over the previous X years of his career. Now, he is wisening up and seeing that that style of player is vanishing in the NHL so he is going to clean up his game. However, much of the league's players don't forget the old Kaleta that easily... funny how his 'getting under their skin' in the past allows him to intrinsically do so today. He doesn't even need to instigate fights, as we saw last night they will come to him. And he gets to wear a visor to boot ... I love it :-).

I think he is just trying to add longevity to his career. Some of the young'uns down on the farm can fill his role & I think he knows it.

I'm pretty sure Kaleta is still actively, overtly, working to get under opponents skin. Both vocally and physically. That mess with Bass started when Kaleta crosschecked Rick Nash. And he appears to be a rather mouthy little bugger. He may not be throwing borderline charge hits every shift anymore, but I'm pretty certain he is still actively goading on opponents. Not that there is anything wrong with that. But if you are actively goading opponents and you are wearing a visor, well..... I think you are bound to draw criticism.
X. Benedict Posted October 29, 2011 Report Posted October 29, 2011 Visors in fights are reality at every level. Kaleta hits and talks smack. He has to fight occaissionally just for integrity for the 9 out of 10 times he's going to skate away. The fighting is the byproduct of his style. Not the purpose in itself. Visor is good with me.

I know Kaleta is out there talking trash non-stop. However, I don't see him ever actively seeking fights. I think there is a big difference between being the annoying fly in the arena and being the 'bruiser' dropping the gloves left and right. I also realize that Kaleta never fully embodied the latter. But I definitely remember him actively seeking fights, and not just talking trash, in the past. I think it's fine though. Keep talking trash ... just don't start any fights with that visor on. All I'm sayin.
LastPommerFan Posted October 29, 2011 Report Posted October 29, 2011 Most boring thread ever. Everyone Agrees with Everyone else? Booooooooo.... Seriously, though, does Patty have any history with eye injuries? I seem to remember something, although The Malhotra thing from last season should be reason enough for every player in the league.
DumbPuck Posted October 29, 2011 Report Posted October 29, 2011 Seriously, though, does Patty have any history with eye injuries? Does it matter? Eyes are so fragile ... once you have a history of eye injury it's probably too late to do anything about it.

No eye injuries that I recall, but he's had vision problems and headaches related to neck injuries in 2008 and 2009. And to add to the (apparently boring) consensus, I agree with what's been said already; start a fight and take off the helmet/visor, otherwise no problem. Glad to see more guys wearing them.

It's just less obvious (for lack of a better word).
FolignosJock Posted October 31, 2011 Report Posted October 31, 2011 I played lacrosse with kaletas brother in high school and he taught me everything i know about getting under peoples skin, that dude could "chirp" with the best of em.
shrader Posted October 31, 2011 Report Posted October 31, 2011 It's a Kaleta thread so I'll post it here. A friend has been posting stuff on facebook all day today with links to this giant archive of local Buffalo newspapers. I got bored so I searched for myself. I was looking at this one short hockey recap in the Hamburg Sun (which strangely enough came up in a search for my name even though I wasn't mentioned). Out of the corner of my eye, I just happened to notice Kaleta's name on the other side of the page. Apparently he scored a goal in mini-mites that day. I couldn't help but laugh.
WNYbacker Posted October 31, 2011 Report Posted October 31, 2011 How did the whole being tough and not wearing a visor go for Chris pronger? Not so good. Gotta be crazy not to wear a shield in the league, but if a fair face-to-face fight starts, then he has to lose to helmet.
wonderbread Posted November 3, 2011 Report Posted November 3, 2011 Just heard he has a meeting with Shanny for a head butt last night to Vorchek.
Weave Posted November 3, 2011 Report Posted November 3, 2011 Just heard he has a meeting with Shanny for a head butt last night to Vorchek. When did that happen?
wonderbread Posted November 3, 2011 Report Posted November 3, 2011 When did that happen? not sure I don't remember it happening.
DumbPuck Posted November 3, 2011 Report Posted November 3, 2011 When did that happen? Probably right as the mysterious, phantom Regher elbowing occurred in the third.

Weave Posted November 3, 2011 Report Posted November 3, 2011 video I'm not sure what I think about that. An argument can be made that he was just trying to drive Voracek off the puck. I'm not sure that the argument would contain the whole truth though. :D
