As another poster said, Miller is on pace for a 70 game season and this is just not right.

The NHL season is a long grind and in previous years we haven't had a player who can come in and spell Miller. Well, we do now and Enroth needs to play.

In Vancouver they have Cory Schneider, a very good goalie, a starter in many cities. He's already played in 4 games. Partly because Luongo sucks in October every year, and partly because he needs to play and if you want to go deep into the playoffs, the starter needs to have something left come June.

Lindy Ruff is just like Marc Crawford when it comes to using backups. Play Enroth every 3rd game and it will be a recipe for success.

As for Myers, be careful what you wish for with this kid. I repeat, kid. He's playing the toughest position and isn't even 22 years old yet. He will be a Norris candidate but it'll take time. Defence is the hardest position to learn. He's nowhere near his prime.

I think Lindy sees his goalie rotation like I do. He's going to rest Miller when he can, but if it is conference games, there is less of a chance of this. Enroth will get starts against bottom feeders in the EC and against WC teams, but he wants Miller in net for the games that matter. I don't see anything wrong with that logic either.

And it's awfully early to start projecting out those total number of Miller starts. As I believe it was X said, we're about to hit a long run of friday/saturday games. Enroth is going to get plenty of starts.

Pat Kaleta apparently picks on 19 year old teenagers in the National Hockey League. :)

Which he should, let the kid know what the NHL is about. Downie's subsequent behavior is expected as well.

I can't wait for everyone to freak out that the projected starts for Miller has dropped to 45.

I don't see Garon as a great (nor as athletic as old man Rolly) I suspect he can be beaten high but that is hard to do when the D collapses and blocks like Tampa does.

Sometimes goaltenders just fit a teams style. Bryzgolov in Phoenix comes to mind - he had similar support. But it also took the league (and probably Jim Corsi) until the playoffs last year to figure out Bobrosky could not make a save above his nipples. Until then they might ride him

For the record, I'm uncomfortable with the reference to Bobrovsky's nipples.

As far as Miller, I think he should always play after 2 days rest. A day to recover and a day to practice and play on the third day. Perfect.

Enroth should play one end of the back to backs and have enough starts to keep him fresh. Oct is a pretty light schedule compared to the months ahead.

If you see Miller getting beat cleanly from 20 ft out or if you think Miller cost you the game, then play Enroth the next game. That hasn't happened yet.

Absolutely he should.

I just got a kick out of Guy Boucher's posturing for the camera.

And I would like to see Malone challenge Regher at the beginning of a shift.

Regher took the fight but take him at the beginning and you aren't going to get 10 seconds of Paddycake.

To Malone's credit he didn't swing when Regher was down, but challenging a guy after a clean hit at the end of seperate shift. I don't know but I suspect that isn't over.

Vanek is also on pace to score 71 goals this season. Seems foolish this early in the season to project things out over the course of a year. If Enroth starts the next game Miller will then be paced to play 63 games this season. There have not been any back-to-back games to need to give Miller a rest. Wouldn't surprise me if we didn't see Enroth until November 4th or 5th, and then there are back to back games every weekend in Nov.

I will say this about Myers. His offensive game has been more down than up, he has shown no inkling to playing physical on a regular basis(please don't drag out the youtube video of him dragging Richards on the ice), still looks lost in his own end without the puck, and he has been handling the puck like it is a hand grenade. What is his potential? I am not sure, but I don't want to hear any talk of him being a Norris trophy candidate, or even an all star game candidate until he shows he can play at that level for an entire season.

One other thing about last nights game...

I thought the stupid drop pass outside of the blueline on the PP was a McCutcheon innovation. Well I guess I was wrong. He is gone, but that idiot play is still being used by the Sabres.

It's not just a Sabre thing. It's all over the league. It's one thing to do it on your own side of the neutral zone, but that one from Ehrhoff yesterday at the Tampa blue line was a head scratcher.

I'm not sure, but from my own experience it seems to me that the drop pass is meant to make the defender take the player making the drop pass and allow that player to set a pick so that the player receiving the pass can enter the zone unhindered. The problem is that no one on other teams is falling for it because our guys aren't setting the pick right. They need to make that defender pay for not playing a softer D but they aren't. They drop it to a player that isn't in a position to come in onside and avoid the defender.

A slightly different take,(first impression/have not looked at the tape/could be wrong) same conclusion:

Luke was standing still in the low slot, with his back square to the shooter, watching Miller and the puck when the puck ends up on the stick of the scorer standing three feet behind him. He served as a pretty good screen in that instance and had he been in proper position he gets a chance to touch the puck or put a stick on the shooter, no goal.

More importantly ...Luke had Vanek wide open going to a open net twice, and the Captain once, all with a open passing lane, but, he decides to shoot twice(both low percentage shots)and lost the puck trying to skate in the third instance. The play was pass, even if it never gets there. He seems to have developed the misconception he is on the one line because he scores goals? Luke needs to deliver the puck on time, go to the net for loose pucks and accumulate points .

Two of their four goals were deflections off of Erhroff, at least one of which surprised Miller five hole, the second looked like he came off the post early.

They need a pp scheme to open lanes for Erhroff. Passing, zone entry and puck possession all needs mucho work.

Be careful on what you say about Myers, no one here actually watches him play. Some here think he is a top ten defender. They did not notice his two near fatal giveaways in his end (both saves by Miller) and the 3-4 times he coughed up the puck in the d zone when under pressure, no less the silly shot he took with Tampa's best shot blocker standing in the lane in front of him, which resulted in a solo run to a goal. (The game winner)He has much to learn imo, mostly between his ears. He also needs to use his wrist shot seven out of every ten times he shoots . He gets it off his stick much faster than the twenty seconds it takes for him to use his slap shot and it is a great shot .His contract was a far greater gamble than most realize. He is still very much a kid.

Leino shoots like a girl. I never noticed that before?

It was nice to see Boyes score.

The energy line played great.

Vanek should have had a penalty shot.

Final analysis…. Just one game, not life or death. If Millers position is a little better on one of the Erhroff deflections, or Adam covers his man in the low slot or Tyler does not take that silly shot or Vanek gets the penalty shot. Games turn on little things. I was hoping this team would gell quickly, apparently not.

Ahem...

Ehrhoff. He's German.

Well, I think Malone did more or less the right thing. He immediately stepped up to avenge a hit to the captain against the perpetrator, and, as you said, he didn't take any cheap shots during the fight. I would've wanted one of our guys to do the same thing if the roles were reversed.

I too think Myers' play has been a bit uneven, but the bolded part is a bit overstated IMHO.

In this regard, does anyone still think we don't need Weber, if the Predators decide they need to unload him, because we have Myers?

Separately: I thought it was interesting that Sekera was moved up and paired with Ehrhoff and Leopold was demoted to the 3rd pairing with MAG. I didn't notice much difference in defensive efficiency, but I think it shows that Lindy likes what he's seeing from Reggie.

I thought it really empowered Sekera and he looked pretty good with Ehrhoff IMO.

And if we get the predators Weber, then we would have a monopoly on all the Webers leaguewide. The FCC would not take kindly to that :nana:

I think Malone's reaction was less of "the right thing" than you do. It was a clean, legal hit, with nothing even remotely cheap about it. And it was the kind of hit that rarely produces injury. As far as I am concerned, Malone really had nothing to avenge. Players going after players for making clean hits is a bit lame. Then again, I like the fisticuffs so I really don't care much.

I don't disagree with this in theory but I do think the "code" in the NHL as currently in effect requires a response if the captain (especially a skill guy like Vinny) is really laid out by a big hit like that one.

Is this "code" where they also published the memo that permitted a skate to precede a puck into the crease back in 1999?
