He has two.

I think it's funny and actually feel a little sorry for him,.. very little.

I kinda feel the same way. I mean, not like we don't rehash it enough on our own but how little do you have going on in your life to post a pic with the cup and a shirt calling you a cheater made by buffalo fans.... Unless someone paid you for it.

It is not Hull's fault for trying to score the goal, he's just playing the game. It's the leagues fault for not getting the call right. It wasn't a goal and never will be but that's all in the past. I don't like the "Brett Hull is a cheater" shirts because he isn't a cheater. This is a garage league and probably always will be. They literally build in human error with ref's making decisions in a fraction of a second with no ability to challenge by the coaches.

They did get the call right though. It was a goal in accordance with the rule update that no one but the teams knew about. It was us, the ignorant and unknowing fans, that had to suffer the agony of finding out after the fact that there was nothing wrong with that goal. That sucks.

But it's a far easier t-shirt to make instead of the real version where they need to photoshop in a picture of Gary Bettman in the background shrugging his shoulders. Either that or he needs to be controlling Hull like a marionette.

I'd buy that over the "cheater" schtick in a heartbeat. I think the current shirt is funny enough, but *that* ... that'd be priceless. Or actually, probably $22.95, so maybe not quite priceless.

If you seriously believe that, I have some Ocean front property in Kansas for sale........

Everyone in the league acknowledges it as true. All of the players know it is. What's unbelievable about that?

it's a joke, dude.

and, IMO, a good one because it manages to put a humorous twist on an unpleasant memory and does so in a super pithy and in-joke sort of way. when i wore that shirt in an airport last year, i had 2 guys (from detroit, it turned out) sitting across from me giving me funny looks, until one of them got it, at which time he said, "sabres fan, huh?" (the shirt says "born in buffalo" on the back, but they didn't know that.)

They certainly aren't going to acknowledge that they royally screwed the pooch on that one. It's far easier to say it was a good goal and even make up crap like they altered the rule part way through the season. I certainly don't recall any such rule change. In fact, I would ask to someone to find some sort of proof to this allegation that a rule change was made. Something in the form of a league document and not hearsay.

We don't live in the world now that we lived in back then. Things didn't see the light of day as easily. The NHL has opened itself up a lot and the internet has really changed the game when it comes to things like rule changes.

Players, owners, referees and league officials all acknowledge that the memo existed. The only people that continue to denounce it are Sabres fans, who never would have seen it anyway.

was it a "funny ha ha" eye roll? or a "oh. you're from *buffalo.* eye roll? funny ha ha, he's less of a hole. the other, and he's a complete female genitalia cleansing system.

Both. I mean, come on, it's Brett Hull. Of course he's a bit of a doosh, and he'd be the first to admit it. But I wouldn't mind sitting down and having a beer with the guy. He seemed pretty cool.

Actually, at the time back in 1999, the only people that acknowledged that this memo ever existed was the refs in the game and Bettman, and all they acknowledged was that the goal was legal because he posesed the puck before putting his foot in the crease. Sabres players and coaching staff seemed very unaware of this "memo" and rule change

If they were unaware then why not dispute it? Why not make a bigger deal about it? Why not take the league to the mat until they admit they made the wrong call?

Because it was real. Because they did know about it. But saying "Sorry everyone in Buffalo, Brett Hull didn't cheat" in the wake of such a controversial Stanley Cup loss, would have been a slap in the face to the entire fan base. An entire fan base that had no idea.

This is just plain false. Ruff was arguing for 20 minutes while the Stars were skating the Cup around. Why would he do that if "everyone knew"? He gave a WTF wave to Bettman himself. Why would he do that if "everyone knew"? Even Peca said "The consensus back then was they missed a call. They did everything they could to cover it up. There was a lot of anger at the time." That doesn't really sound like a guy who thought the memo was real.

I chalk a lot of that immediate reaction up to passion of the circumstances. No one now is going to dispute it. If it was still an issue we'd still be hearing it from players on that team. Instead everyone is laughs and "ah good times" about it. I think if it had been me in their shoes I'd still be plenty pissed about it if I knew it wasn't a good goal. And I'd be calling Hull on it this day, brotherhood of players be damned.

I think the players disagree with you. This is from ten years later and Peca still uses the phrase "If we lost the game fair and square..."

Good find, I hadn't seen that. Credit to Peca for sticking to his guns then, that endears him to me. If he still believes to this day that it didn't count, then I can't take that away from him. But when guys like Barnaby are practically fellating Hull about how funny he is, I wonder if Peca is just in denial.

The only reason to be mad at Hull is because he was the one who scored the goal. Calling him a cheater is like calling someone who takes a penalty a cheater because they did something that was against the rules of the game. The Blame doesn't fall on him, it would fall on the officials and the league for letting it stand, and their excuse (a secret memo sent ot all teams and officials changing the rules of the game late in the year) just reaks of a coverup
