BetweenThePipes00 Posted October 21, 2011 Report Posted October 21, 2011 Good post. As for Gragnani -- thanks for owning up. I also thought he played pretty solid. I also meant to add that MAG was much better tonight. And really his play was never "get him the hell out of there!" worthy by any stretch ... I just feel Weber needs to get in a game, and he would have been my choice heading into tonight. I can't see them messing with anything after that game, though.

Andrew Amerk Posted October 21, 2011 Report Posted October 21, 2011 I got this, Andrew. THAN ADAM ADAM ADAM LUKE ADAM Niiiiiice.

I can't see them messing with anything after that game, though. This is turning into a magical night for me. In all seriousness, though, I completely agree with the last sentence. That was a thoroughly professional, complete-game win by the Sabres, who are starting to look like ... an elite team? Down, boy (he says to himself). Let's see how they do against Philly, Washington, Boston, etc.
Formerly Allan in MD Posted October 21, 2011 Report Posted October 21, 2011 Vanek has become the complete package. His fore checking tonight was really impressive. Anybody notice that he doesn't shoot too badly either?

He did do fine tonight but was florida forechecking hard and all over them like the pens or carolina or to a extent montreal? When MAG performs well against a team that is pounding you every shift and is always in your face, then I will indeed be happy and more comfortable with mr. gragnani. Simple Math here: Forecheck = Crappy MAG No Forecheck = Good MAG
Cereal Posted October 21, 2011 Report Posted October 21, 2011 Anyone who saw the game have any comments on the forward lines Lindy was rolling? Especially Leino, as he got the assist with Pom and Van on the second goal. Anyone think we'll still see Ethron on Saturday? If I wasn't certain that Harry Neale was an idiot before tonight, I am now. No team is pulling their goalie when down three with 1:42 left in an October game, Harry. Haha. Count your blessings, it seems the majority of us out-of-towners haven't gotten a Buffalo feed YET! Sabres move into 3rd place in the conference with this win. PLAYOFFS, BABY!!!! And at least momentarily tied for first in the league with Washington in ROW through 6 games (Only Detroit has the possibility of doing better, or even tying). Paging Carp.... The charts! Later, as the camera zoomed in on Brian Campbell before a faceoff: C.J.: "Daddy, those guys are sweating like CRAZY!!" Perfect!
JJFIVEOH Posted October 21, 2011 Report Posted October 21, 2011 WGR online just started working again......... but thanks for the replies. Can't get a simple answer from a simple question.
SabresMojo Posted October 21, 2011 Report Posted October 21, 2011 Nice to see Miller get the shutout after his superhuman effort last game. Hell of a game by the team, Defense stayed back finally and Miller was great again. Buffalo looked ten times better then the Panthers. Glad Miller is in mid season form Great win tonight! That Pommer Vanek Adam line looks legitttttttttttt No panic Vanek.. I love it great game and awesome goals. This is NOT your 2010-2011 Buffalo Sabres! :worthy: :worthy: :worthy: Sabres starting w/ 10 out of 12 points, scoring at least 3 goals a game, Vanek, Adams and Pominville line putting up sick numbers, etc... Man, gotta love it. Go Sabres! I can't wait for the next game! ALL of the above are thoughts that I have had the past week about this team! Gonna be a great season!
SabresMojo Posted October 21, 2011 Report Posted October 21, 2011 Regher is smart and really plays solid good to see that hope the younger guys can pick up on that I think this is another reason they brought him in. He is a great force physically and will cause havoc; reminds me of Jay McKee. We really haven't had a defensemen whose main part of his game was physicality, we seem to have been a team that was scared to hit and block shots. Look at the shot chart at ESPN.HOLY CRAP. You can draw a perfect rectangle 10' X 20' in in the slot where no shots were allowed. That's 200 square ft. of slot area where there were no shots. Great job by the D. http://scores.espn.go.com/nhl/gamecast?gameId=400047283 I looked at the chart and another thing (besides the amazing D) that stood out, was the massive amount of shots we had from the points and top of the circles. Not to take away a single thing from our D at all. Tonight’s game, according to Dudacek:• A solid, complete effort from our boys, pretty much a textbook road game.• I know that wasn’t their best lineup, but Dineen has his work cut out for him. It’s going to be a long year in Florida. They were very rough in their own zone. Only a restrained Buffalo attack and some mediocre shooting prevented this from being a blowout.• Line shuffle worked somewhat, albeit against an inferior opponent. Cody did some nice work on the Leino line and Boyes showed some more fight.• Am I exaggerating things, or is any line that Gerbe is on going to be effective?• I figured this was the game to start Enroth, keep him in the flow, save Miller for the better Tampa team. I won’t say I was wrong, but I will say it didn’t matter tonight. Randy Ireland could have had a shutout. Today’s 54-year-old-retired-to-the-farm-in-Saskatchewan Randy Ireland. Miller probably never broke a sweat.• Vanek and Pominville have some special magic working right now. The hands of 26 have been sublime, the sustained focus the best of his career. The captain seems to be in the right place, making the right play all the time, all over the ice. On an earlier thread I said it was likely one of Pominville, Vanek or Roy would have a career year. The season has a long way to go, but it looks like it could be two of them. I can’t remember the last time a Sabre duo has been this dominant offensively for six games in row. Lafontaine and Mogilny?• Was that glowing sideboard ad annoying or what? Another great review! I agree, the sideboard was a horrible eye sore. As for the Sabres duo, I'd have to agree...great in the 90's! What about Briere and Drury? Not as dominant, but still pretty damn good. I've been watching the Sabres since the beginning and IMO this is not only the best Sabres defensive corps ever, it's also the best Sabres goaltending tandem ever. I think we'll be in for a lot of low-scoring games (by oponents) this year. Thats bold...what about the Hasek years, or previous years when we've had a great goalie? (Time for a history lesson) Not much to add to the analysis of a very solid win, so I will share this ... Stuff my 3-year old said during tonight's gameC.J.: "Daddy, where's Gerbe?" (His favorite player)Me: "That's him there standing by the boards ... the little guy."C.J.: "Is he going to grow up someday like I will?"Me: "No, buddy, I think he's done growing."Later, as the camera zoomed in on Brian Campbell before a faceoff:C.J.: "Daddy, those guys are sweating like CRAZY!!"I kid you not ... I just cracked up and then he started laughing even though he had no idea what he was laughing about. What are the odds Campbell would be the guy to spark that comment? That is just awesome! Hilarious, funny, comical, etc!
SabresMojo Posted October 21, 2011 Report Posted October 21, 2011 Anyone who saw the game have any comments on the forward lines Lindy was rolling? Especially Leino, as he got the assist with Pom and Van on the second goal. Anyone think we'll still see Ethron on Saturday? Enroth - Probably Maybe...not really sure; why stop a guy when he's doing well! Forward lines - I thought that they looked well for the most part. 26-72-29 have amazing chemistry, so thats set in stone probably...Leino had a very nice pass on the goal and looked like he knew what to do...shall be an interesting month!
nfreeman Posted October 21, 2011 Report Posted October 21, 2011 Anyone who saw the game have any comments on the forward lines Lindy was rolling? Especially Leino, as he got the assist with Pom and Van on the second goal. Anyone think we'll still see Ethron on Saturday? I thought McCormick really juiced up Leino and Boyes. That line was much more effective. Gaustad-Gerbe-Kaleta was as good as always. I didn't much like Roy-Stafford-Ennis. Since XB pointed it out, I noticed Roy's skating stride had a real hitch in it. I hate to say it but that doesn't bode well for him. As for the goalies, I think Miller playing this well is a direct result of Enroth getting a game (and playing well). So I think we'll see Enroth in one of the next 2 games.
TheMatrix31 Posted October 21, 2011 Report Posted October 21, 2011 Had to leave after the first, good to see Vanek continue with a hot start. The team as well, obviously. I like catching Tampa twice as they're struggling. Would hate to face them on fire.
JujuFish Posted October 21, 2011 Report Posted October 21, 2011 I will say that Vanek fattens up his stats against the Florida teams every year. I wouldn't say that about the Panthers. Over the last 3 years, he has 4G and 3A in 11 games against Florida. That is below his average scoring rate during the same time. 10-11: 1G 1A (4 games) 09-10: 1G 2A (3 games) 08-09: 2G 0A (4 games)
Knightrider Posted October 21, 2011 Report Posted October 21, 2011 Yup, Tampa is where he usually gets his hat tricks...

Great job by the D. http://scores.espn.go.com/nhl/gamecast?gameId=400047283 I don't think I have ever see a game where no shots were registered in the slot. Pretty impressive. • Am I exaggerating things, or is any line that Gerbe is on going to be effective? I think that is right. He, like St Louis, need to out hustle folks to stay on the team and not get killed out there. They are playing with Volkswagon bodies against SUVs and Semis. Which brings me to my next point... I want MAG no wheres near the forecheck of Philly or Boston. He did do fine tonight but was florida forechecking hard and all over them like the pens or carolina or to a extent montreal? When MAG performs well against a team that is pounding you every shift and is always in your face, then I will indeed be happy and more comfortable with mr. gragnani. Simple Math here: Forecheck = Crappy MAG No Forecheck = Good MAG I understand the point, but would counter that all Sabres wither under a heavy forecheck and most teams do to. Yup, Tampa is where he usually gets his hat tricks... That's what I recall about the Florida trip every year. Panthers game is a survival game and Lightning is a track meet where you need to out score them. Vanek is free to skate and shoot against Lightning.
Weave Posted October 21, 2011 Report Posted October 21, 2011 I thought McCormick really juiced up Leino and Boyes. That line was much more effective. Gaustad-Gerbe-Kaleta was as good as always. I agree with the McC-Leino-Boyes assessment. Twice in the 1st priod McC created a turnover in the neutral zone that led to good pressure. And McC does make the D follow him as he goes to the net readily and uses his body well along the board and behind the net. I thought Boyes in particular looked like he had more room. Stafford-Roy-Ennis doesn't seem to be accomplishing much. I was hoping/expecting for effort from Staff more like what we are seeing from Vanek. I'd like to see Stafford crashing the net more and getting back to the power forward he showed flashes of last season. He lit up TB last year if I remember correctly so hopefully Saturday gets him going.
Marvelo Posted October 21, 2011 Report Posted October 21, 2011 Thats bold...what about the Hasek years, or previous years when we've had a great goalie? (Time for a history lesson) Buffalo has had great goaltending over the years. A couple years Hasek had Biron as a backup. Also the tandem of Edwards-Sauve was VG, esp 79-80. But they never had a defense like this one, which will make Miller-Enroth that much better. http://www.goaliesarchive.com/sabres/yearbyyear.html
shrader Posted October 21, 2011 Report Posted October 21, 2011 Haha. Count your blessings, it seems the majority of us out-of-towners haven't gotten a Buffalo feed YET! I had my choice of broadcasts last night. So it was my first Sabre feed of the season. I got a good laugh last night out of Rob Ray picking on Vanek's slap shot after the 2nd goal. Yeah, it is very slow and deliberate, but my god that thing is accurate. That thing was a mirror image of his Montreal slap shot off the faceoff. And Rob Ray making fun of someone's shot is pure comedy gold.
nfreeman Posted October 21, 2011 Report Posted October 21, 2011 Which brings me to my next point... I want MAG no wheres near the forecheck of Philly or Boston. Good post. I was actually pretty surprised at how much of a difference McCormick made on that line last night. He did everything you said and, more generally, he skated quite well and his physicality made that line much harder to defend. I expect that line to stay together at least for the TB game. Separately, the Sabres have a good chance at building on this strong start. Check out their next 8 games: Sat, Oct 22 Tampa Bay Tue, Oct 25 Tampa Bay Thu, Oct 27 vs Columbus Sat, Oct 29 vs Florida Wed, Nov 2 vs Philadelphia Fri, Nov 4 vs Calgary Sat, Nov 5 @ Ottawa Tue, Nov 8 vs Winnipeg I know Tampa made the ECF last year, but they're 2-3-2 and 29th in the NHL in defense right now. And the Sabres generally seem to have their number. The rest of those games, other than Philly, are against the bottom dwellers (NOT "bottom feeders," btw, which means those that feed on the bottom dwellers and gets misused around here quite a bit). The Sabres have a nice opportunity now to get their new guys more reps with each other, get their young defensemen more reps, learn how to play responsibly at home, and get some payback against the GD Flyers. Go Sabres.
shrader Posted October 21, 2011 Report Posted October 21, 2011 So when MAG plays well against a good team, you'll feel better about his game? Really? You don't say? You might as well just listen to me on a Gerbe rant. It's the equivalent of this whole Weber thing.
LGR4GM Posted October 21, 2011 Report Posted October 21, 2011 So when MAG plays well against a good team, you'll feel better about his game? Really? You don't say? I'll feel better when he plays well more than 1 game out of 4.

Roy is playing with a naggign hamstring issue, wonder why Lindy isnt putting Leino between Staf and Ennis and letting roy play 4th line with less ice time?

nfreeman Posted October 21, 2011 Report Posted October 21, 2011 Roy is playing with a naggign hamstring issue, wonder why Lindy isnt putting Leino between Staf and Ennis and letting roy play 4th line with less ice time? Well, Leino and Ennis didn't have much chemistry together.
