Let's not get carried away...studly??  He was good. Nothing more, nothing less, and nothing that cemented a spot in the starting lineup 6 months later.

You're not being consistent here. You want to base Weber's status on past performance from last year but you won't do the same for Gragnani.

Re-read my post. I said MAG was good in the playoffs. My point is that he was not the next coming of Lidstrom.

PS Weber's sample size of play was much greater than Gragnani in 10-11...shouldn't that count for something?

I've heard the "best passer on the team" in regards to Gragnani from multiple places including Sabres broadcasts. It's not just you. I'll watch closer tonight.

I really would urge everyone to watch his passes. The way he consistently gets it to the recipient in the right spot and at the right time is uncanny. I really think it's a significant help for the transition from D to O, and I think it's what gives him the edge over Weber.

I don't know what happened in the off-season or training camp, but based on the play of Weber last year, did you not think that his play in 10-11 warranted a regular spot in the bottom pair, prior to this season starting?

But that's the most important time period right there.

That's what I don't get. I thought Weber exceeded expectations all season long and set a new standard for himself. He must have played awful in training camp/pre-season to lose his spot. He definitely deserves to be in there.

Weber did play well last year (although he, like every other defenseman on the team other than Myers, was outmatched by Philly's forecheck in the playoffs). He's going to be a good NHL defenseman and I'm glad the Sabres have him under contract. The biggest thing that happened between last season and now was that the Sabres brought in 2 new top-3 defensemen. Even after they unloaded Butler and sent down Morrisson, that left 3 legit NHL defensemen fighting it out for 2 spots.

It's a good problem to have.

I'm on a roll today, so I will just keep going...

Am I the only one who wouldn't mind if RJ & Harry retired?

I would mind.

The playoffs are going to carry a lot of weight and probably rightfully so. Ultimately though we're talking about a guy who hasn't played a full season at the NHL level yet so it's not as if we suddenly have an exceptional seasoned vet up in the press box. As for your Lidstrom comment, you're implying that people seem to think Gragnani is more than he actually is, but isn't the same exact thing happening with Weber here? I don't get the obsession here. He's a solid player, but just like Gragnani's not the second coming of Nick Lidstrom, Weber's not the second coming of Scott Stevens.

What this whole thing comes down to is what Lindy Ruff likes from his defensemen. It's no secret at this point that he absolutely loves getting his blue liners involved at both sides of the ice. Gragnani is far more dynamic in that aspect, so he's getting his shot right now. As I said a in the last day or so, Weber will get his as well. Hell, how long did it take for him to get into the lineup last year? This season is still a newborn, a lot of things are still to come.

MAG has until game 10 to show improvement and game 15-20 to stop sucking. Weber is a solid defenseman but until he plays in a real game this season, we have to assume that MAG is the better option. (even if we don't think so... which I do not)

Believe it or not, Sekera and Gragnani have the best Corsi ratings on the team by far.

is that like midi-chlorian count?

Even better, it measures the number of shots generated while on the ice, versus the number against.

Sekera and Gragnani right now are off the charts, top 10 in the league, and only behind Brent Burns for defensemen.

In other words, the Sabres generate most of their scoring opportunities while they are on the ice.

problem: MAG plays the pp so their should be more shots do to the increased zone time

also they (mag and sekera) play against lower pairings and have less regular strength ice time.

Does Corsi only do even strength? I am just trying to determine exactly how useful that stat is.

That is the 5x5.

I would imagine because Corsi is a Sabre coach, it is more important to the Sabres than the +/- .

Gragnani has made some mistakes, but it hasn't led to shots against.

Then that is very interesting. Not sure to what extent to use that but it is something to consider. If opposing teams are not shooting when that line is on the ice than maybe there is more there... I wish I could watch MAG all night tonight but I won't see any of the game so it will have to wait til Saturdays contest. I would assume that within the next month someone on the defense will get injured and Weber will be thrown in but for now I guess we will just sit and see what unfolds.

The trouble with television, at least for me, is it is really hard to see the defensive play especially away from the puck and how players are supporting each other.

Bill Hajt and Teppo Numminnen are two that never looked particularly great on TV, but man they were great in person.

It really is hard to get a sense for what angles they are taking and how much ice they cover when just watching TV. One reason I really miss Jim Lorenz commentary.

I wasn't the one in this thread who described Gragnani's play in the playoff as studly. That to me is a term that should be used to describe 1st team all-stars(such as Lidstrom), not some AHL call-up with 10 games under his belt. That's what I was responding to.

What site are you using to find player Corsi numbers?
