Vanek has become the complete package. His fore checking tonight was really impressive. Anybody notice that he doesn't shoot too badly either?

+1 on the forecheck, but even more impressive to me has been his back checking. There were times during the game yesterday where it just seemed like the Sabres attacked in waves with the wingers and d-men exchanging positions and roles, and Vanek actually had to protect against Florida rushes like a d-man. He hustled and did a very creditable job. They're all doing it, but Vanek stands out to me because in the past he's been more of a floater and not as involved in all phases of the game. Not sure what the difference is this year, but he's finally figuring out that you don't coast in this league.

A well played game against Florida. The context for me is Florida is not a wounded Montreal, a Philly, Boston, or Tampa. Things will get very interesting when the Sabres play the big teams that go to the net, forecheck and play defense. I am beginning to believe the team will be better than last years team but they have not jelled yet. There are signs. They better find a second scoring line before they run into Boston, Philly and Washington because shutting down one threat line will not be a big deal for them. Going into those games with a hot second, third or fourth line will be important. Tampa will be a really good test for them on Saturday.

He's been skating more. Previous years he would stand in the kitchen and take a beating for tip-ins - which pretty much kills the legs for anything else on a shift. Now, and since the Roy injury last year, he's been releasing higher and moving his feet and drawing the defense-men out.

The shot I loved last night was a laser beam Vanek fired from the left point. Theodore made the save, but that shot shot basically said that defenses have to respect him from the blue line in.

I think the key here is that on any given night we need just one of the Roy, Leino or Goose lines to be clicking along with the #1 line. The unpredictability of where the scoring comes from makes it difficult for the opposition to matchup and shutdown our forwards.

Yep. Our depth is allowing for some favourable mismatches. The opposition pretty well has to stick to their best definsive line when playing Vanek-Adam-Pommers but then what do you do when we have three other groups that can legitimally score? Let's get guys like Ville going and this team could become scary good very quickly.

Right.

I think this is the key to the whole strategy. The rolling four lines theory doesn't work as well when you don't have a dominant #1 type line that always gets the top pairings. With the way it is now, opponents have to play their #2 and #3 pairings on the remaining three lines in order to make sure they don't get burned by the 26-72-29 line. Without that top line, the other teams can just play their D normally without the added fatigue factor from the #1 line drawing the top d-men.

Yep that was my point... you cannot play those teams with one line .They are as deep as you are. To date the Sabres have been a one line team.I am hopefull that will change.

Not sure I agree with the one line thing.

I realize they weren't together last night, but Gerbe Roy stafford had five goals in five games.

That's pretty respectable.

it looked like everyone played pretty well tonight beside the roy ennis staff line. leinos line looked a little shakey in the beginning but seemed to find some rhythem later on. vaneks line speaks for itself. and gaustad gerbe and kaleta had some decent scoring chances and seemed to hold the zone well. overall leino i think needs to get rid of the puck a little quicker there were a couple plays in the beginning were he held on a little to long and took a pretty good beating.

We didn't get to tied for #3 in Goals for per game without getting some contribution from everyone.

The offensive numbers will even out ... Vanek and Pominville obviously will not keep up this pace, Roy and Ennis will get going ... at least they are cinsistently scoring 3 or 4 a night and not 6 one night and 1 the next.

The most important thing to me is they have been significantly better in their own end. Ten goals against in six games ... two while shorthanded, two off the rush while on the power play ... so SIX even strength goals in six games. Again, unsustainable pace, but such solid defensive play smooths out all the hot and cold streaks offensively.

Wow... there are tens of fans in the stands for this one...

They said they had about 14,000.

As opposed to Phoenix with about 4,000

For those that saw the game, did Roy appear noticeably uncomfortable or slow? As I've stated before, no reason to take any chances after coming back from a pretty major lower-body injury.

I didn't realize last night how badly Gaustad beat up Bradley from the MSG feed.

check out the SportsSouth feed.

Sweet, thanks for posting.

Well put. This has got me really pumped for this season. Similar to 05-06 and 06-07

No one will ever take hockey seriously in Phoenix until they get rid of that curve in their rink.

Just contract these two teams and move C-Bus to somewhere that someone might care...

And screw over that new market? Contract Columbus and move the Coyotes. If this was ever actually a serious option, you might as well give that new city the best team available.

I thought I heard Paul Hamilton report this morning that Roy is battling a bad hammy.
