Glad you're not jumping off the bridge like everyone else in here. I saw a lot of good things in this game. Things I've been wanting to see for a long time. This team wont lose every game this way. They lost because they were playing to win, and taking chances didn't go their way. I can't hate an aggressive effort.

On to the next one.

Granted, I missed the end of the 1st and the second, but, I liked what I saw with the exception of the trip...

Vanek bad penalty on the winner, bad point play on one shorty and a blind back pass on the another.

And he almost tied it late.

Guess that's what you get with him.

Get outta here with that. This team played a much different game than last season. They lost tonight because of some bad bounces and some overly aggressive play, which everyone complained last year there wasn't enough of. They put over 40 shots on Ward tonight. That's a good effort.

Please explain to me how they played different? Gave up the shorties (the same). Took 7 penalties (normally the same) started the losing at home already (the same). But wow ur right !!!

I kind of skimmed through the posts here so I admit I didn't read them all but there appears to be a ton of Vanek bashing. You know, that same guy that has what, 7 points through the first three games? Come on, stupid play but I'm not ready to burn him at the stake. We will be alright, our defensive team game needs to improve huge but I'm not pushing any panic buttons at all.

Fine. Ignore the obvious changes in energy level, physical play, hitting, passion. Ignore all that if you want. Sorry you're too stupid to pick up on the things in this team's game that are different.

None of that matters, the end result is what matters. Passion? If that means everybody go attack the puck and not care about defense then screw that.

I didn't watch the entire game, but from what I did see, I am starting to understand why he was known as Errorhoff when he played in San Jose.

I was not impressed with the effort of the team as a whole in probably the biggest home opener in recent memory. And Allen....total pantywaist d-bag. Grow a set if you want to go headhunting on players without the puck. Ruutu must be schooling him on how to play the game.

Hahahha, not just pointing you out and everyone is entitled to vent, but holy s$it I forgot how bipolar this board can be. It's one game, some ppl need to step back off of the ledge. Ward played well, our special teams sucked but I thought we were the better team for the most part. We will be fine, we were never going to go 82-0 lol.

Such a disappointing loss tonight because I really love how the Sabres played tonight. They were aggressive, they were all over the puck, and they got shots on net. They consistently stood up to Allen to defend the honor of their captain in Pominville, which this team would not have done in the past. Too bad Allen's a coward and won't stand up for himself, but it was good to see Gaustad give Gleason a shiner.

Ultimately, the Sabres lost the game on special teams, no surprise as all 4 Carolina goals were on special teams. More than PP goals, which should not have happened, the shorties really were the ones I had a problem with tonight. Luke Adam gave up skating on one of the shorties, which is just bad. I'm not sure Miller had much chance on those due to the poor backcheck to skate back on the shorthanded opportunities. I also think that the Sabres needed to be stronger on the PK tonight.

Overall, the Sabres played a bit too aggressive tonight, which I think cost them. On the PP goals, they were a bit too aggressive on the PK with Myers kind of too aggressive on the last goal. And, they were too aggressive on the PP which caused the PK goals against. However, I loved the puck movement on the PP. They deserved to score a PP goal tonight, but didn't come through.

Oh well, you can't win them all, but I thought tonight the Sabres played well albeit a bit too aggressive. They did not play fancy like they have a tendency to at home. If they calm down a little bit and play in position, I like their chances tomorrow night playing a similar style to tonight.

Tough loss, but a lot of hard work and effort from our guys. I had fun watching them play, even if the result wasn't so good. Vanek made some mistakes tonight, but it'll happen. He'll bounce back. I'm the most disappointed with Miller's play, but again, bad games happen. Let's learn from our mistakes and move on to the next one.

On the positive side, I liked what I saw from the Ennis-Leino-Boyes line. I think once these guys get some more chemistry, they'll be a consistent scoring line.

7 penalties was the norm?

I am troubled by the SHGs. As above, I'm not sure whether that's due to execution or tactics, at this point.

And the "losing at home?!" Please.

Amen.

The end result is in June, not October. It will take passion to get there.

EDIT: Quicksand, on the Leino line, I hope so. I'm not seeing it right now, but I hope that you're right and that it's a matter of time.

My impression (from watching from home on MSG) was that Carolina played this game much more physically than we did. Granted, I have not yet seen the statistics.

And at the rate they are playing now, being 2-1, the Sabres could still finish at 54-28. Uh oh, where's my noose. :death:

Good points, it's not saying much but I thought Boyes played his best game since pre playoffs last year. We need to get him to start going again.

Welcome to the 2011-2012 Eastern Conference.

You can't expect to beat any team in the East this season with the game the Sabres played tonight. Far too many mistakes, not unexpected considering the long layoff and the hoopla of the home opener. They need to shake it off or they will get run out of the building in Pittsburgh.

Not sure if Pominville was planning to get the Sabres logo tattooed to his chest. Bryan Allen must have thought he did so he did it for him at no cost.

The way Myers skated tonight it may be inappropriate to refer to him as a "kid." He looked like a man against boys most shifts.

Not Miller's best game. I don't think he gives the Sabres the advantage in goal most nights that some fans want to believe.

Vanek needs to shake tonight off. He seems like he type of player that could let a bad night turn into a bad stretch.

Ennis needs to work on getting the puck away a bit quicker. He had the puck in some great spots and didn't pull the trigger.

Looking forward to see the Sabres matched up against a talented Penguins team.

Sorry: I had to number them. It was the only way to reply without driving myself insane with html tags.

1. The game? You're right; the style, I disagree. But there was a lot of slop tonight, if that's what you mean.

2. As others have said, Allen had better watch his ass.

3. He looked like a man among boys, but he did do some screwy things, too. There were a couple of lost pucks and a couple of passes that should have been shots.

4. Agreed and agreed. I still think he's a top-ten goalie, but he's not Hasek and we need to stop pretending that he is.

5. Yes, and he certainly has let it get to him in the past. So it needs to get out of his mind NOW.

6. I remember a certain Tyler having a sophomore slump and I hope I am not reliving it.

7. Looking forward to a bunch of Primanti-Brothers-eating, Rapelisberger-loving, antarctic flightless birds getting squashed.

I agree with most of this post except the bolded part. The guys scored two goals (they did give him the one Roy got credit for right?) and I thought had a good game other than that stupid penalty.

Edit: My bad, it was only the first goal but I thought he could of had a few.

So I don't know if it was brought up, do you think there will be a fine and/or suspension to that pusscake allen?? I believe a fine is warranted for sure..2 games is fair too, but I doubt that'll happen.

Vanek is not very smart...

Normally I scoff at statements like this but I've questioned his thought process for a while. While I don't think he is a dullard, his brain farts happen at the worst time.

Give up two shorties you undo lots of good things.

Sabres were dominant for stretches - tons of possession - shots - forward lines were solid - good response to Allen

Cam Ward stood on his head.

Upside of the loss are the mistakes are pretty correctable. Too much overcommitment by D on the kill --wandering out to corners, and on the PP getting caught.

Painful yes, but keeping in mind there are three new D pairs it wasn't too surprising there are some special teams chinks to work out.

Leino line looks close to gelling.

You don't deserve to win a game in which you give up 2 short handed goals. Period.

On to tomorrow.

This. Interesting game to watch, since I missed the first two last weekend. Bummer they lost; I was looking forward to a win all week. But, they were TRYING too hard. You could see it plain as day. And then Carolina frustrated them. This loss was due to their heads not in the right place.

They pinched the first time and got caught. Why pinch like that again? And then, even after 2 shorties, they pinched AGAIN! Like children. And the undisciplined penalties. :wallbash:

But, at least they brought me (and I'm probably not alone) back down to earth. I was entertaining a 10 game streak for the opening.

Anyway, there were lots of good things going on, too: Myers = beast; Stafford = good on PK, and a decent night for him overall; Pommers = alive and skating after that hit; 40+ SOG before counting blocked shots; VERY aggressive game.

I bet the system has changed (again), they were very aggressive on the PK and the PP. The Sabres haven't been about "aggressive" for a while and I wonder if the boys took the game plan too far, what with being unfamiliar with that concept: "aggressive" and all excited about their new digs and opening night and what not.

I am glad that the next game is on the road.
