papazoid Posted October 13, 2011 Report Posted October 13, 2011 There's no need to recall the litany of criticisms aimed at Philadelphia sports fan; cheering injured players and snowballs at Santa have long passed the point of cliché. The fact is that Philly fans will never get a break because of that perception. For example, if a few of them boo images of rival players on the arena scoreboard, and those players happen to be in a public service announcement about the fight against cancer, well then the Philly faithful must just be classless right? YES !! it's another example of the classless Philly fan. http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/blog/puck_daddy/post/Flyers-fans-boo-rivals-alas-it-8217-s-during-?urn=nhl-wp14710

thesportsbuff Posted October 13, 2011 Report Posted October 13, 2011 of course i did....and i disagree....i think it's classless to boo an anti-cancer commercial. I agree that it is classless, but i'll give them some leeway -- I don't think they're THAT classless to boo a anti-cancer commercial. Last night I posted in a different thread about how I felt it was wrong of them, but then I saw what was probably the exact same commercial on TV last night where the three players introduced themselves (which is probably when the booing occurred) before making any mention of cancer awareness etc. I'm guessing they saw players of opposing teams on their scoreboard and instinctively boo'd them before they even realized it was for a good cause.

frissonic Posted October 13, 2011 Report Posted October 13, 2011 of course i did....and i disagree....i think it's classless to boo an anti-cancer commercial. Couldn't agree more. Most normal people can separate hockey player on ice from professional athlete endorsing a cause. Philly fans booing a player for bringing attention to a cause is, indeed, classless. Miller, Toews and Crosby are all class acts, regardless of my feelings towards Crosby when he's on the ice. Same with Toews. I love the Sabres as much as the next guy, but if someone shows that video in the FNC that involves other teams' players, I would stand up and applaud ANY player's affiliation with such a good cause. But maybe that's just me.

I wouldn't have recognized the emblem, you expect Philly folks to? :) I'm giving them half a pass on this one. It will go down in lore though, perhaps unfairly.

I just think they probably didn't immediate realize that it was a anti-cancer commercial until it was too late. which only adds to the "idiot flyers" fan mystique. ;) "ohhhh ... look. there's cindy crybaby! i HATE HIM AND HISMOTHERFRACKINGPITTSBURGHCRAPTEAMIHOPETHEYALLBURNIN ... oh, wait. is that a cancer commercial? sh**. now i feel like rangers fan." i generalize and hyberbolize, but i think it's a fair assessment of the majority of fans of any philly team. with the exception of maybe the eagles. cuz they just suck. at least for this year.

They were booing the players, that much is obvious but it's still stupid. It's not another reason to call a philly fan a 'tard but it is also inexcusable.
inkman Posted October 13, 2011 Report Posted October 13, 2011 Why wouldn't the NHL just get players from each team to rep the cause? Would it have been that hard? It would have prevented this emabarassment. The NHL does very little that makes sense so none of this is really a surprise. The amount of foresight that goes into their decisions is questionable at best. Larry Quinn dropping the Slug on all of us had the same amount of intuition.

The one with the hockey sticks and the diamonds? I can probably say I've never seen that logo before. Really, I'm not being a troll.

By using the word 'tard...do you mean retard? As in developmentally disabled? I don't get it, and please I'm not trying to be a jerk about it... ...BUT...how can you, in good conscience, berate a group of people for being insensitive to a cause while at the same time denigrating a whole other group of people?

No class at all. :D

Ok fair enuff, I thought I saw a different logo lol. :bag: . Still in my defense it does say 'hockey fights cancer' in big letters.

At least put Giroux or the like in the same commercial. Fail by NHL community relations dept, not the fans.
Andrew Amerk Posted October 14, 2011 Report Posted October 14, 2011 Stay classy Philly. There's something in the cheesesteak grease that rots their brains. And, I thought it was batteries they threw at Santa, not snowballs...
