Tom Backyard Posted October 7, 2011 Report Posted October 7, 2011 LeiYES! Dude, were you saving that up all summer, or did that just come off the top of your head?
darksabre Posted October 7, 2011 Report Posted October 7, 2011 Dude, were you saving that up all summer, or did that just come off the top of your head? It was all in the heat of the moment. Also, I piss excellence.
deluca67 Posted October 7, 2011 Report Posted October 7, 2011 Today was a nice opening day victory. Good to see Vanek starting off with a pair. A bit shocking that Leopold led the team in ice time with 24:45 of ice time. He appeared to be the top penalty killer with 5:04 of PK time. Hope they follow up with another two points tomorrow and get home healthy and ready for the long grind. The East is going to be tough this year. The Sabres can have a great regular season and still not crack the top four in the Conference. Staying healthy and banking points early will be key.
Eleven Posted October 8, 2011 Author Report Posted October 8, 2011 I'm late to the party and really don't want to read a hundred posts. So: 1) The Sabres won!!!!! 2) And looked good doing it. 3) It was really cool at a certain Elmwood sports bar, where a lot of people played hooky for hockey. 4) This is kinda sick, but there was a part of me wishing I was watching at home, so I could chat with the group--SDS, maybe it is time for a Sabres shoutbox. 5) The captain scored the goal that broke it open. In earlier years, that's a pass back to the point, recollect, etc. Today? Pommer fired it.

Banking points early is the key to resting small injuries at the end of the season to prepare for the second season. This is especially critical in goal and at center for the Sabres.

Tyrannustyrannus Posted October 8, 2011 Report Posted October 8, 2011 I saw Pommers drill someone that came to close to Miller on one of his saves. He's not going to make hits of the week, but maybe the Captain's C woke something inside of him

He's not going to make hits of the week, but maybe the Captain's C woke something inside of him Pommer is going to be as good a captain as we've seen since Peca. And maybe better. (Since Schony? No, I'm not going there yet...yet.)
deluca67 Posted October 8, 2011 Report Posted October 8, 2011 Why shocking about Leo? He's a very good D-man. Considering the other players on the D. With Myers and the 2 big ticket acquisitions it is a bit of a shock to see a guy thought to be the #4-5 guy get so many minutes. He played well and maybe that is why Lindy kept tapping his shoulder. Considering the quality of forwards they faced, first game of season or not, the D as a unit played pretty well.

Considering the quality of forwards they faced, first game of season or not, the D as a unit played pretty well. First game of a back-to-back with a decent lead. He was probably resting those three big-ticket Dmen for tomorrow. Leo is solid enough and experienced enough to not be too big of a risk out there (as opposed to, say, Sekera or Grags.) I also suspect that we'll see Weber tomorrow night, since he'll have the fresh legs. Maybe, he swaps in for Leo.
LGR4GM Posted October 8, 2011 Report Posted October 8, 2011 I listened to the game but was curious to know what people thought of MAG. It sounded like he played reasonably well and it could be that he just needed the preseason to refocus. Any word on Mike Weber's injury? (he is injured right?) Leino and Ennis I think will be dangerous and I am happy to see Leino pick up points right off the bat. Ehrhoff continues his point streak... im counting preseason, the guy makes it happen Our defense... if awesome, so excited to see a game, sadly won't be til next weekend. Vanek, Adam, Pomminstein... awesome
wonderbread Posted October 8, 2011 Report Posted October 8, 2011 Wow. They certianly came ready to play. Didn't get to see any of the game but the last 5:00 minutes. Had to GR stream it. RJ sounded a bit off probably due to them in Buffalo broadcasting a TV feed. One thing i noticed is Harry didn't make many mistakes. Can't wait until tomorrow. I miss PA.

Considering the quality of forwards they faced, first game of season or not, the D as a unit played pretty well. I never saw Leo as a 4-5 guy and still don't. He's a very good defenseman; if Leo is on a second pairing, that means the D is strong. Peca is a tough comparison considering the difference in play between the two. Difference in styles? Or difference in, well, what? They aren't directly comparable; if that's the point, you're absolutely right. But, as I think you are smart enough to know, that's not what I was talking about.
Punch Posted October 8, 2011 Report Posted October 8, 2011 Good to see Vanek starting off with a pair. I agree, a start like this bodes well for the season... a great many Sabres' fans have waited for Vanek to show he has a pair.
Robviously Posted October 8, 2011 Report Posted October 8, 2011 Pommer is going to be as good a captain as we've seen since Peca. And maybe better. (Since Schony? No, I'm not going there yet...yet.) Drury and Briere were both at least as good as Peca. I do expect Pominville to do a good job though. And I like that Ruff picked a group of forwards who all came up together and put it on them to lead the team to the Cup. A few years ago, they would have just given it to Regehr.
nfreeman Posted October 8, 2011 Report Posted October 8, 2011 Observations: 1. Sabres are excited. 2. Myers - Regehr works. 3. Pommer being captain has energized Pommer and Vanek. 4. Miller is ready, and excited by a better, chippier defense. 5. Adam is making 3 good lines possible. Real balance is hard to defend. Woo-hoo! Good post. Not sure which line is our third line, but it will be better than the other team's third line most nights. Maybe more importantly, it will be a load for the other side's third pair on D. First two periods we spent a lot of time in the Ducks' zone. Forecheck was working awesome. Another one. Pommer is going to be as good a captain as we've seen since Peca. And maybe better. (Since Schony? No, I'm not going there yet...yet.) Whoa there. Down boy. He did play very well tonight though. I highly doubt Lindy swaps out any defensemen following that win, especially not the guy who led the team in ice time. As far as that goes, I thought all of the D looked pretty solid tonight. Ehrhoff's puckhandling was a little off to start but he settled down and was good. Drury and Briere were both at least as good as Peca. I do expect Pominville to do a good job though. And I like that Ruff picked a group of forwards who all came up together and put it on them to lead the team to the Cup. A few years ago, they would have just given it to Regehr. Good post here too. My 2 cents: 1. Excellent start to the season. Miller was outstanding other than totally whiffing on a cheapo goal by Anaheim. 2. Regehr brought what we wanted him to bring. He and Myers also looked pretty good together. 3. Very balanced offense. 9 forwards played between 13 minutes and 17:15 (with Ennis, surprisingly enough, leading all forwards in ice time). The additions of Adam and Leino and the return of Roy have really souped up the offense relative to last year. 4. In the 3rd period when the Sabres were killing a 5-on-3, Gaustad won a defensive zone faceoff cleanly and played the puck to Regehr, who cleared it immediately. Perfect. 5. The D was pretty balanced too. I thought all of the pairings were pretty good. Sekera seemed a bit harder on the puck and sounder defensively, and Gragnani looked pretty comfortable and passed it beautifully as always. I'll be interested to learn whether Gragnani beat out Weber for the start, or whether Weber's alleged injury was the cause. 6. If you're thinking about whether to get DirecTV, here's something to consider: I DVR'd the game and watched it after dinner (not knowing the outcome). I had set my DVR to record MSG; however, my MSG feed was blacked out (not sure why). My DirecTV DVR automatically recorded the game on the Anaheim feed (in HD). That is a very strong showing from an inanimate object. 7. I wonder if we'll get Enroth tomorrow? FWIW, he's from Stockholm, which is about 700 miles from Berlin. Go Sabres. Good first step.
X. Benedict Posted October 8, 2011 Report Posted October 8, 2011 Considering the other players on the D. Considering the quality of forwards they faced, first game of season or not, the D as a unit played pretty well. I thought the D shifts wwre pretty balanced. I not sure if he had more shifts but I think he got caught out on the ice a few times, (which were really his fault)
Bullwinkle Posted October 8, 2011 Report Posted October 8, 2011 My observations: Excellent game, I understood why they went into a defensive shell in the 3rd. With 4-1, no need to take chances, just wait for the opportunities. Anaheim never really got untracked - prepare for a much tougher game against LA Saturday. Adam looked the best I've ever seen him. Promising. But what to do when Hecht comes back? Roy was quiet but Pominville's play seemingly picked up - could it be his new captaincy? The D looked good and Miller was sharp. Obviously they are a much better team than last year. But a Stanley Cup this year as someone posted? No, not yet.
TheMatrix31 Posted October 8, 2011 Report Posted October 8, 2011 Most important part of Pominville being the captain is the bounce in his step that comes from it. Team's showing confidence in him, and we obviously need him to pick it up. Either way, it's one game. The first game, lol.
X. Benedict Posted October 8, 2011 Report Posted October 8, 2011 I thought the D shifts wwre pretty balanced. I not sure if he had more shifts but I think he got caught out on the ice a few times, (which were really his fault) Were not. Whoops.
eball Posted October 8, 2011 Report Posted October 8, 2011 But a Stanley Cup this year as someone posted? No, not yet. Can you give me a hint what the PowerBall numbers will be tonight? ;) Great game! That's the way to start a season and feed the fans' excitement.
Sabres Fan in NS Posted October 8, 2011 Report Posted October 8, 2011 A great start ... I know its not Thursday, but I can't wait until then ... My complaint is with the NHL (No Hockey Logic ... I realize that Logic is not a strong word, but it's all I could come up with). I have posted it before, but the NHL is a garage league at best. Tim Hortons runs a league for kids (around 5 or 6 year olds) called Tim Bits (Sidney Crosby was a Tim Bit here in Halifax a few years back). Anyway, Tim Hortons runs a better league than the NHL. First of all ... The official opening day roster (per NHL.com) shows Vanek and Weber as injured ... pretty good game from Vanek, since he is injured). While, Hecht (who may have played his last game in the NHL) is not on the injury report. Here is a link to the official game roster (per NHL.com) for yesterday's game ... http://www.nhl.com/s...12/RO020007.HTM It shows the Sabres had six (6) centers in the lineup yesterday ... including Gerbe and Ennis, but not Leino. House League at best. ---- On a positive note ... The Bosnian national Football team is on their way to qualifing for Euro 2012. Huge match against France on Tuesday. The winner will automatically qualify and the looser will be, most likely, in a playoff to qualify. I hope the Bosnians win on Tuesday ... the country could really use a boost. I'm confident that if the Bosnians are in a qualifing playoff FIFA (the most corrupt organization in the world .. IMO) will find a way to screw them over, just like in the last World Cup qualifing. We are off to Bosnia next Wednesday for a few months ... unlikely to see this board while there ... limited access to the Internet. Try to hold the fort until my return. ----- Go BiH!! Go Sabres!! Thanks for reading the postings of a raving lunatic ...
Bullwinkle Posted October 9, 2011 Report Posted October 9, 2011 Can you give me a hint what the PowerBall numbers will be tonight? ;) I could, but then I'd have to split the jackpot with you!
