Sabres cut down further

That's exactly what is going to happen. Once they're back, they'll go back to a roster of 22, maybe even 21 (only carrying the 7th defenseman). They'll want to bank as much cap space as possible for any moves later in the year. Carrying a full 23 would get in the way of that.

EXCELLENT point. The fact that they're truly spending to the cap and wheeling and dealing really adds a new little quirk this season. Me likey.

I thought Adam looked good for the most part, but I agree that he's better playing games in Rochester than sitting around here. There were also some really well-developed D men.

DR will more than likely be looking for a way to trade a player or two as the season marches on; to clear up cap space and maybe give someone like Adam a permanent slot. It seems the Sabres have a little flexibility with their depth right now - I still dream of moving Hecht sooner rather than later.

They can't have Adam, Ellis and MacIntyre on the roster all at the same time. They would be over the cap. They could however send them down to Rochester but still bring them along for the trip just in case. DR said they were bringing MacIntyre to Europe already.

My understanding is that MacIntyre will be coming to Europe as a member of the Rochester Americans or perhaps he is the roster exemption for the third goalie. I bet Adam will also be joining the Europe trip as a member of the Rochester Americans if MacIntyre comes for sure since it's very easy to send Adam down as he is not waiver eligible.

I'm kinda wondering whether Persson will clear waivers. He's a former 1st-rounder who reportedly played pretty well in the AHL last year. It strikes me that a team with crappy defensive prospects in its system might want to pick him up, especially since it won't cost them anything.

I'd be very surprised if someone picks him up to play on an NHL roster with no NHL regular season experience.

Take the Habs for instance....they just picked up Chris Campoli. There are still other options.

I think Paul Mara is still available, I'm not sure if anyone picked Nick Boyton up.

So he can only be claimed on waivers if the claiming team keeps him at the NHL level? Or can they claim him and then send him down to the AHL? I guess if they did that, he'd have to clear waivers and the Sabres could just re-claim him? If that's the case then I agree with you.

Ellis is a leader and should deserve a spot on the roster but I don't think he will get one. Adam looks pretty good and could develop some chemistry with some young sabres players and create a strong line in the future. Ellis will lead the Amerks to the calder cup wearing the "C"

You're right with the latter part there. He needs to clear waivers in order to be sent down. In order for a team to claim and send a guy down, they have to be the only team to claim the player. If multiple teams claimed him, those other claimers would have a chance to keep him on their NHL roster first. Finally, if no one wants to keep him at the NHL level, the original team (Buffalo) gets the first right to retain him and assign him to the minors.

If that actually happened, they could in theory let him go to the new team, but that probably wouldn't make much sense.

That's it. They would have to waive him again. Which would be a little cruel to the player.

BTW....I think Tim Kennedy is still in the mix for the Panthers. At least I haven't seen him waived yet.

I wonder if the guys assigned to Rochester will be part of the night practice/scrimmage tomorrow? To me, the best part of an event like this is to see the young players(Kassian, Foligno, Brennan, Scheistel, etc...)

BTW...If Adam makes the big club, who the heck is playing center in Rochester other than Ellis????

Szczechura (my goal by the end of the season is to memorize that spelling) is the only one who comes to mind immediately. The AHL website has Voakes and Turnbull all listed as centers last year. Then again, we all know little that listing could actually mean. So yeah, looks pretty thin. It's probably been a long time since Mike Ryan has seen significant time at center.

Don't know if they officially signed him but Phil Varone is a center as well.

Only reason anyone mentioned that he played well last year was because of how poorly he had played up till last year. While I have been wrong before(see MAG), I would be shocked if Persson ever played anything of significance in the NHL.

I feel the same way. Unless he has an AMAZING year in the AHL in 11-12, I don't expect the Sabres to offer him a new deal, especially considering all the blueline prospects they have in the pipeline.

Although I watched quite a few Pirates games last year early in the season, I never watched enough to notice Persson's late year surge...or whatever justified his playoff call-up...(though he never played).
