... Posted September 24, 2011 Report Posted September 24, 2011 I thought I heard that on WGR today..?
Bullwinkle Posted September 24, 2011 Report Posted September 24, 2011 I thought I heard that on WGR today..? You are correct. Both have been waived via WGR site via McKenzie. Geez...was Ales THAT bad in practice?
DumbPuck Posted September 24, 2011 Report Posted September 24, 2011 You are correct. Both have been waived via WGR site via McKenzie. Geez...was Ales THAT bad in practice? Could it be that he wasn't "THAT bad"? Perhaps just not good enough, relatively?
sabres1970 Posted September 24, 2011 Report Posted September 24, 2011 Whatever, neither of them were going to play a game in Buffalo this year. Might as well give the young guys in Rochester more ice time. Now it's safe to say that Kotalik definitely was a salary dump for Calgary.
inkman Posted September 24, 2011 Report Posted September 24, 2011 You are correct. Both have been waived via WGR site via McKenzie. Geez...was Ales THAT bad in practice? Or his future was determined the second they traded for him. It looks like all the talk from Darcy about Ales getting a shot to make the team was the usual GM banter, as many here suspected. I thought it was handled decently.
Andrew Amerk Posted September 24, 2011 Report Posted September 24, 2011 Hopefully AlKo will be a good sport about it, and decide to be a good role model for youngsters on the Amerks.
BetweenThePipes00 Posted September 24, 2011 Report Posted September 24, 2011 Actually, sending them down now could be so that they have a better chance of making it through ... At least in morrissonn's case. If they wait, more chance someone gets hit by injuries on defense and claims him. Not that he is a huge part of their plans, but at least they could get a pick for him if someone needs a body.

It was handled pretty much how i expected, but not gonna lie I'm a little shocked they didn't even get him into a pre-season game. Jeez.

Won't they have to clear waivers if they are called up? Then the team would get them at a discount? Or, am I thinking about the wrong scenario?

Or, am I thinking about the wrong scenario? You are correct, someone could claim him if the Sabres called him up. But if he is just sitting there and someone wants him maybe they give up a middle-to-junk pick for him rather than wait for that callup scenario.
Sabres Fan in NS Posted September 24, 2011 Report Posted September 24, 2011 Won't they have to clear waivers if they are called up? Then the team would get them at a discount? Or, am I thinking about the wrong scenario? My understanding (very basic understanding, at best) is players sent down do need to clear "re-entry" waivers ... unless they are called-up on an emergency injury replacement basis. Bottom line ... it is extremely unlikely these two will be playing in Buffalo this year. They will play in Rochester, or another NHL city.
North Buffalo Posted September 24, 2011 Report Posted September 24, 2011 Morrison has more upside if there is an injury in my opinion. If Ales was a center maybe it would be different, but his role can be filled by too many of the up and coming guys. Morrison, if healthy still holds some value, probably not with the Sabres, as the young D have shown even in preseason that the Sabres have a lot of talent behind the top seven guys. I wish both well.
... Posted September 24, 2011 Author Report Posted September 24, 2011 I kind of feel bad for Kotalik - he seemed jazzed to be back.
nfreeman Posted September 24, 2011 Report Posted September 24, 2011 I would guess that they tried to trade both of them, found no takers, and figured that waiving them now would result in a greater chance of someone claiming one or both of them (and more likely Morrisson than Kotalik) than would be the case at the end of camp. And that, I would guess, brings the offseason personnel moves to an end.
Two or less Posted September 24, 2011 Report Posted September 24, 2011 Morrison has more upside if there is an injury in my opinion. I wish both well. Agreed that Morrisson has more upside, but i don't think it's a true statement to say if there is an injury. Because Mike Weber and MA Gragnani are fighting for the 6th spot on this defense, and one of them will be in the press box watching and waiting for an injury to happen before he gets into the game.

Shouldn't the word upside be replaced with the word value here. Upside to me means potential. Maybe it's just me.
TheChimp Posted September 24, 2011 Report Posted September 24, 2011 I kind of feel bad for Kotalik - he seemed jazzed to be back. Same here.
Jeanbe Posted September 25, 2011 Report Posted September 25, 2011 ice looks good. Not many bouncy pucks.
matter2003 Posted September 25, 2011 Report Posted September 25, 2011 Explanation was that if either got hurt during a game in the preseason they would have had to keep them on the opening day roster. Since they had to clear cap room someone else would have had to be sent down or waived....not a real smart risk to take as a GM when they weren't part of the plans obviously...
tom webster Posted September 25, 2011 Report Posted September 25, 2011 There were several players placed on waivers today throughout the league. Day must have some sort of league significance.
SabresFan526 Posted September 25, 2011 Report Posted September 25, 2011 I suspect Morrisonn will get picked up by a team that is looking to hit the cap floor as he is not an AHL level guy. He may not get picked up, but I think he has a decent shot since he's a decent player. Kotalik will not get picked up at all, so we'll see if he goes to Rochester or transfers to Europe. Wouldn't be surprised either way with Kotalik.
matter2003 Posted September 25, 2011 Report Posted September 25, 2011 Well Wade Redden isn't an AHL guy either but there he plays due to his contract...
SabresFan526 Posted September 25, 2011 Report Posted September 25, 2011 Well Wade Redden isn't an AHL guy either but there he plays due to his contract... There are two differences between Morrisonn and Wade Redden. First, the Salary Cap Floor is extremely high this year, so some teams may just take a flyer on Morrisonn just to hit the cap floor. Second, Morrisonn makes significantly less money than Redden does, so he is fairly affordable for some cash strapped teams that will be forced to hit the Cap Floor. Redden should not be in the AHL either, and I suspect that if he gets waived again and nobody picks him up, he's going to Europe.
RazielSabre Posted September 26, 2011 Report Posted September 26, 2011 Let's hope they find a new lease of life somewhere new, this really doesn't surprise me at all to be honest.
