Sweet! Vegas currently giving the Sabres 6-1 to win the cup!

They were somewhere around 16-1 when I was in Vegas in late June. The last night I was there, I went to put $20 on them to win the Cup, but the stupid sportsbook closed at 11. I had a real early flight the next morning and never made the bet. I have a friend going down next week(he will be placing my bet) and it sounds like I won't be making as much money WHEN the Sabres win the Cup.

While I agree we should wait until we actually win the cup to build the 500 foot statue of Terry Pegula straddling the peace bridge deck on the Buffalo side, that will be a lot of bronze, we should probably start ordering it now.

I have to agree with the earlier opinion that Derek Roy is underpaid. I believe his contract is up after this season...wonder what it will take to re-sign him long-term? Going by his point total, he's certainly in the "higher" class of centers, which means minimum 5-6 mil a year. Should we not be re-signing him now as well?

According to TSN, Myers will get a $10 million signing bonus on July 1st, 2012. His yearly salaries will be $2 million, $6 million, $5 million, $5 million, $4 million, $3.5 million, and $3 million. The cap hit of $5.5 million won't take effect until the 2012-2013 season.

FWIW, that's 39.9 million over 10 years. Just a bit of lockout/rollback protection for Tyler.

the other day, my wife and i had a budget discussion. we went over every bill, superflous expenditure, and receipts. we decided what areas could be whittled down. we nixed our netflix and blockbuster dvd mail service, kept netflix streaming. dropped our cell plan to 700 shared minutes and combined our texting bundle. we tried cancelling vonage, but they talked us in to maintaining the account at $10 a month for the life of the account.

then we started talking about the satellite package through directv. she was of the opinion that it was a pricey package, and we don't watch it very much ... maybe we should just get rid of it altogether and watch our favorite shows online. my immediate reaction, was "honey, there is no way i'm giving up DTV right now. in fact, i would like to add the center ice package in october. it's a one-time payment of $170. with all the cuts we're making, we'll break even in october and start tacking on the savings in november."

of course, her reaction was, "it's a waste, you can check the scores online, blah blah blah." then she got right down to it. "why do you feel it's so important to get the hockey package?"

"because they're going to win the cup this year, and i want to watch the entire run to the championship." no lie--i got a little misty-eyed when i said it.

feel it, my friends. cautious optimism, maybe, but embrace it because this team is going deep. we would have met boston in the ECF with a couple of tweaks to the game plan; this is the year. well, okay ... 2012 is the year, but this is the season.

buckle your seatbelts and return your tray to its original upright position. takeoff is imminent, and you're about to take the ride of your life.

$38.5MM over 7 years?

Wow, great job once again Darcy.

Like Eleven implied above, as time goes on it's becoming more and more apparent how much he was being shackled by prior ownership/management.

It's his job to figure out who to hand out big multi-year contracts to and who to pass on. IMO and this is not in hindsight, he overpaid by a lot for Hecht and Gaustad and these guys should both be taking pay cuts on their new contract if they plan on staying. I can't blame him for Pominville's deal as he was improving every season at the time the new contract was offered.

Only time will tell on Ehrhoff, Leino, Myers and Stafford. People are saying look at Darcy now that the handcuffs are off. I choose to wait and see some performance on the ice.

great points. it's a relief that hecht and goose are coming off the payroll next year -- they either re-up for workable numbers, or darcy will be off looking for other pieces.

as the puck daddy blog put it, the sabres are fast approaching ken holland territory with managing salaries and personnel. (that's not to say that they have the same quality of players (yet) -- just that that's where their #s are headed.)

that post was a lot of fun - thanks.

i will say that there are a hundred things -- some big, some small -- that need to go right in order to win the cup. but we are clearly the beneficiaries of an owner who is wholly committed to putting our team in a position to contend year in and year out. that's all you can ask for.

$38.5MM over 7 years?

that's what mckenzie said on his twitter.

https://twitter.com/#!/TSNBobMcKenzie

So Myers gets $12M in Year 1, followed by years of $6M, $5M, $5M, $4M, $3.5M, $3M.

cap hit of $5.5 per year.

mckenzie then tweeted that he thinks the next CBA could do away with cap manipulation and require that there be even distribution of a total contract over its life (my guess, there will be a maximum % deviation clause that tries to cut back on the tactics that pegula has allowed darcy to use).

You Brits confuse me.

I'm afraid to see what would happen if we fed him blood pudding and haggis all at once. Would he confuse us any further?

Hey tell her to get used to that aspect of your cost savings. Because if it doesn't happen this season, it will happen the next one AND the one after that.

EFF yah man. we've had the CI package for 4 years now. this will be the 5th. she knows that hockey season is sacred, so she didn't put up too much of a fight.

even after the 05-06 run, starting the 06-07 campaign, i wasn't this excited about the season. october 7 cannot possibly get here fast enough. my only complaint (being that it's thursday) is that there's a 6-day gap from the 8th to the 14th. after getting that much to drink from the fountain of the hockey gods, 6 days is going to seem like an eternity.

but drink i will. yea verily, for thus sayeth the pegula, "thou shalt sup and be nourished, for ours is the kingdom of stanley."

en nome del pegula, del miller, e del espirito vanek, amen.

I think the barometer of whether a contract is good or not is whether it is movable.

Paul Gaustad at 2.3 is a fair deal and less than the league mean. If he's overpaid, it isn't by much, $300,000? He's very moveable at current prices.

Hecht is a different story.

At 3.5 M he's not very likely a moveable part until the middle of the season when most of that salary is paid down.

Either way Hecht and Gaustad are important to the kill....together 200 short handed face- offs won. The rest of the team, less than 70.

Good post. BTW, I'd say the "movable" barometer would support Pommer being well overpaid as well.

Before talking about the extension of Tyler #1 Ted laid out a few big changes that have been made.

- New 90ft banner in the main foyer, visible from Washington street

- Flat panels and cup holders in every bathroom

- Two new Zamboni's are outfitted with laser leveling systems.

- total of 3 new dehumidifier units, 2 are currently operational

- New suite in the 200 lvl that will have a corridor down to a roped area near where the players will enter the ice

- Multiple party's in the plaza throughout the regular season

Kinda wished they pinned the C on him while tyler was there but i can wait

You could find a Gaustad replacement for a 1-1.25 mil. He was overpaid when the contract was signed, is still overpaid at this point in his contract, and unless he is planning on taking a pay cut when contract negotiations begin, hopefully he will be sent packing after the season ends.

I'm looking at getting the online CI this year, to stream to my PC or PS3. If you're already streaming Netflix, sounds like you have a device and internet connection to handle it. It won't help with local games (I'm not sure whose TV area UT is) and probably not VS or NHL network games though...

So do we close Complaint Thursday early?
