Eleven Posted September 6, 2011 Report Posted September 6, 2011 The link is on the front page courtesy of some kind person, but I think it's worthy of some discussion: http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=375187 It notes the strong D that will help out Miller, and puts Regier on the "hot seat," which I find interesting. Regier made six big moves in the post-Pegula era; four additions (I include Boyes), one FU (Connolly) and one extension that a lot of us wonder about. There were also other moves that I wouldn't call "big." It also says that Gerbe is the "breakout player to watch," and I couldn't disagree more. I think we know what we're going to get from Hefty Smurf. The breakout player to watch is Tyler2. I also found it interesting that the article seems to find one roster spot to be taken either by Kassian or Adam. Adam, of course, is at the position of need--but is he the player that the Sabres need? On the other hand, Kassian is at a stocked position and needs to develop some maturity. And just who is TSN sending to Roch, sitting on the bench, or cutting, anyway, to create this spot?

I think Gerbe has a better all around game than Ennis and if they had to trade one of them, I would want to keep Gerbe. ...and I've said it before and I'm sure I'll say it again, I FN HATE the word "diminutive"!

I agree with the article more. I actually expect Ennis to have a borderline bad year. I can't back that with reasoning, it's just my gut. I think Gerbe is going to show us a lot this year.
LGR4GM Posted September 6, 2011 Report Posted September 6, 2011 I actually agree with the writer. I think Gerbe has a better all around game than Ennis and if they had to trade one of them, I would want to keep Gerbe. I wouldnt trade either because they are completely different players. Gerbes a leader and Ennis has more skillz than everyone else on the roster minus Vanek. Both will be impressive this year, my gut makes me think that pominboysford will have a problem... one of them at least.
Weave Posted September 6, 2011 Report Posted September 6, 2011 I think the author is correct about Gerbe but not because of any of the reasons mentioned. I think he'll "break out" this year simply because he'll be on the 3rd line with more talented players and get more sniffs on the PP. If he doesn't show a big improvement statistically there is a problem. OTOH, Ennis' point increases will be a little more incremental because he was already a top 6 player last season. And the only way Kassian ar Adam get in more than 10-15 games is if we run into real injury issues. My money is on Adam not seeing any of that time at center. My opinion is he is no longer a center prospect.
thesportsbuff Posted September 6, 2011 Report Posted September 6, 2011 I am not real big on college hockey -- i LOVE to watch it, but with so little TV coverage and no major programs around here, it's always been hard to really follow in depth. However, Nathan Gerbe was my exception. He was the first player I followed through his collegiate career and there is just a part of me that really, really wants to see him succeed. It's premature at this point, but I've always thought Gerbe had "captain material" written all over him. Of course, you don't need a "C" to be a leader and I think Myers will eventually get the nod.. but you never know. Anyway, I HOPE Gerbe has a "breakout" year and scores 25, but I think Ennis is far more likely to. Either way we're in good shape  I hope they're never forced to trade or never unable to sign either one of them.
RazielSabre Posted September 6, 2011 Report Posted September 6, 2011 I really don't expect a breakout year from Ennis or Gerbe, maybe a steady increase but not a 'breakout' year so to speak. Myers, Miller, Boyes, Vanek may have the best chance to massively improve their game. I know Myers, Miller and Vanek in particular already play at a high level but Miller did have an off year last season and another Veniza isn't out of his reach, Vanek always has something to prove, we (quite rightly) expect a lot and Myers has a better D to work with, and is in his 3rd year.

Interesting read with some points about Leino being able to play center and how the sabres biggest question might be can ehrhoff put up 50pts not playing on pp unit with the sedins... 11days til the first preseason game... 11 days

It's there. "Also having a breakout year: the diminutive Nathan Gerbe, with 16 goals in 64 games."
LastPommerFan Posted September 6, 2011 Report Posted September 6, 2011 I think Gerbe is going to have a breakout year, but not necessarily on the stat line. He has the ability to be a spark. He rallied last year right when the team needed it at the end. And in some of the bad periods in the Philly losses, he looked like he was the only player on the Sabres that bothered to tighten his skates before the game. He might not get to 25 goals, but he'll make plays and get momentum when we need it.

buffalohsix Posted September 6, 2011 Report Posted September 6, 2011 I'd agree, I want a show out of Gerbe
RazielSabre Posted September 6, 2011 Report Posted September 6, 2011 One of the greatest movies ever.
inkman Posted September 6, 2011 Report Posted September 6, 2011 ...and the Gerbe man..er... Little boy love continues. Buffalo fans sure do like their circus freaks (see Mike Jasper).
Weave Posted September 6, 2011 Report Posted September 6, 2011 ...and the Gerbe man..er... Little boy love continues. Buffalo fans sure do like their circus freaks (see Mike Jasper). I've changed my tune on him. I think he'll be an effective NHL player. I'd still rather see an effective NHL player with a bigger body manning our 3rd line though. Right now, he's the best 3rd line LW option in our system and I think he'll be effective there. Good enough for now.
FogBat Posted September 6, 2011 Report Posted September 6, 2011 I like this quote from the article: "If the team prospers from the new acquisitions, the city could become a destination of choice instead of a launching pad." I can't remember how many of you have been saying something similar to that in the past, but the prior seasons had me wondering if we were being the league's farm club.
SwampD Posted September 6, 2011 Report Posted September 6, 2011 ...and the Gerbe man..er... Little boy love continues. Buffalo fans sure do like their circus freaks (see Mike Jasper). Freaks are fun, but I like guys that hit people and then steal the puck from them more.
nfreeman Posted September 6, 2011 Report Posted September 6, 2011 ...and the Gerbe man..er... Little boy love continues. Buffalo fans sure do like their circus freaks (see Mike Jasper). For me it's much more the intensity he plays with as opposed to the "look at the funny little guy" factor. He plays every shift like he's got something to prove (probably because he's been hearing for his whole life that he's not big enough to make the cut). And I loved it when he tackled Scott Gomez last season. I also think he'll probably score 20+ goals this year, which is pretty good for a third-line winger.

I didn't think much of Gerbe before the beginning of last season. By the end of last season he proved to me that he's worthy of higher expectations. He has leadership potential above all, IMHO.
drnkirishone Posted September 6, 2011 Report Posted September 6, 2011 I'm not on the Gerbe love train yet. I want to see a full season or at least 60-75 games of how he closed out last year first. I will say he has moved from the bust to the give em shot category for me thou. I expect Myers to have a breakout year this year and considering the level he plays at already I think that means he is gonna get some darkhorse talk about the norris and take his game from good to elite. He has all the skills to do it, has the veterans around him to learn from, and the talent to help him dominate now.
LGR4GM Posted September 7, 2011 Report Posted September 7, 2011 Nope. It's there. "Also having a breakout year: the diminutive Nathan Gerbe, with 16 goals in 64 games." nooooo!!!!! I hope Gerbe proves everyone wrong but i worry if he can be as good as he was for the last 15 games, for an entire 82 game season. As for Myers and the Norris trophy... if he comes back and is in beast mode where no one touches Miller and he can literally lock down his own end to the point opposing forwards avoid him, then maybe just maybe he could have a shot. Also if that happens ppl can shutup about trading for Weber because we will already have a guy who is like him if not better.
