Apologizing For Hits

Necessary? No.

As a player, it's important to me to convey both no bad intent and some sorrow (at least for the situation, not always for any specific action) if an opponent goes down hard. That's because I play for fun, injuries are no fun, it's important to be sportsmanlike, and it's important to set a sportsmanlike example on and off the ice.

So, I suppose OP's question from my perspective is: "Is it unsportsmanlike to not apologize for hits?" My answer is no, it's not unsportsmanlike. You're not a dick if you don't apologize, but you demonstrate that you're trying to not be a dick if you do apologize.

If the hit is clean, there is no apology to be given - no one wants to see someone else get hurt (except Chara - he's a psychopath) - you express sympathy for the fact they were injured. It's part of the code.

If it's an illegal hit, maybe you apologize - depends on whether it was intentional or not. If unintentionally illegal, you apologize. If intentional, what are you going to say - I'm sorry I did exactly what I intended?

Horton's a whiny little bitch. But hey, it's not like he flew to Vancouver for game 7 with this "serious concussion"... oh wait. I wonder if that separated shoulder from the Tampa series has healed up yet.

From the article, it just seemed like Horton is being a brat. If Rome apologized, he should just accept it, whether it is through a text, phone call, email, or formal letter shouldnt matter IMO.

I think it is definately the right thing to do, to apologize when you injure someone, but I dont think it is necessary. Its a violent sport, and the players know this prior to getting on the ice.

And Pronger, and Mike Richards, and Chris Neil, and Jarko Ruttuu, and....

Fact is, too many players these days have abolutely no problem ending other people's careers.

Wouldn't be surprised if some of them even took pride in it.

I guess I'm looking at this thing from a completely different perspective, because, in my opinion, if you hit somebody and they get hurt on the play, and you don't inherently feel bad that they're hurt, you're a douchebag. No malice intended, not speaking angrily here, just stating facts. It's just who you are. And if you spend even a second trying to figure out how it wasn't your fault that they got hurt, you're an even bigger douchebag. And you can tell by the way they talk about it how they really feel, I mean, if you're good at reading between the lines, that is.

Take Zdeno Chara as an example. HUGE douchebag.

Well said. This sums it up perfectly.

Sometimes perfectly clean hits, hits that you are taught to make since you were 11, result in injuries. You are not a douchebag if you try to figure out how it wasn't your fault that they got hurt.

I just don't get all the Chara hate. This is the second time he has been mentioned in this thread. It has to be jealousy because he is everything that we want Myers to become. And if Pacioretty can for give him

"I think he regrets what he did and I forgive him because he definitely made an effort to contact me and go out of his way to tell me how he felt," said Pacioretty. "I respect him for that."

I think I can.

That's mighty Christian of patches to forgive him but I know what I saw. Chara tried to decapitate him. Patches is lucky to still be walking, much less playing hockey.

I want myers to be a bad ass defenseman, but I don't want him to be psychotic. I like guys who play hard but within the rules. Even some of Peca's hits used to make me cringe because he was so close to the edge.

I agree completely.

I'm OK with a couple players on our team playing just over the edge. As far as I am concerned, I'd like to see this team have more of a "do unto others before they do it unto you" sort of attitude. But I thoroughly expect them to be labeled as douchebags in the process. Really, if it results in wins and space on the ice, I'm OK with it.
