inkman Posted August 22, 2011 Report Posted August 22, 2011 To me, either it was important to you, or it wasn't. If you go in with the idea that "if they win great, I'll be happy for a few days, and if they lose, well, I don't really care, i'm over it already," then I submit it really wasn't that important to you. It was too important. I had to emotionally divest myself from the moment. Otherwise I would have lost it. I change the channel immediately and never looked back. I didn't even know about the controversy until the following week. I think this mentality started during the Bills Superbowl runs. I was so enraged by the perfomances of the second & third loss by the forth, I was emotionally spent. I never want to feel like that again.
Andrew Amerk Posted August 22, 2011 Report Posted August 22, 2011 '99 still affects me like the early '90s did for any *slightly older than me* Bills fans, or anyone who watched the music city *miracle*. I still feel it... Agreed. The SB losses, were lost by the Bills themselves. The SC outcome was interfered with by the refs. It is a little different. Still bothers me.
Weave Posted August 22, 2011 Report Posted August 22, 2011 Again, i am not saying I am shedding tears or even still holding a grudge against Dallas like some do ... but if you guys can honestly say that the result of the 1999 Finals means nothing more to you than the result of the 1998 or 2000 finals, then maybe I am indeed insane. I am just wired differently I guess. To me, either it was important to you, or it wasn't. If you go in with the idea that "if they win great, I'll be happy for a few days, and if they lose, well, I don't really care, i'm over it already," then I submit it really wasn't that important to you. That's how I feel watching baseball or college hoops. And while I don't know you guys (ink and weave) at all other than on this board, just the fact that you are here tells me it matters more than that to you. I'm certainly not telling you how to feel, I could definitely be the weird one. But it seems like you care more than that. It was important in '99. Very important. Important enough to lose sleep over. Not so much now. 12 years of roller coasters has made May '99 seem like very good times. I think of '99 like I think of my prom night, it was a whale of a time, I ended up disappointed and broke in the end, didn't get the prize I expected. But the last decade's hindsight and wisdom tells me I should cherish that moment because even if it was disappointing, it was still a helluva experience. And the results sure don't seem important at all after all the water passing under the bridge. Pespective. ;)
LGR4GM Posted August 22, 2011 Report Posted August 22, 2011 as I was much less of a fan in 99 due to my age and general interest in sports, my moment that haunts me as a fan is game 7 against carolina in 2006 btw the 2nd and 3rd period where we were winning and just had to hold on... haunts me. That team was special.

I think mainly because management did very little comming out of the lockout and we weren't obviously expected to have the year we did. The light bulb seemed to go on for a lot of guys that season.

Perhaps my original thing about being "over" 1999 was a poor choice of words. I am "over" it in the sense that the fact that they lost doesn't ruin the memory for me ... it was an awesome two months, just like I would not trade the 4 Super Bowl losses for missing the playoffs just to avoid the hurt at the end. My point was the memory still matters, it's not forgotten, it wasn't just another game or series. And you both confirmed this also, so we are mostly on the same page.

It's amazing how much influence recent years have on these feelings though. I get the feeling that we might not say the same thing about those super bowls if the team wasn't in the middle of a decade+ of pure crap. But you're absolutely right. 2nd place is a million times better than 29th.
BetweenThePipes00 Posted August 22, 2011 Report Posted August 22, 2011 !!!NOIWANTTOARGUE!!! HA no one loves to argue more than I do, but ... But you're absolutely right. 2nd place is a million times better than 29th. I don't know, I think I'd always feel that way ... I was in college at the time, no REAL worries or responsibilities, my football team playing in the last game of the season EVERY YEAR ... I would trade it for one championship, but not for not making the Super Bowl just because the pain would be less. (And if anyone could be bitter about those years, it's me ... my school also lost the Division II national title game twice in those four years, the second one with 7 seconds left in a game that looked destined for OT ... SIX football title games lost in four seasons ... but still a fun four years.)

Obviously we all know how that played out. This was a couple months after BU went into the NCAA tourney as the top team in the country, on an 18-1-2 streak. They slaughter UNH in the HE tourney 9-2 (our fans counted down every single second of the last 10 minutes of the game, it was that much of a laugher). Then they take the HE title from BC in OT, and slaughter UNO in the first round of the NCAA tourney 9-2. What went unnoticed in that game though is that one of our top line players took a nasty slash to the arm and broke his wrist. We come into the next game of the tourney against BC, a team we had beaten 4 times in a row, unheard of in their little rivalry. Early in the game some little runt by the name of Gerbe slashes our captains hand, breaking it. BC winds up blasting us 5-0. Those two losses paired up together made for a really long offseason.

shrader Posted August 22, 2011 Report Posted August 22, 2011 He was playing center at the time, wasn't he? Yeah, but this was before he had both ankles severed in a horrible circus accident. Luckily they were able to re-attach his feet to his knees.
Andrew Amerk Posted August 23, 2011 Report Posted August 23, 2011 Someone should have asked Big Daddy Ted today if Gerbe is really a center or not...

Oh my god I love it! :clapping: The more I lurk (I don't post due to my lack of constructive input (I don't have any constructive input due to my lack of hockey knowledge)), the larger majority of my posts are about Gerbe's position at center. Hahaha, I love it.
wjag Posted August 23, 2011 Report Posted August 23, 2011 Someone should have asked Big Daddy Ted today if Gerbe is really a center or not... Or if they believe Leino is a center... and why....
