inkman Posted August 9, 2011 Report Posted August 9, 2011 Taro's thread about phones and subsequent evolution into ring tone discussion got me wondering... Am I the only old curmudgeon in this forum who doesn't use ring tones anymore? I guess to each their own but I just find them distractingly annoying. If used properly, I see no harm no foul but almost everyone I know abuses them in one of these fashions: 1) Any ring tone in an office setting is unacceptable. I don't need to here Katy Perry, Kanye West or Carrie Underwood from my co-workers desk while I'm trying to accomplish actual work. Vibrate works just fine for a work setting. 2) Obnoxious volume levels that I can not some how achieve on my phone. If I'm more than five feet from you and can hear all the words to "You shook me all night long", you are doing something wrong. 3) Inappropriate lyrics on your ring tone. Unless you only use your ring tone in the privacy of your own home, leave the filth off your phone. 4) By far my least favorite abuse is "leaving ring tone on while I'm in meeting guy/gal". If you're this stupid, you shouldn't be employed. 5) Text alert ring tones. If you have 30 seconds of a song playing for a text that is no more than 4 words, you are an idiot. I have an iPhone. It's been on vibrate for over 3 years. With the increasing use of texting over calling, I'm hoping this problem fixes itself, unless #5 guy is invloved.
wjag Posted August 9, 2011 Report Posted August 9, 2011 I've never use them. I keep my phone on vibrate most of the time.
Cereal Posted August 9, 2011 Report Posted August 9, 2011 Looks like this is the 20,000th SabreSpace thread... well except for however many y'all lost in that legendary crash I heard about. Oh yeah, and agreed on all points. Especially #4.
Andrew Amerk Posted August 9, 2011 Report Posted August 9, 2011 I've never use them. I keep my phone on vibrate most of the time. I always keep my iPhone on vibrate, and have for a couple years. I have only used the ringtone setting a couple times that I was expecting an extremely important call.
Eleven Posted August 9, 2011 Report Posted August 9, 2011 Everything ink described is freaking irritating. Some sort of ring-sounding ring tone should be enough to alert to calls, and some sort of (very) short noise for texts should be fine. Which brings me to this. Anyone else irritated by the WNY women pronouncing "texts" as "textses," or is it just me? It's a nearly instant turnoff.
billsrcursed Posted August 9, 2011 Report Posted August 9, 2011 Agreed on all points. And yes, we're all turning into "that old guy on the porch"...
inkman Posted August 9, 2011 Author Report Posted August 9, 2011 Which brings me to this. Anyone else irritated by the WNY women pronouncing "texts" as "textses," or is it just me? It's a nearly instant turnoff. Kinda sounds like Texas with a "t" in the middle?

My phone is always on vibrate. Some days I even want to turn that off.

biodork Posted August 9, 2011 Report Posted August 9, 2011 Ink's post is dead-on. I do use ringtones (mainly to help me decide whether to bother answering or let it go to voicemail), but my text alert is a very basic chime and I keep the volume so low at work that I often don't notice I missed a call, even with my phone sitting right next to me on the desk. The woman who works on the other side of the aisle, however, has this awful ringtone that is some obnoxious mixture of a whinnying horse and a police whistle that always goes off at senior citizen decibel levels multiple times during the day. Thank goodness she's only part-time.
wjag Posted August 9, 2011 Report Posted August 9, 2011 4) By far my least favorite abuse is "leaving ring tone on while I'm in meeting guy/gal". If you're this stupid, you shouldn't be employed. It always plays out the same way too. Phone goes off, loud and annoying, interrupting meeting. Person goes into spasmodic motion trying to find and shutoff phone. Person is embarassed and may/may not apologize. Person repeats behavior in next meeting. My pet peeve with cell phone use is when a person's voice GOES UP when they talk on the phone. If I'm in an airport and my phone vibrates, I guarantee you that no one but the caller hears what I say. I will never understand how people can blather aloud on a cell phone annoying everyone around them. I really do not need to hear about your aunt's surgery. They better NEVER EVER allow phone use (for talking) during a flight.

Its not that far away as i have skyped while on a plan with wifi and am sure someone will be anoying with it soon if not already... I was on an almost empty flight with no one within 5 rows of me so dont judge

(Although, it would be fun to tell someone who wants to use their phone that the cell phone area is just through that little door in the back...)

shrader Posted August 9, 2011 Report Posted August 9, 2011 I used to use ring tones but it got old pretty fast. It is kind of funny to have a specific ring tone for the annoying people on your list, but otherwise I don't see much point. I think I moved past them after I had "Them Bones" from Alice in Chains as a ringer for a little while. It started with the scream/yell from the beginning of the song and I quickly found out that it would scare the crap out of me if I was sleeping when it went off. Now all I want is the ringtone from 24 and I'll be happy.
TM8-PL16 Posted August 9, 2011 Report Posted August 9, 2011 Totally 100% agree on all points! wow, like another poster said... like I wrote it (only better). :clapping: You should be able to punch the people that don't follow these simple rules... just my opinon
That Aud Smell Posted August 9, 2011 Report Posted August 9, 2011 you are the preacher, we are the choir, ink. when i got my first smart phone, i got all geeked with the idea that i could pull .mp3's in as ringtones. that was novel and fun for a little while, but i never, never had those ring tones enabled in a work setting. it was more like, if i were going out with friends, i might enable a ring tone that people would find amusing (or annoying, if i was looking to bust chops). but that novelty wore off pretty quickly. my phone is on vibrate just about all the time now (save for when there's a sitter at home with the kids), and, like biodork, i have a very low-volumed chime for my texts.
Claude_Verret Posted August 9, 2011 Report Posted August 9, 2011 I agree with all of this. My phone is always on vibrate. There are two guys in my office (yes, grown men surprisingly) that violate rule #1 to the nth degree. Both have Geico commercial ring tones, one is the therapist who yells at the guy about chugging over to mamby pamby land for more self confidence, you jackwagon. The other guy has the little pig who yells "WEEEEEE, WEE, WEEE!!!!". I kid you not. HIGHLY annoying.
inkman Posted August 9, 2011 Author Report Posted August 9, 2011 The other guy has the little pig who yells "WEEEEEE, WEE, WEEE!!!!". I kid you not. HIGHLY annoying. I'd probably have thrown his phone into the parking lot by now.
Claude_Verret Posted August 9, 2011 Report Posted August 9, 2011 I'd probably have thrown his phone into the parking lot by now. I would have if he didn't have a few inches and about 100 pounds on me. And I'm 6'2" 230. The Geico jackwagon ringtone is going off as I type this by the way. Just brutal.

TheMatrix31 Posted August 10, 2011 Report Posted August 10, 2011 My phone is on silent at home and vibrate when I'm out.
Andrew Amerk Posted August 10, 2011 Report Posted August 10, 2011 When the ringtone starts wait for the "you jackwagon" and chime in with your own "you jackwagon". Full Metal Jacket is still amazing tho.
inkman Posted August 10, 2011 Author Report Posted August 10, 2011 Full Metal Jacket is still amazing tho. Yeah, I might make an exception for breaking about half of my rules with a private Pyle "I AM in a world of ######" ring tone. :-)
