The Final Cut

through the fish eyed lens of tear stained eyes

i can barely define the shape of this moment in time

and far from flying high in clear blue skies

i'm spiralling down to the hole in the ground where i hide

if you negotiate the minefield in the drive

and beat the dogs and cheat the cold electronic eyes

and if you make it past the shotgun(s) in the hall

dial the combination. open the priesthole

and if i'm in i'll tell you what's behind the wall

there's a kid who had a big hallucination

making love to girls in magazines

he wonders if you're sleeping with your new found faith

could anybody love him

or is it just a crazy dream

and if i show you my dark side

will you still hold me tonight

and if i open my heart to you

and show you my weak side

what would you do

would you sell your story to rolling stone

would you take the children away

and leave me alone

and smile in reassurance

as you whisper down the phone

would you send me packing

or would you take me home

thought i oughta bare my naked feelings

thought i oughta tear the curtain down

i held the blade in trembling hands

prepared to make it but just then the phone rang

i never had the nerve to make the final cut

Not Now John

###### all that we've got to get on with these

got to compete with the wily japanese

there's too many home fires burning

and not enough trees

so ###### all that

we've go to get on with these

can't stop lose job mind gone silicon

(stop bomb) what bomb get away pay day make hay

break down need fix big six

clickity click hold on oh no brrrrrrrrring bingo!

make em laugh make em cry make em dance in the aisles

make em pay make em stay make em feel ok

not nah john

we've got to get on with the film show

hollywood waits at the end of the rainbow

who cares what it's about

as long as the kids go

(so) not now john

(we've) got to get on with the show

hang on john

we've got to get on with this

i don't know what it is

but it fits on here like ...........

come at the end of the shift

we'll go and get pissed

but not now john

i've got to get on with this

hold on john

i think there's something good on

i used to read books but

it could be the news

or some other abuse

or it could be reusable shows

###### all that we've got to get on with these

got to compete with the wily japanese

no need to worry about the vietnamese

got to bring the russian bear to his knees

well, maybe not the russian bear

maybe the swedes

now let's go and show these

make us feel tough

and wouldn't maggie be pleased

nah nah nah nah nah nah!

s'cusi dove il bar

se para colio pou eine toe bar

s'il vous plait ou est le bar

oi' where's the ###### bar john!

Two Suns in the Sunset

in my rear view mirror the sun is going down

sinking behind bridges in the road

and i think of all the good things

that we have left undone

and i suffer premonitions

confirm suspicions

of the holocaust to come

the (rusty) wire that holds the cork

that keeps the anger in

gives way

and suddenly it's day again

the sun is in the east

even though the day is done

two suns in the sunset

hmmmmmmmmm

could be the human race is run

like the moment when the brakes lock

and you slide towards the big truck

you stretch the frozen moments with your fear

and you'll never hear their voices

and you'll never see their faces

you have no recourse to the law anymore

and as the windshield melts

(and) my tears evaporate

leaving only charcoal to defend

finally i understand

the feelings of the few

ashes and diamonds

foe and friend

we were all equal in the end

Truth be told, the last 3 tracks on side 1 are pretty copacetic too.

I still have the vinyl. I ended many a night in high school with that record, my friends all passed out on the living room floor and my parents away for the weekend. I'd be hard pressed, though, to choose between The Final Cut or Animals if I could only take one to a desert island.

I know what I'm doing tonight.

Animals for me. My favorite song after Time:

Weird video. It may have been the same concert but that wasn't the song they were playing.

Anyway, this is neat.

I agree, either the sync is off or they spliced in segments in which they aren't playing the song. However there are definitely parts when Waters is singing Sheep and Gilmour is on the right chord.

Love that building. When we make our pilgrimage to Scotland in a few years, I need to stop in London to catch an EPL game and see the power station.

Waters is a god.

True.

I'm not sure what that makes Syd and this tribute to him, but it is up there as well.

Remember when you were young, you shone like the sun. Shine on you crazy diamond.

Now there's a look in your eyes, like black holes in the sky. Shine on you crazy diamond.

You were caught in the cross fire of childhood and stardom, blown on the steel breeze.

Come on you target for far away laughter, come on you stranger, you legend, you martyr, and shine!

You reached for the secret too soon, you cried for the moon. Shine on you crazy diamond.

Threatened by shadows at night, and exposed in the light. Shine on you crazy diamond.

Well you wore out your welcome with random precision, rode on the steel breeze.

Come on you raver, you seer of visions, come on you painter, you piper, you prisoner, and shine!

Nobody knows where you are, how near or how far. Shine on you crazy diamond.

Pile on many more layers, and I'll be joining you there. Shine on you crazy diamond.

And we'll bask in the shadow of yesterday's triumphs, and sail on the steel breeze.

Come on you boy child, you winner and loser, come on you miner for truth and delusion and shine!

Great lyrics and it pretty well sums up Syd and his spiral into madness. There's a great vid of Syd on youtube called Syds first trip that is probably a good indication that the lsd became more important than the creative process instead of just enhancing it. I'm currently teaching myself wish you were here on guitar. Love that song too.

Wish you were here is one of my favorite songs of all time! It was also the first song I learned on guitar. There are several good video lessons on youtube if you get stuck!

The final cut is a great album to pass out to after a long night of recreation.

Seems like we are missing an OT thread - there might be one or two more vices we haven't discussed yet.

We got my 12 yr old a guitar for his birthday this year and I keep asking him if he thinks he can play that song (or any other one that comes on the radio w/ Gilmour working the Stratocaster) and he keeps coming back with 'I don't think so.' Now that he can lay out kids 40 lbs bigger than him on the ice and it's fun to watch that, I'm really looking forward to him learning how to work the guitar as well.

Actually if he could play anything off Gilmour's 1st solo album I'd be horribly impressed. That was a truly awesomely understated record.

There's no way out of here, when you come in you're in for good.

There was no promise made, the part you played, the chance you took.

There are no boundaries set, the time oh yet you wasted still.

So it slips through your hands like grains of sand;

you watch it go; there's no time to be lost, you'll pay the cost

so get it right.

I read an article the other day that "definitively" stated that Jimmy Hendrix is/was the greatest guitarist of all time. While I'm willing to give him his due, I will always think of Gilmour as being light-years ahead of Hendrix. Hendrix was great technically and wow-y, but Gilmour's guitar work is just so emotive. His solos are ridiculously intense, and maybe that's a by-product of being in such a phenomenal band ... let me put it this way: I've been emotionally drained by some of his work. Hendrix never does that for me.

One of the few fond memories of my early high school years was Pink Floyd ...

Such talent ...

RIP Syd and Richard ... a heck of a bank in Rock N' Roll heaven.

My later high school years were much better after I discovered The Clash ... it then became "Rock and Roll Highschool" for me.
