Guest Sloth Posted July 25, 2011 Report Posted July 25, 2011 I've bought the past 3 NHL games released by EA Sports, and I have not been disappointed w/ any of them. I enjoyed almost every update made to an NHL game as each one was released, and I did not have the feeling of playing the same game as the year before. The NHL Franchise by EA Sports has been the only one to give me that sense of newness. Madden and NCAA Football have become rather repetitive and I only buy one every 3 years or so. I'm just curious to what others think.
BuffaloSoldier2010 Posted July 25, 2011 Report Posted July 25, 2011 NHL11 is my jam, and the dorm room just would not be the same without it. I started playing the NHL games when i got 07, never bought 08, got 09, 10, 11, and plan on buying 12 the week it comes out. I've always thought they never gave the players on the sabres enough credit ratings wise, but it's still tons of fun. About two months ago i put in 07 and i couldn't believe how different it was, the game always seemed slightly different from the year before, but accrued over 4 (going on 5) years, it's night and day. I will say this, stick breaking and losing of the edge drove me nuts in 11. My stick should not snap every 2 out of 3 attempts at a one timer by default, and I'm sure you've noticed how frequently Ennis and Gerbe lose their edges when turning. If the new breaking glass feature has the same problem as the stick feature this year, i will be very upset. A stick is a stick, it's insanely inconvenient, but if i have to deal with a stoppage in play every time Myers or Erhoff take a shot from the point that goes wide or high, causing the glass to explode, I'm gonna go bananas.

BuffaloSoldier2010 Posted July 25, 2011 Report Posted July 25, 2011 Sounds like Jason Pominville was their technical consultant on the sticks. That would be understating the issue. Always made me smile though when literally every single slap shot my buddy took (he always played as san jose) would result in a disintegrated stick, and a breakaway for me :clapping:
RazielSabre Posted July 25, 2011 Report Posted July 25, 2011 This will be the first one I purchase in a while (not played it properly since 2003). Any tips/advise with the new modes et al?
thesportsbuff Posted July 25, 2011 Report Posted July 25, 2011 I love the NHL series and I don't think I've missed a year since I got my first Playstation in like '98 or '99. It's really the only game that truly finds a way to get better each and every year. Madden often seems almost identical minus a few minor features and some added animations, but NHL has been taking giant leaps forward since they re-programmed their game engine in NHL 08 (I believe). They took it from a 'arcade style' hockey game and made into a simulation-style hockey game -- meaning everything is more realistic: game speed, player speed, talents, hitting, etc. So those of you who haven't played it in 4-5 years are in for a pleasant surprise! The big additions this year are the new collision engine which is supposed to adjust the hitting so that little guys can't take down huge guys with big hits all the time, and will rather bounce off them and only slightly knock them off balance. I think it also allows for multiple collisions at once-- say if a player gets hit and falls down into the path of a skating team mate, the team mate will trip over him or run into him and both will fall down again. Basically just more realistic collisions between players. This includes GOALIES for once, so yes, you can run the goalie and knock him out of position (of course, you can get penalized for it), so the defense will have to do a better job clearing the front of net. Goalie fights are also re-instated this year, though it looks like the rest of the fighting is identical to the last couple years. The other huge addition is the re-working of the Sim Engine, allowing you to simulate games (in say a season mode) with a more in depth look at what's going on. Every action is supposed to be recorded and displayed while you're simulating, and you can jump in at ANY time (not just between periods as in previous years). This is going to be a huge improvement for those hardcore players who play Be a GM mode religiously like I do. They're also fixing some other Be a GM mode problems, such as improved AI trading, more accurate injuries, rookie growth & salaries, and a new feature in retired jerseys. There's also some exciting improvements to Be a Pro mode, but I usually only use "My Pro" for the online EASHL -- in the past, Be a Pro mode has been nearly unplayable. But this season will allow you to fast-forward from shift to shift and greatly expedite the process of playing a game/season as your pro. Maybe I'll give it a shot this year. Here's the list of changes: http://www.ea.com/nhl/blog/revamped-be-a-pro-mode I can't wait for this game to come out!
Corp000085 Posted July 25, 2011 Report Posted July 25, 2011 NHL 98 was the sh--! I used to rule the day in dorm olympics tournaments featuring my Czech Republic team.
DR HOLLIDAY Posted July 25, 2011 Report Posted July 25, 2011 I get the game every year, it has made great advances, but there are always a lot of game play issues that piss me off.........

I feel sorry for those of you who never had the experience of making Gretzky's head bleed. :D Anyway, I might give it a shot this year since it's been a few years since I bought one. I always wind up giving up on the sports games pretty quickly though. Strangely enough, I tend to lose interest when I'm about 5 games away from winning the cup.
dEnnis the Menace Posted July 25, 2011 Report Posted July 25, 2011 I too started with '07 and have gotten every year since then as an early Christmas present from my grandmother (she buys it for all three of us grandsons). I love all of the new features they add every year, and I think the game has really evolved. I remember when I had my N64 back in middle school playing Wayne Gretzky Hockey. That was fun. setting the nets on fire, goalies turning literally into brick walls, the fights, it was all a blast lol.

I noticed this as well but it was weird to me because I never really noticed it happening until maybe 2-3 months ago(referring to losing an edge, possibly from an update???). The stick breaking thing I have happen every few games but haven't had it happen as often as you say you have(I'm guesing 2/3 of the time is you over exaggerating the fact it's annoying). One thing that I was never really happy with was the board play. I know that it added a new element to the game and it is a nice one but some things about it really drive me crazy. -When your pinned, you cant get out. You will either lose it to one of their players or have to pass it out. -If one of your players is pinned, you can only call for the puck, you can't poke check for it -When you pin one of their guys, your teammates stand at the blue line and leave you hanging I'm sure everyone has experienced different things but that's how it was for me. Not trying to take anything away from the game, I think it's great, but I agree with the glass breaking aspect. If I'm breaking the glass after wild slapshots and hard hits every period the game will be taking a step back in my opinion. And I think this is the longest post I've every written.

When you're pinned, you can move the joystick and budge yourself free, depending on the size of the player pinning you. You CAN poke check and dig for the puck when your team mate is pinned against the board (it's R1). But yes, it's annoying when you have somebody pinned and nobody comes to help out.. because when you switch to a different player, the player you were before releases the pin... DUMB!
MUNCH Posted July 25, 2011 Report Posted July 25, 2011 I love NHL11, and will definitely buy 12...BUT I wish they would let you import your HUT, because ive probably sunk close to 300 bucks into it since it came out. I know they wont cause i will just buy more for 12, but come on... :wallbash: And :death: to myself for even getting suckered into spending that kind of dough on a video game...although my team is pretty sweet
OverPowerYou Posted July 27, 2011 Report Posted July 27, 2011 I buy the NHL game every year and I like alot of things about it. Just a few thoughts on some new things I would like to see from future games. -They need to have each teams organ music/more songs for the arena. I know, this is probably hard to do. -Goal horns need to be better. Certain teams like Buffalo's and Chocago's weren't right at all. -Goal songs would be nice -Spice up the on ice intros so that it's the not the sane thing every time. Also, everytime you win the cup it's the same exact sequence, it gets boring after a while. -I'd like to see a nice little video intro every time I start the game up. Those are cool. -A winter classic would be nice. -Id like to see improved fighting. It's been the same for a while. -National anthems would rock in these games. Imagine havng doug Allen sing everytime you play. -The benches. There's never 14 guys on the bench. And the coach never looks like Lindy Ruff. -Make the players faces look more realistic and identifiable -Change up the AHL arenas/goal horns. They're all exactly the same. -Importing/creating teams in nhl11 sucked. I hope it's alot better.

It shouldn't be TOO hard to get the specific organ music and more team-specific crowd chants. Tradition doesn't change that often... they wouldn't really have to update them every year. For some reason they never get fighting right. I want it to be better, but it's still the best we've ever seen in a hockey video game! I imagine goalie fights might be pretty cheesy and unrealistic though haha. Just a couple things that should make you happy: The winter classic will be in NHL 12... it will only be playable in Pittsburgh though. You can use any two teams, but the only outdoor scene will be Pittsburgh. They're also having team-specific intro scenes (as in San Jose skating through the Shark to enter the ice), but idk if everyone is going to have one or only teams that do extreme stuff like that. And also, it won't solve the problem of being repetitive after you've seen them all once haha. Definitely agree with the cup winning sequence... ugh that's so annoying how cheesy it is after all these years of technological advancement. I also want new announcers. It'd be sweet if they got 4 or 5 different sets of announcers and randomly chose a set for each game.
nrod424 Posted July 27, 2011 Report Posted July 27, 2011 Lets get a EASHL Xbox team going. I've always been a fairly good at the onine Be-a-Pro so I'd love to play with some guys from the board.
drnkirishone Posted July 29, 2011 Report Posted July 29, 2011 My advise for someone coming back to the nhl games is play lots of offline games to get as many boosts and such unlocked as possible and get comfortable with the controls. Once you feel you got a hang of things go to the best part of the game... online play. The best thing I can tell you when switching to the online stuff is treat it like your a rookie and pass the puck quick and often, dont hang on to the puck and play defense by avoiding going for big hits. Cause anything more then that when first going to online games is gonna get you laid out/puck taken/scored on alot. Online play turned the nhl games into something i played now and then waiting for a sabres game to come on. To a game i like to play whenever i got some free time. oo and ya i getting the game soon as it comes out
oldmagnethands Posted July 29, 2011 Report Posted July 29, 2011 I've owned every NHL game since it began in 1991. I started with sega genesis then sega saturn then ps 1 2 and 3. Its amazing what has become of the series. I remember when you could first complete trades and create players in 95. Now its as close to reality as it playing the game on ice or watching it.
VansTheMans Posted July 29, 2011 Report Posted July 29, 2011 Online play isn't all its cracked up to be. The default speed at which the NHL games play is much, much too slow. And unfortunately, that's the speed which online play is used. Typically I change the settings to my own taste. I usually increase gameplay speed, increase hitting power and turn down the breaking of sticks and penalties to a minimum. I find that makes the game much faster and more fluid. I'll be buying the game though, really looking forward to it. My buddy and I play Be A GM mode religiously. We have several teams where we play well into the 2016-2017 seasons. Good times.

I agree, but that'd be a logistical nightmare, and theres gotta be some kind of copyright protecting something like that. 2.) I thought Buffalo's was pretty accurate this year, could use some tweakage but its pretty damn close. 3.) You can do goal songs by tweaking the custom music options 4.) Agreed. 5.) The video comes up after you sit on the start menu for about 20 seconds. I think it's best there because if you wanna watch it you can, if you don't then it doesn't have to load and you can jump right in. 6.) Like sportsbuff said, it'll be in this one. 7.) They revamped fighting in 10, so altogether i'm pretty happy with it. If they could add a tug feature or maybe a way to pull a jersey over the head that might be nice, but it hasn't gotten stale for me yet. 8.) They have em during international play (ie US vs Canada) But i know what you mean, and i agree here as well. 9.) Seems like an easy enough fix 10.) I think this comes down to sheer numbers. Roy, Vanek and Miller look pretty decent, and they seem to try to cover most of the well known players. It just seems like a very difficult task to get every player on the league every year, especially considering how frequently the game engine changes. 11.) I haven't played enough at the ahl level to notice, but i like the fact that during the intro sequences, the ceilings on AHL and Junior Arenas are considerably lower than the NHL arenas. 12.) I agree 100%. I made a sabres all time team in 11, and i'd like to be able to import it rather than re-create it. I'd love to see it made less of a hassle.
wjag Posted July 30, 2011 Report Posted July 30, 2011 We never ever buy these games new. We'll buy 12 next year. Drops the price from 60 to 6. I don't play them, but my son does. He goes in spurts between the basketball, football and hockey. Usually burns some birthday cash at Gamestop. The one time I played him in football he so completely crushed me that he started to deliberately lose to keep me interested in playing. Patting me on the back and giving me encouragement. Complete role reversal. Kind of funny to watch. Didn't work. Find them boring. To each his own.
drnkirishone Posted August 26, 2011 Report Posted August 26, 2011 Demo is out. I like the hitting in it so far. Seems a bit more realistic. Poke check seems kinda weak so far. Played 2 games as a goalie and it seemed nice, thou I'm sure once other people starting running you it will suck. Also the new sim engine used in be a pro seems pretty slick to me.
Guest Sloth Posted August 27, 2011 Report Posted August 27, 2011 I'm counting down the days to it's release. The NHL series seems to be the only one to be providing quality new additions. Aside from updated rosters, Madden and NCAA have virtually done nothing to give people a reason to buy the new games. Honestly, I don't know if EA can be blamed for the lack of improvement for their football games. There's very little they can do to improve the football games. As for the NHL games, they continue to give people reason to buy. I haven't bought a Madden or NCAA game in 3 years. I may buy Madden this year, but I'm leaning to stay w/ Madden 10.
Guest Sloth Posted August 27, 2011 Report Posted August 27, 2011 Also, I've been buying the NHL games since 08'. And I plan to continue doing that. Man, I love hockey.
