Ever watch The Office? His title is the Assistant to the General Manager, not the Assistant General Manager. He runs the fax machine and makes coffee.

Thank god we got that out of the way...

If he is negotiating deals (which I am fine with if he keeps doing deals like the Enroth one ... I can't imagine they could have paid him a cent less) they need to move him up the Hockey Department list on the Front Office page of the website ... because right now he is listed below the "Graduate Assistant-Hockey Analytics" ...

Sure, his title is "Assistant to the General Manager," but sticking him way down where he is makes it look like he is Darcy's equivalent of the lackey Derek Roy had to pick up his laundry and wash his car in that between periods video from a few years back. (which, by the way, still bugs me and makes me like Roy less ... maybe he has matured, but I can't un-see that thing.)

You are talking about the Roy and Peters roommate video right??? Why did a satirical video bug you?

No, the stuff with peters was funny. They did a behind-the-scenes thing with Roy and he had one of his buddies whom he paid to be his "assistant." For real. Again, he was probably 22 at the time and I am sure he's not the only guy in the league doing that kind of thing, so maybe it shouldn't matter ...

If he really did handle the negotiations with Enroth (assuming it wasn't just because he speaks Swedish or something like that), then they should drop the "to the" from his title and move him up the list.

Story on GR quotes Darcy as saying MJ handled negotiation which he described as "long."

That's what I was referring to. What I meant was if he really did most of the negotiating (with goals/limits provided by DR, I'm sure) rather than just passing info back and forth between Darcy and Jhonas' agent (which DR may still say "he handled the negotiations" about to make MJ feel good), then he's acting as an Assistant GM, not an Assistant to the GM, which would be Darcy's Administrative Assistant. An AttGM wouldn't given any real decision power, while an AGM would. Sounds like he's the latter.

This has stuck with me too!

Do you know if that's unusual for a player in the NHL? I don't, but I'm curious if anyone else does. Maybe they all do; maybe not. Besides, nowhere in the video (unless there's a different one) does it say what the PA does for him.

Now, if you want to question his Sean Avery-esque fashion comments ...

Here is the video I was referencing ...

Admittedly, watching it again, I seem to have inflated the role of his "personal assistant" ... the guy is just playing guitar hero in this clip. But then that kind of makes my original point that a guy negotiating deals should be more prominent on the team's website.

You're pissed about a 22 year old professional hockey player hiring his buddy to keep an eye on his place and run errands for him so the hockey player can practice, work out, sleep and take care of his body? Would you rather Derek be picking up his dry cleaning when he should be taking his pregame nap? Would you rather no one was there to keep an eye on Derek's stuff when he is on an 18 day west coast road trip? I want these guys catered to and taken care of so they can pay attention to their game and their bodies.

He was 22 and in a strange city - think maybe he was a little lonely? Think having his buddy around made life a little easier for him?

I understand your concern over the perception that Roy has a towel boy, but I think the reasoning might be a little different than the perception.

Well that's exactly it ... it's his whole personality that rubbed me the wrong way ... for all we know he paid one of his buddies to be his "personal assistant" for 6 months until he found a real job or something, just being a nice guy ... who knows? I actually covered the Pittsburgh Pirates a few years back and that video is probably very typical of an unmarried pro athlete in his 20s. It shouldn't matter that he's probably not the kind of guy I would hang out with ... there might be guys I like more on the team whom I would like WAY less if I saw behind the scenes ... but again, I can't un-see that thing. For some reason he bugs me. I know it's unfair.

Never said I was pissed ... I said I hope he has matured since then. And I acknowledge there is probably nothing there atypical for a pro athlete in his 20s, and it's just me being an older guy.

But let's not overstate things here ... they go on 18-day trips maybe once a year. And judging by his apartment (and reputation for social endeavors), Derek had more going on than "practice, work out, sleep and take care of his body." I don't think they all NEED personal assistants.

This is very true.. I was home in february to visit and a friend took me to some club near shea's, needless to say Roy walked in around 1 went up to the bar and they passed him two bottles. He then went and stood on like a raised dancing platform while girls lined up to tilt there head back and get some of his bottles poured down their throats. I thought it was hysterical but some of the sabres def like to party.

On a side note the same thing happened to me about 4 years back at some place on chippewa with Connolly. Except the crowd got sort of hostile (mostly my friends) and kept asking timmy how his head felt and why he was out so late. He got pretty upset and left with some young girl.
